Chapter 7 - The Tunnel Ambush

Nicole dropped before the first muzzle flash.

Rounds struck the wall where her head had been. Ortiz fired twice toward the rear, then dragged a wounded agent behind a concrete support. The tunnel filled with the metallic roar of confined gunfire and the sharp smell of dust.

"Blue light," Nicole ordered.

Ortiz snapped a chemical light from her vest. Dim blue flooded the floor, revealing boots moving through smoke.

Nicole recognized the federal team leader by his gait. Special Agent Keller had briefed them at the entrance. Now he was firing toward his own people.

"Keller, cease fire!"

He pivoted toward her.

Nicole shot his weapon hand. The pistol spun away. Keller collapsed, screaming that he had no choice, that they had his daughter.

Two masked attackers retreated deeper into the tunnels. Nicole pursued with Ortiz while the remaining agents secured Keller and the wounded.

A steel door slammed ahead.

Nicole reached it seconds too late. Through a small glass panel, she saw an older man with a gray beard and a scar beside his eye.

Robert Turner.

He stood on the other side with one hand against the glass.

Nicole had imagined this moment for years without knowing she imagined it. In dreams, he was always the age he had been when he disappeared. The man before her had white at his temples, deep lines around his mouth, and eyes she recognized from the mirror.

"Open the door," she said.

Robert shook his head.

"They are sealing the lower level. You have ninety seconds. Go back."

"I am not leaving you."

"That is why they chose you."

An alarm began pulsing.

Ortiz examined the lock. "Magnetic seal. Control is on his side."

Nicole struck the glass with the heel of her palm. "You do not get to disappear again."

Robert's face broke for an instant.

"I am sorry."

"Not enough."

"I know."

He held a small notebook to the glass. On its cover was the broken-wing eagle.

"The names inside are only half the Ledger. The other half is inside Fort Resolute. Do not give this to Brooks."

"Why?"

"Because he is being watched by someone he loves."

A blast door began descending between them.

Nicole pushed her fingers beneath it, but Ortiz pulled her back before the steel crushed her hands. Robert disappeared from view.

The alarm changed pitch.

"Move," Ortiz said.

They ran.

The lower tunnel exploded as the team reached the chapel stairs. A wave of heat and pressure threw Nicole onto the stone floor. The burned clinic trembled. Windows shattered from the remaining walls.

Outside, medics treated three agents. Keller survived. Under guard, he admitted receiving photographs of his teenage daughter entering school. He had been ordered to ensure Nicole reached the seventh room and then kill Ortiz.

"Why Ortiz?" Nicole asked.

Keller looked at her through tears. "Because she found the succession file."

Ortiz's expression tightened.

She had not mentioned any succession file.

Nicole waited until they were alone near the vehicles.

"Explain."

Ortiz removed a sealed envelope from inside her vest. "I found it in the steel case beneath a false lining while you were at the hospital."

"You concealed evidence."

"From Brooks."

"And from me."

"Until I verified it."

The file contained names and dates connected to the role of Custodian. Each succession occurred after a death, disappearance, or promotion. The current entry was incomplete.

CUSTODIAN DESIGNATE: N.T.

Nicole stared at her initials.

Below them was a date three months in the future.

"What happens on that date?"

"Your promotion board," Ortiz said.

Nicole was expected to be considered for brigadier general in November. If selected, she would gain access to strategic logistics systems across several commands.

The Ledger was not trying to recruit her.

It was building a cage in which accepting promotion made her useful and refusing it made her suspicious.

Brooks called from the hospital. Evelyn was safe, but someone had entered Harper's guarded room disguised as a respiratory therapist. Harper had vanished again.

This time, he left willingly.

A note on his pillow read:

I KNOW WHO THE CUSTODIAN IS.

Beneath it, he had written a time and place.

Turner's Diner. 6:17 a.m.

The same time shown in the photograph of Robert and Evelyn.

Before leaving the clinic ruins, Nicole returned to the sealed blast door. The steel had buckled inward, but beneath the damage she found three shallow marks carved by hand. They formed the childhood code Robert once used when tapping on her bedroom door: safe, silent, soon. He had expected to survive the explosion. More troubling, the marks were on Nicole's side of the door, not his. Either Robert had crossed through another passage after the blast, or someone who knew their private code wanted her to believe he had. She photographed the marks and told no one, including Ortiz. For the first time, Nicole began keeping a secret of her own.
