Chapter 13 - The Man Calling Himself Thomas)

Hannah canceled the Beacon House meeting.
Cole agreed immediately.
Owen’s preschool security footage was retrieved.
A man had indeed approached the playground fence three weeks earlier.
He wore a baseball cap and glasses.
Facial recognition produced no immediate match.
Richard watched the footage repeatedly.
Then stopped it.
“Zoom in.”
Cole enlarged the man’s hand.
A ring.
Richard stood.
“No.”
Hannah looked at him.
“What?”
“That was Thomas’s.”
The ring carried the Ashford crest with a small crack across the letter A.
Richard had watched his younger brother wear it every day.
Margaret was brought in.
She saw the image.
Her face became white.
“That’s impossible.”
Richard stared at her.
“Who has Thomas’s ring?”
“Nobody.”
“Where was it?”
“With him.”
“At burial?”
“Yes.”
Cole checked cemetery records.
Thomas’s coffin had been moved when the family mausoleum was renovated in 1998.
Richard looked at Margaret.
“Who supervised?”
Margaret said nothing.
“Who?”
“Vale.”
The mausoleum was searched.
Thomas’s coffin was opened under court authorization.
The ring was missing.
But something else was wrong.
The coffin contained remains.
Yet DNA testing produced an impossible result.
They were not Thomas Ashford’s.
Richard sat silently when Cole delivered the news.
Hannah stared.
“Then who is buried there?”
“We’re testing.”
“And Thomas?”
“We don’t know.”
Richard whispered:
“My father identified his body.”
Margaret corrected him.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
“Our grandfather identified the body.”
Richard stared at her.
“You knew?”
“I knew Dad never saw Thomas after he left the house.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because Grandfather said Thomas was dead.”
Richard’s face twisted with rage.
“You let me mourn our brother for forty-seven years!”
“I believed him!”
“Did you?”
Margaret began crying.
For the first time, Hannah believed the tears.
Margaret whispered:
“Thomas threatened to expose everything.”
“What happened?”
“Grandfather sent Vale after him.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“Vale was barely twenty.”
“He was loyal.”
“To a thief.”
“To power.”
Hannah understood the Ashford family differently now.
Project Haven was not a new conspiracy.
It was an inheritance of corruption.
One generation taught the next how silence protected wealth.
Michael had tried to break it.
Perhaps Thomas had too.
Cole received the DNA report on the remains.
The dead boy buried as Thomas Ashford had been approximately seventeen.
Identity unknown.
Richard asked:
“Could Thomas still be alive?”
“He’d be sixty-four.”
“The man at Owen’s school looked around that age.”
Cole agreed.
The facial footage was enhanced.
Richard studied it.
He began crying before anyone said a word.
The jawline.
The eyes.
Even after nearly half a century, he recognized his brother.
“Thomas.”
Hannah touched his arm.
Richard whispered:
“He’s alive.”
But if Thomas had survived, why had he stayed hidden?
And why approach Owen?
They soon received an answer.
A package arrived for Richard.
Inside was the cracked Ashford ring.
And a handwritten note.
RICHARD,
YOU FINALLY STARTED ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS.
DON’T TRUST MARGARET.
DON’T TRUST VALE.
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, DON’T TRUST THE SECOND TRUST.
IT WAS CHANGED AFTER FATHER SIGNED IT.
IF HANNAH ACTIVATES THE RECKONING COMPLETELY, SHE WILL GIVE THEM EXACTLY WHAT THEY NEED.
Richard reread the note.
Hannah stared at the last sentence.
“Them?”
Jonathan looked troubled.
“Vale isn’t working alone.”
Cole agreed.
Richard looked at Thomas’s ring.
His brother had apparently survived.
Michael had apparently discovered him.
And somebody had altered the second trust.
Jonathan suddenly reached for the document.
“What are you doing?”
“Checking something.”
He compared signatures.
Then page numbers.
His face changed.
“The pagination.”
Hannah leaned closer.
“What?”
“Page forty-three is original.”
“And?”
“Page forty-four isn’t.”
Richard stared.
“Meaning?”
Jonathan looked at Hannah.
“Someone inserted part of the Reckoning Protocol after William executed the trust.”
“Which part?”
Jonathan found it.
The provision granting emergency control over frozen assets to an external custodial administrator.
Hannah’s stomach tightened.
“Who is the administrator?”
Jonathan followed the cross-reference.
Then stopped.
Richard asked:
“Who?”
Jonathan turned the page around.
The administrator was:
HAVEN CUSTODIAL PARTNERS.
Hannah stared.
“If I had activated the entire Reckoning…”
Jonathan nodded.
“You would have frozen the Ashford empire.”
“And transferred temporary control…”
“To Haven.”
Richard whispered:
“It was a trap.”
Michael had known.
Thomas had known.
And Hannah had come dangerously close to activating it.
Her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
A man spoke.
“Hannah?”
Her heart stopped.
“Who is this?”
A pause.
Then:
“My name is Thomas Ashford.”
Richard grabbed the phone.
“Thomas?”
Silence.
Then the man began crying.
“Hello, Richie.”
May you like
Richard nearly collapsed.
Nobody had called him Richie since 1979.
