Chapter 2 - Three Days Before the Snow

Three days earlier, Nora had still believed she could save her marriage.

She sat in a corner booth at a quiet hotel restaurant, watching Evan move food around his plate without eating.

Outside the windows, workers were hanging Christmas lights along the avenue. Families passed beneath the glow carrying shopping bags and wrapped gifts.

At their table, the silence felt heavier than winter.

“I want to come home,” Nora said.

Evan did not look at her.

“We’ve discussed this.”

“No. You made a decision and informed me afterward. That is not a discussion.”

“You moved out.”

“You told me you needed space.”

“And you gave it to me.”

“For two weeks. Then you changed the security codes and stopped answering my calls.”

Evan finally lifted his eyes.

“You embarrassed me at the board dinner.”

“I asked why Bianca was sitting in my chair.”

“She works for the company.”

“She works in brand consulting. She had no reason to attend a confidential financing meeting.”

“She was invited.”

“By you.”

Evan leaned back.

“There it is again. The interrogation.”

Nora studied his face.

For eleven years, she had known the smallest signs of his discomfort. The tightening near his mouth. The restless tapping of his thumb against the table. The way he adjusted his cuff links whenever he lied.

He was doing all three.

“Is she living in the mansion?”

“No.”

“Then why did Sophie see her clothes in our bedroom?”

His hand stopped moving.

“You questioned our daughter about my private life?”

“She called me crying.”

“She is six. She misunderstands things.”

“She understands another woman sleeping in her mother’s bed.”

Evan lowered his voice.

“This is why I can’t let you come back yet. You’re unstable.”

The word landed with careful precision.

Nora recognized it immediately.

It was not something Evan had invented. It sounded rehearsed, selected by someone who understood how custody disputes worked.

“Who told you to call me unstable?”

“No one.”

“Was it Bianca?”

He placed his napkin on the table.

“This meeting is over.”

Nora caught his wrist before he could stand.

“Where is Sophie?”

“At home.”

“With whom?”

“My mother.”

“Let me speak to her.”

“She’s asleep.”

“It’s seven thirty.”

“She had a difficult day.”

Nora released him and reached for her phone.

Evan took it before she could unlock the screen.

His movement was quick enough to frighten her.

“Give it back.”

“You need to stop.”

“Give me my phone.”

“Not until you agree to leave Sophie out of this.”

“She is already in it.”

Several diners glanced toward them.

Evan forced a smile and placed the phone on the table.

“You always do this,” he said quietly. “You turn everything into a performance.”

Nora picked up the phone.

A new message appeared.

It came from an unknown number.

Your daughter asked for you tonight.

Below the message was a photograph of Sophie sitting alone on the mansion staircase in pink pajamas.

Nora’s breath caught.

The photograph had been taken from inside the house.

She turned the phone toward Evan.

“Who sent this?”

For the first time that evening, genuine uncertainty crossed his face.

“I don’t know.”

Another message arrived.

Ask him what he signed this morning.

Nora looked at Evan.

“What did you sign?”

“Nothing that concerns you.”

“Custody papers?”

“No.”

“Divorce papers?”

He stood.

“You’ll receive them when my attorney is ready.”

Nora followed him from the restaurant.

“Evan.”

He kept walking.

“Evan, where is Sophie?”

He stopped beside the hotel elevators and faced her.

His voice was calm again, but there was something colder beneath it.

“You will see her when you prove you can behave responsibly.”

The elevator doors opened.

Bianca was standing inside.

She wore a cream coat and held a black leather document case against her side.

For one second, all three of them stared at one another.

Then Bianca smiled.

“Nora. I didn’t know you were here.”

Nora looked at the document case.

A gold label was attached near the handle.

Bennett Family Trust.

Evan stepped into the elevator beside Bianca.

Nora remained in the hallway.

As the doors began to close, she saw Bianca reach for Evan’s hand.

Just before they disappeared, Nora heard Bianca whisper something.

“By Christmas, she won’t have anything left.”
