Chapter 14 - The Place Charles Was Waiting)

The video lasted eleven seconds.

Then the phone died.

Mara grabbed it.

“Call back.”

Gabriel tried.

Nothing.

Alexander replayed the recording.

The girl’s voice.

Mom.

Not Mara’s name.

Mom.

Someone had told her exactly who Mara was.

And Grandpa.

Charles.

Mara’s knees weakened.

“He’s alive.”

Alexander stared at the black screen.

“My father is with her.”

Victoria whispered, “Or Evelyn wants us to think that.”

Mara turned on her.

“Do not.”

Victoria said nothing more.

Gabriel’s team extracted metadata from the video.

Most had been scrubbed.

One fragment remained.

GPS data.

A rural area outside Cold Spring, New York.

They drove before sunrise.

Federal agents surrounded the region.

The coordinates led to an abandoned summer camp beside a reservoir.

Cabins stood empty.

Windows dusty.

An old dining hall overlooked the water.

Mara stepped from the SUV.

Something felt familiar.

She had never been there.

But she knew the scent.

Pine.

Lake water.

Wood smoke.

Then she realized.

The photograph Rebecca showed her.

Her daughter at three years old.

The beach behind her matched the reservoir.

Mara started running.

Alexander followed.

“Mara.”

She reached the dining hall.

The door stood open.

Inside were five plates on a table.

Four blue.

One yellow.

Children’s plates.

Old.

Unused.

Beside them were photographs.

The boys at different ages.

Milo learning to ride a bicycle.

Mason asleep with a book over his face.

Max in the emergency room after a migraine.

Micah leaving the hospital after pneumonia.

Mara stared.

Charles had watched them too.

Alexander looked sick.

“He knew where you were.”

“For years.”

“And never told us.”

Mara’s anger returned.

“So many people protected us without asking whether we wanted their protection.”

Gabriel searched the rooms.

No people.

Then Adrian called from the vehicle.

“I remember the camp.”

Alexander put him on speaker.

“When?”

“Dad brought me here when I was seventeen.”

“Why?”

“He said if anything ever happened to the family, I should look beneath the dining hall.”

Gabriel found a basement door.

Locked.

Alexander kicked it open.

Concrete stairs.

A hidden room below.

Inside were boxes.

Not wealth.

Not weapons.

Children’s belongings.

A tiny pink coat.

Shoes.

Books.

Drawings.

Mara picked up one.

Five stick figures.

Four boys.

One girl.

Two adults.

Above one adult was written MOM.

Above the other:

DAD.

Mara cried silently.

Alexander stood beside her.

The drawing had been made recently.

Their daughter imagined them.

Or had been taught to.

A sound came from behind the storage shelves.

Mara spun.

A hidden panel opened.

An elderly man stepped out.

Alexander froze.

Charles Whitaker.

Alive.

Gray hair.

Deep lines around his eyes.

But unmistakably his father.

Alexander stared.

Charles whispered, “Son.”

Alexander hit him.

The punch knocked Charles backward.

Gabriel moved.

Mara stopped him.

“No.”

Alexander stood over his father.

“Twelve years.”

Charles wiped blood from his lip.

“I deserve that.”

“Twelve years!”

“I know.”

“You let me bury you.”

“Yes.”

“You let me think Adrian was dead.”

“I believed that kept him hidden.”

“You knew about my children.”

Charles’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“You knew Mara was alive.”

“Yes.”

Alexander hit the wall instead of his father.

“Why?”

Charles did not defend himself.

“Because every time I tried to fix one thing, I created another threat.”

Mara stepped forward.

“Where is my daughter?”

Charles looked at her.

“Safe.”

“Where?”

“With Evelyn.”

“I want her.”

“You should.”

“Now.”

Charles hesitated.

Mara’s expression changed.

“Do not tell me you know better than I do what is safe for my child.”

“I don’t.”

“Then where is she?”

Charles looked toward the reservoir.

“Evelyn will bring her when the Circle is exposed.”

Alexander laughed bitterly.

“No more conditions.”

Charles studied his son.

“You think I still control this.”

“Don’t you?”

“No.”

That changed everything.

Charles explained.

Three years earlier he discovered Everett Vale had located the girl.

Evelyn moved her immediately.

But Vale learned enough to understand that the archive heir lived.

Since then, the Circle fractured.

One faction wanted the children killed.

Another wanted them controlled.

A third wanted Charles alive long enough to reveal the archive locations.

“Why not go to the FBI?” Mara asked.

“I did.”

Gabriel frowned.

“When?”

“Nine years ago.”

“What happened?”

“The agent I contacted was Circle.”

Charles looked at Gabriel.

“So was the next.”

“Names?”

Charles gave them.

Gabriel recognized one as a former deputy director.

Another as a federal judge.

The scale was staggering.

Alexander asked, “What happens now?”

Charles looked at Mara.

“The succession trigger has already begun.”

“The trusts?”

“Yes.”

“Can it be stopped?”

“Not by Victoria.”

“Vale?”

“Maybe.”

“What do they need?”

Charles’s answer chilled them.

“The children.”

Mara stepped backward.

“Why?”

“To challenge identity.”

Charles explained that bloodline activation required living biometric confirmation from each heir.

Milo.

Mason.

Max.

Micah.

And the girl.

“Five heirs,” Alexander whispered.

“Yes.”

“What happens if one is missing?”

“The activation pauses.”

“And if one dies?”

Charles looked at the floor.

“The dead heir’s authority transfers proportionally to the survivors.”

Mara understood immediately.

“So killing one doesn’t stop it.”

“No.”

“Killing all five?”

Silence.

Charles did not answer.

He did not need to.

Alexander’s face turned hard.

“Where is Vale?”

“I don’t know.”

Charles crossed the room.

He opened a steel case.

Inside were documents identifying members of the Circle.

Hundreds.

“This is enough to begin.”

“Begin what?”

“Destroying them.”

Gabriel picked up the first file.

A United States senator.

Second.

A hospital executive.

Third.

A banking chairman.

Fourth.

A federal prosecutor.

Mara felt nauseated.

Charles looked at her.

“This is why Evelyn kept your daughter hidden.”

“And where is Evelyn?”

Charles smiled sadly.

“If she wants to be found, she will be.”

Alexander said, “I’m done with people disappearing.”

His phone rang.

The protected-residence number.

He answered immediately.

Mrs. Alvarez screamed through the phone.

“Alexander!”

His blood froze.

“What happened?”

“The boys!”

Mara grabbed his arm.

“What?”

Alexander put the call on speaker.

Mrs. Alvarez was crying.

“The fire alarm went off. Security moved us downstairs. Someone released smoke in the stairwell.”

Mara’s heart stopped.

“Where are they?”

“Three are here.”

Silence.

Mara whispered, “Three?”

Mrs. Alvarez sobbed.

“Milo is gone.”

The entire room changed.

Alexander turned toward Charles.

Charles went pale.

Mara’s voice became almost inaudible.

“Who took my son?”

Gabriel’s phone buzzed.

A photograph arrived.

Milo sat inside a dark vehicle.

Alive.

Terrified.

Beside him sat Everett Vale.

Vale smiled into the camera.
