Chapter 14 - Now Hear the Truth

The permit entered the court system at exactly noon.

Across the country, classified servers authenticated Elena Grace Ward as an active reserve colonel with sealed operational status.

The courtroom evidence system unlocked restricted files.

At the same moment, the hidden communications hub beneath the courthouse activated the Noon Protocol.

Heavy footsteps echoed outside Courtroom Seven.

The double doors began to open.

A Treasury official arrived carrying the sealed authorization case. Behind her came senior military officers, federal investigators, and representatives of the inspector general.

Elena stood.

“The secret has just been declassified.”

Margaret stared from the witness area.

Nolan monitored the protocol below.

The terminal began transmitting.

Account locations appeared across the screen.

Zurich.

Cayman Islands.

Singapore.

Panama.

Virginia.

Brussels.

Orders activated.

Destroy Archive Nine.

Transfer command authority.

Neutralize witnesses.

Initiate successor.

Rebecca’s teams intercepted each command.

Accounts froze.

Addresses appeared.

Names emerged.

Judge Sayer’s terminal received a hidden instruction.

Maintain courtroom seal.

Victor Hale’s phone received another.

Remove evidence case.

The system exposed them in real time.

Then every light in the courtroom went dark.

A gunshot shook the room.

People screamed.

Elena dropped behind the defense table.

Glass shattered beside the judge.

The medal case fell.

Someone moved through the darkness.

A man whispered near Elena’s ear.

“You should have stayed buried, Colonel.”

Mason.

Elena drove her elbow backward.

He avoided the strike and slashed at her with a blade.

She caught his wrist.

They struggled between the tables.

Emergency lights flickered red.

Mason wore a court officer’s uniform.

He had entered before sunrise.

Across the room, Victor Hale grabbed the medal case.

Daniel tackled him.

Judge Sayer attempted to leave through his private door, but Rebecca appeared and aimed a weapon at him.

“Stay where you are.”

The military officers secured the gallery.

Mason broke free from Elena and ran toward the judge’s bench.

He fired at the floor.

A hidden panel opened.

Elena followed him into the communications stairwell.

Below, Nolan stood beside the active terminal.

Mason aimed at him.

Elena fired first.

Her bullet struck Mason’s weapon.

It spun away.

Nolan charged him.

They crashed into the server rack.

Mason struck Nolan repeatedly, then drew a second blade.

Elena caught his arm.

Mason smiled through blood.

“Voss said you would choose your brother.”

“He was right.”

“That makes you predictable.”

“No.”

Elena twisted the blade away.

“It makes him careless.”

Nolan activated the emergency lock.

Steel doors sealed the hub.

Mason was trapped.

Above them, the Treasury official opened the black authorization case.

The courtroom screens came alive.

Elena’s service record appeared.

Officer training.

Promotions.

Command history.

Verified operations.

Award citations.

Photographs showed Elena leading evacuations, negotiating hostage releases, and commanding Silent Harbor after Voss abandoned the mission.

The jury watched in stunned silence.

A senior general entered the courtroom.

He removed the Night Meridian Cross from the evidence case.

“This decoration was awarded to Colonel Ward under presidential authority,” he said. “Its existence remained classified until twelve o’clock today.”

Victor Hale sat handcuffed beside the prosecution table.

Judge Sayer was detained.

Margaret began crying.

Beneath the courtroom, Mason looked at the screen showing Lantern’s accounts being frozen.

“You think you destroyed it,” he said.

Elena secured his wrists.

“We exposed it.”

“Lantern is not an organization.”

“Then what is it?”

“A method.”

Nolan wiped blood from his mouth.

“Where is Voss?”

Mason laughed.

“You still think he needed to be here.”

The terminal displayed a new message.

Successor transfer complete.

Elena turned toward the screen.

The receiving identity was hidden.

Nolan stared.

“I thought the transfer was blocked.”

“It was redirected,” Elena said.

“To whom?”

Before she could answer, the system erased the identity.

Mason’s laughter stopped.

For the first time, he looked confused.

“That was not supposed to happen.”

Elena studied him.

“Voss lost control.”

“No.”

Mason shook his head.

“No, he does not lose control.”

A second message appeared.

Lantern primary command terminated.

Replacement command recognized.

Then the server went dark.

The courtroom proceedings resumed an hour later.

Based on the newly authenticated records, Daniel requested immediate dismissal of all charges.

The judge assigned to replace Sayer granted it.

The jury was released.

Outside the courthouse, thousands waited.

Elena stepped onto the stairs wearing her restored insignia and decorations.

Veterans saluted.

Former Ward employees applauded.

Claire cried openly.

Thomas watched through a secure video connection from the hospital.

Margaret stood under guard.

Nolan remained beside Elena.

Reporters shouted questions.

Elena raised one hand.

The crowd became quiet.

“My service was questioned because secrecy was used as a weapon,” she said. “My family was divided because fear was mistaken for protection. Today, the truth became public. That does not repair everything. It only gives us the chance to begin.”

Nolan looked at her.

For the first time, he did not stand behind Margaret or in front of Elena.

He stood beside his sister.

It should have felt like victory.

Then Rebecca approached and whispered, “Mason is gone.”

Elena turned.

“What?”

“The transport vehicle was found beneath the east bridge. Two agents are dead. Mason disappeared.”

Nolan heard her.

“Voss?”

Rebecca shook her head.

“We received confirmation from a federal raid in Virginia. Adrian Voss was found dead inside his command residence.”

Elena felt no relief.

“When did he die?”

Rebecca handed her a photograph.

The clock beside Voss’s body had stopped at eleven fifty-one.

Nine minutes before the Noon Protocol activated.

Voss had not triggered the final transfer.

Someone else had.
