Chapter 7 - Tessa Chooses the Truth
Preston sensed the change almost immediately.
Tessa stopped answering his questions about Greer. She refused to sign the financial documents. She moved the twins out of the company apartment and into a modest rental arranged by her attorney.
Preston responded with flowers, apologies, and promises.
When those failed, he became threatening.
He told Tessa that Greer would destroy her reputation.
He claimed Vale Meridian’s security department had evidence that she had stolen company funds.
He warned that without him, she would never afford the twins’ medical care.
Tessa recorded every conversation.
Meanwhile, Greer finalized the trust committee review.
Three independent trustees examined the amendment, the financial records, Preston’s forged authorization, the false medical evaluation, and Tessa’s evidence.
Their conclusion was unanimous.
Preston had triggered the forfeiture clause.
His marital claims were void.
His executive benefits could be revoked.
His temporary voting authority had been obtained through fraud and could not be exercised.
But the clause alone did not remove him from his corporate position. The board still had to vote.
Preston believed the board belonged to him.
Five directors had been appointed during his rise. Two had personal business relationships with him. Another feared that public scandal would damage the company’s stock value.
Greer needed to force them to choose between Preston and their own legal exposure.
Elias prepared a second file.
It documented every director who had approved suspicious payments without proper review.
Mara drafted notices explaining that failure to act after receiving evidence of misconduct could make the directors personally vulnerable to shareholder claims.
Greer did not threaten them.
She simply prepared to tell them the truth.
Preston scheduled the final board meeting himself.
He chose the penthouse boardroom because he wanted photographers to capture him entering the company’s most prestigious space.
He also demanded that Tessa bring the twins.
“This is about our family’s future,” he told her.
Tessa almost refused.
Then she spoke with Greer.
“Let him create the picture he wants,” Greer said. “The truth will still be standing behind it.”
On the morning of the meeting, Preston arrived carrying one child while Tessa followed with the other.
Employees stopped in the corridors.
Some looked uncomfortable. Others congratulated him.
Preston accepted every word as though he had already inherited an empire.
Greer entered through the private elevator ten minutes later.
She wore white because Helena had always worn white during difficult negotiations.
Mara carried the trust amendment.
Elias carried the financial evidence.
Greer carried the signed divorce papers.
Preston looked at them and smiled.
“You finally made the intelligent choice.”

“No,” she said. “I finally stopped waiting for you to make one.”
