Chapter 13 - The Door Jessica Opened

Daniel Cho discovered the mechanism.

Jessica's preservation package triggered mandatory reporting at fourteen institutions.

One institution stored archival records from a defense contractor that had collapsed fifteen years earlier.

When the preservation order arrived, an automated compliance process restored a dormant database.

Someone had been waiting for that database to come online.

Within eighteen minutes, an unauthorized party accessed it.

The attacker downloaded one file.

Only one.

Its name:

CARTER SUCCESSION.

Jessica stared at the screen.

"What is it?"

"We don't know."

"The attacker took it before you did?"

"Yes."

"Can you recover it?"

"Possibly."

Jessica looked at Sloan.

"Victoria knew this would happen."

"Maybe."

"No."

Jessica shook her head.

"She knew."

Investigators questioned Victoria again.

This time she talked.

Not because she received immunity.

Because she became afraid of dying.

According to Victoria, five months earlier an unidentified man contacted her.

He knew about Carter Resolution Services.

He knew she had taken Richard's files years earlier.

He offered money.

Then threats.

Victoria was instructed to watch Jessica.

Not harm her.

Not approach her.

Just report behavior.

Then, in December, the instructions changed.

"Create a family crisis."

Jessica stared through the interview glass.

Sloan asked Victoria, "Why the child?"

Victoria looked down.

"They said Jessica's protective response would be immediate."

Jessica felt sick.

"You hit Chloe because somebody profiled me."

Victoria whispered, "I didn't know they wanted the network."

"You hit a five-year-old."

"I lost control."

"No."

Jessica leaned closer.

"You followed instructions until your own cruelty made it easier."

Victoria began crying.

Jessica felt nothing.

"Who gave you the instructions?"

"I never knew."

"How did they contact you?"

"Encrypted app."

"What did they call themselves?"

Victoria hesitated.

"Custodian."

Jessica remembered the ledger.

GUARDIAN.

Similar language.

"Where is Thomas?"

Victoria shook her head.

"I only know where he was."

"Where?"

"Milwaukee."

"What address?"

Victoria gave it.

An old warehouse near the Menomonee River.

Federal agents arrived before sunset.

Empty.

But not abandoned.

A bed.

Food.

Medical supplies.

Maps.

Newspapers.

A framed photograph of Jessica.

Another of Chloe.

Jessica entered after the site was cleared.

She touched Chloe's picture.

Her father had known his granddaughter.

Maybe only from afar.

Maybe through surveillance.

On the desk lay a cassette recorder.

Ancient.

Deliberate.

A label read:

JESSICA.

Sloan inserted the tape.

Static.

Then a man's voice.

Older than Jessica remembered.

But unmistakable.

"Jess, if you're hearing this, then I failed to keep the door closed."

Jessica sat down.

Her knees would no longer support her.

Thomas continued.

"I know what you believe about me. Most of it was necessary. Some of it was cowardice. I won't ask forgiveness on a recording."

Jessica pressed both hands to her mouth.

"I stayed away because your grandmother and I discovered something larger than fraud. The money wasn't the purpose. It was the map."

Sloan exchanged a glance with Daniel.

Thomas's voice continued.

"The companies identify people. Officers. Contractors. Judges. Developers. Anyone positioned to move resources without attracting attention."

Jessica felt cold.

"If Carter Succession has been opened, do not trust the person who claims to bring you the original file."

The tape crackled.

Then Thomas said:

May you like

"Especially if that person is David."

Jessica stopped breathing.
