Chapter 6 - THE GUNSHOT AT THE RIVER

The bullet struck the driver high in the shoulder.

He jerked sideways, slamming his foot onto the accelerator. The sedan leaped forward and smashed through a chain barrier. One of the men outside drew a weapon. Victor fired again, shattering the man's windshield reflection before the man could aim.

"Out!" Victor shouted.

Noah scrambled across the back seat as the car rolled toward the river. Victor kicked open his door and dragged Noah onto the wet pavement. Behind them, the sedan mounted the embankment, struck a concrete post, and stopped inches from the water.

The second guard fired.

Victor shoved Noah behind a cargo container. A bullet tore through the sleeve of Victor's coat. He returned two shots, forcing the guard to retreat into the customs building.

"The east fence," Victor said. "There is a drainage tunnel beyond it."

"Come with me."

"I cannot."

"You said you were protecting her."

"I am. That is why Rusk must believe I still have you."

Victor removed his watch and pressed it into Noah's hand. The face displayed an ordinary second hand, but the rear panel opened to reveal a tiny digital map.

"Your mother's coffin has a transmitter hidden inside the lower rail. This tracks it."

A red point moved west across the screen.

Toward Saint Orison Chapel.

"They are bringing her back," Noah said.

"For now. Rusk changed the timetable when he realized the archive had been opened. He intends to use the public funeral as cover, then transfer her from the mausoleum after midnight."

"Why put her in the coffin during the service?"

"Because the Circle wants witnesses to her burial. The more public the death, the less likely anyone questions it."

Noah looked at the handgun in Victor's hand. "Why did you bring a gun to the funeral?"

Victor's face hardened. "Because once the coffin is sealed, Rusk will no longer need me."

Shouts came from the customs building.

Victor pushed Noah toward the fence. "Find Evelyn. Tell her the phrase is Orpheus returns alone. She will know what to do."

"What about Mom?"

"Keep the coffin above ground. Whatever happens, do not let them take it into the mausoleum."

Noah hesitated.

Victor seized the front of his hoodie. "Your mother believed she could outthink everyone. I believed I could protect her without telling her the truth. We were both wrong. Do not repeat our mistake. Trust no single person. Trust what they risk."

Then he shoved Noah toward the tunnel and stepped into the open with his hands raised.

Captain Rusk emerged from the building.

He wore no uniform now, only a dark raincoat. "Where is the boy?"

Victor dropped his gun.

"Gone."

Rusk struck him across the face.

Noah watched through the fence until Victor collapsed to one knee. Then he crawled into the drainage tunnel.

The tunnel emptied beneath an elevated rail line half a mile away. Noah climbed out into traffic noise and called Evelyn from a public terminal at a tram station.

She answered on the first ring.

"Where are you?"

"Victor helped me escape."

Silence.

"He gave me a phrase," Noah continued. "Orpheus returns alone."

Evelyn inhaled sharply.

"What does it mean?"

"It means Claire never trusted Victor with the whole plan. And neither did I."

Evelyn directed Noah to a disused theater downtown. He entered through an alley and found her waiting beneath a faded poster for an opera called Orpheus. Beside her stood a tall man with a scar through one eyebrow.

Noah recognized him from Claire's files.

Elias Ward.

The missing security specialist.

"You were supposed to protect her," Noah said.

Ward did not defend himself.

"I tried."

"Where is she?"

"In the coffin, if the tracker is accurate."

"Who took her from you?"

Ward looked at Evelyn.

Evelyn turned away.

Noah understood before either spoke.

"You did," he said.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"I moved Claire before Victor could reach the safe house."

May you like

"Then how did Rusk get her?"

Evelyn faced him again. "Because your mother escaped from me."
