Chapter 12 - Vanessa’s Confession

“Eleanor contacted me eight years ago,” Vanessa said.
Arthur kept his breathing shallow.
“That was before we married.”
“Six months before we met.”
The answer hurt more than he expected.
“So meeting me was arranged.”
“Yes.”
“Did you ever love me?”
Vanessa looked at him.
“At times.”
“That is not an answer.”
“It’s the only honest one I have.”
Arthur said nothing.
Vanessa continued.
“Eleanor sent me medical records from the Dorian trials. She told me you had buried the evidence and profited from what happened to Julian and me.”
“You believed her.”
“I wanted to.”
“Why?”
“Because hatred is easier when it has a face.”
Arthur looked toward the phone.
The recording indicator remained hidden.
“What did she ask you to do?”
“Marry you. Learn your routines. Find Evelyn’s ledger.”
“And if you couldn’t find it?”
“Wait.”
“For what?”
“For you to become vulnerable.”
“Then poison me.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears, but her voice remained steady.
“The first tablets were mild. They caused dizziness and weakness. Eleanor said the symptoms would support an incapacity claim.”
“And the stronger pills?”
“Julian changed the dosage.”
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“You continued.”
“Yes.”
Each admission sounded like a door closing.
Arthur forced himself not to look away.
“Why eighty-two million?”
“That was the value listed in the trust summary Eleanor gave me.”
“She promised it all to you?”
“She said once you were declared incapacitated, I would control the estate.”
“You never asked why she cared?”
“She said she wanted the ledger destroyed.”
“But the ledger would expose the people who harmed you.”
Vanessa’s expression twisted.
“I didn’t know what to believe anymore.”
“You believed money.”
“Yes.”
The word came without defense.
Arthur appreciated it more than any excuse.
“Did you order Holloway’s kidnapping?”
“No.”
“Did Julian?”
“He arranged it after Holloway panicked.”
“Who shot him?”
“I don’t know.”
“Who forged Samuel’s signature?”
“Eleanor’s people.”
“Who is Irene Vale?”
Vanessa looked toward the door.
“Eleanor’s daughter.”
“Where is she?”
“I don’t know.”
“Where is Eleanor?”
“No one knows.”
Arthur waited.
Vanessa reached into her coat.
The guards outside moved, visible through the glass.
She withdrew a small metal key.
“This opens a deposit box in Zurich.”
“What is inside?”
“A list of Continuity Group members.”
Arthur did not take it.
“Why are you giving it to me?”
“Because Eleanor sent me a message this morning.”
“What did it say?”
Vanessa placed the key on the blanket.
“She said Julian and I were contaminated assets.”
Arthur understood.
“She plans to kill you.”
“She plans to erase everyone.”
“Why come here?”
Vanessa’s voice fell.
“To ask you to protect Julian.”
“No.”
“He was a child when they experimented on him.”
“He was an adult when he aimed a gun at me.”
“He’s my brother.”
“And you were my wife.”
Vanessa flinched.
Arthur pressed the call button.
The door opened.
Samuel entered holding the blue folder.
Behind him stood Margaret and Detective Cruz.
Vanessa’s face changed.
Arthur sat upright.
His voice was no longer weak.
“Mr. Vance signed a new will,” Samuel said.
Vanessa stared at Arthur.
“You lied.”
“You poisoned me.”
Samuel opened the folder.
“Mrs. Vance receives no portion of the estate. Mr. Vance’s personal wealth will be transferred to a restitution fund for victims of Dorian Medical Systems.”
Vanessa lunged for the papers.
A security officer blocked her.
Arthur lifted his phone.
The red recording icon glowed.
“And your confession was recorded.”
Vanessa froze.
Footsteps approached outside the room.
Detective Cruz removed handcuffs from her belt.

Vanessa looked at Arthur with an expression that contained fury, grief, and something dangerously close to respect.
Then every light in the hospital went out.
