THE COMPASS / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - BY SUNRISE

Screens descended from the ballroom ceiling.

The first displayed the deed to the mansion.

The second displayed seventeen property transfers.

The third showed video recordings of Vanessa entering Arthur’s office, removing legal documents, and paying Doctor Ellis inside the private study.

The fourth contained audio files.

Vanessa’s own voice filled the ballroom.

Victor thinks he is buying my company. He has no idea Bell Strategic Ventures owns the lenders.

Guests turned toward her.

Malcolm moved toward a side exit.

Federal agents entered before he reached it.

The guards released Victor and restrained Malcolm.

Doctor Ellis attempted to tear up his report, but Adrian took it from him.

“Destroying evidence in front of three hundred witnesses is an ambitious legal strategy,” Adrian said.

Vanessa continued shouting.

“The recordings are fake. The company documents are forged.”

Adrian identified himself and confirmed Arthur’s signatures.

Judge Margaret Shaw entered with the original trust registration.

She announced that the merger had been suspended and all Hale Meridian assets frozen pending investigation.

Victor stood near the birthday cake while the empire he thought he controlled changed ownership around him.

Eleanor Ashford Holdings became active at nine twelve.

The mansion legally belonged to Eleanor’s company.

The protected assets returned to the trust.

The fraudulent debts were challenged.

Vanessa’s shell companies were exposed.

Yet Eleanor felt no victory.

She watched her son stare at the screens with the expression of a man seeing the ruins of his own choices.

Security began escorting the guests outside.

Some apologized to Eleanor.

She did not respond.

Vanessa fought against the guards.

“I built him,” she shouted. “Without me, Victor is nothing.”

Victor looked at her.

Months earlier, the words would have destroyed him.

Now he seemed almost relieved to hear them.

“You never believed in me,” he said.

“I believed you were useful.”

Malcolm laughed as agents handcuffed him.

“You still don’t understand, Vanessa.”

She turned.

Malcolm nodded toward Eleanor.

“The compass was never meant for you. Arthur knew you would expose yourself trying to obtain it.”

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“You told me it controlled the Ashford accounts.”

“It activated them. It also recorded every person who attempted to access them.”

A final screen appeared.

It displayed access attempts from seven locations.

Six belonged to the conspirators already in the ballroom.

The seventh originated from an address Eleanor did not recognize.

A private aviation facility in Portugal.

The same country where fragments of Arthur’s aircraft had been found.

Eleanor looked at Adrian.

He appeared equally surprised.

Before they could examine it, the screen went dark.

Every chandelier switched off one by one.

The ballroom emptied.

Victor clung to Eleanor as she prepared to leave.

“Mom, don’t leave. I was angry.”

Eleanor removed his hand gently.

“Anger does not explain eighteen months of choices.”

“I helped tonight.”

“You helped after discovering Vanessa planned to discard you.”

“I was trying to protect the company.”

“You were protecting the part of it you believed would belong to you.”

Victor looked toward the mansion.

“You can’t take my house.”

“It was never your house.”

“You’re my mother.”

“And because I am your mother, I will not allow you to escape what you have done.”

His face changed.

“What does that mean?”

“At sunrise, the board will receive evidence of every authorization you signed. You will resign as chief executive. Your accounts funded by Hale Meridian will be frozen. The cars, the apartment in London, the company aircraft, and the yacht will return to the trust.”

“You’ll leave me with nothing?”

“I’ll leave you with more than your father had when he began.”

“What?”

“A chance to earn something honestly.”

Eleanor closed the compass and walked away.

Outside, reporters gathered behind the gates.

Judge Shaw arranged a separate exit so Eleanor could leave without speaking publicly.

At the car, the compass needle pointed toward the western wing.

A light appeared in the highest window.

Eleanor saw the outline of a person standing behind the glass.

“Adrian,” she whispered.

He looked up.

The figure disappeared.

They returned inside with four agents.

The western wing was empty.

The elevator had not recorded any recent use.

Arthur’s hidden office remained locked.

Yet the telephone receiver rested on the desk instead of its cradle.

Eleanor lifted it.

A voice recording played automatically.

“Eleanor, sunrise changes ownership. It does not reveal loyalty.”

It was not distorted this time.

The speaker was a woman.

Eleanor recognized the voice, although she had not heard it in more than thirty years.

“Who is it?” Adrian asked.

May you like

Eleanor placed the receiver down.

“Someone who should be dead.”
