Chapter 9 - The Visitor at the Garden Door

Emily called Officer Hale before going downstairs.

The woman remained beneath the garden light, looking directly at the camera.

She appeared to be in her late thirties or early forties. Her dark hair was streaked with silver. A scar ran from her left temple toward her cheek.

In one hand she held the half-heart pendant.

In the other she carried a large envelope.

The patrol car arrived within four minutes.

By then, the woman was gone.

The envelope had been placed against the rear door.

Officer Hale examined it before allowing Emily to touch it.

Inside was a recent photograph of Leah leaving school.

A wave of nausea passed through Emily.

On the back, someone had written:

Rachel exposed her. Move the child before Monday.

There was also a key card from a hotel near Lake Geneva and a note asking Emily to come alone at nine the following morning.

Officer Hale advised her not to go.

Nadia agreed.

Emily went anyway, but she did not go alone.

Officer Hale’s team occupied two rooms on the same floor. Nadia waited in the hotel lobby. Serena stayed with Leah at the house.

At nine precisely, Emily entered Room 614.

The dark-haired woman sat beside the window.

She wore a gray coat and held the matching heart pendant.

“Anna?” Emily asked.

The woman nodded.

Emily closed the door.

“You have been alive all these years.”

“Barely.”

“Why did you not come for Leah?”

Anna looked down at her hands.

“I did.”

“The night of the fire?”

“Yes.”

“Leah remembers you.”

Anna’s eyes filled with tears.

“I put her in the toy chest because the hallway was burning. Claire found her before I could get back.”

“Why did you leave?”

“Men were watching the house.”

“Julian Vale’s men?”

Anna looked toward the window.

“Julian is not Leah’s father.”

Emily remained silent.

“His father, Adrian, was.”

“Adrian Vale died six years ago.”

“That is what the family announced.”

“You believe he is alive?”

“I know he was alive eighteen months after his reported death.”

Emily thought of the annual birthday payments.

“Who sends the money?”

“I do.”

“Through Claire’s account?”

“Claire created the account so I could help Leah without exposing myself.”

“Where did you get ten thousand dollars every year?”

“From the settlement Adrian’s family paid me to disappear.”

Emily studied her.

“If they paid you to disappear, why are they still watching Leah?”

“Because the agreement required me to surrender the child. Claire helped me escape before I signed.”

“Did Adrian want Leah?”

“Not as a daughter. As proof.”

“Proof of what?”

Anna hesitated.

“The Vale family foundation was built on a condition in Adrian’s father’s will. Control passed only to a direct descendant who produced a legitimate heir.”

“Leah was born outside marriage.”

“Adrian married me privately.”

Emily stared at her.

“The marriage records were sealed through political connections. If Leah’s existence becomes public, she may have a claim to the entire Vale estate.”

Emily understood Claire’s warning.

Do not let them turn her into an inheritance.

“Does Julian know?” she asked.

“He suspects. He has controlled the foundation since Adrian’s supposed death. If Leah’s identity is confirmed, every transaction he authorized could be challenged.”

“So Rachel tried to sell him the information.”

“She tried to sell it to both sides.”

“What does that mean?”

“Rachel contacted Julian first. Then she contacted one of Adrian’s former business partners and offered evidence that Leah existed.”

Emily felt a flash of fury.

“She created a bidding war over a child.”

Anna nodded.

“Claire stopped her. That is why Rachel came for the files.”

“Did Rachel start the fire?”

“I saw her knock over the candle, but the wall was already hot. Someone had damaged the wiring before she arrived.”

“Who?”

“I could not prove it.”

“Why come back now?”

“Rachel’s court petition made Leah’s name and address searchable. Julian’s investigators accessed the docket yesterday.”

Emily looked toward the hotel door, reassured by the knowledge that officers waited nearby.

“What happens Monday?”

“A private security team is scheduled to inspect the trust property.”

“Inspect?”

“They will claim there is a dispute concerning assets purchased with Vale money. It gives them a reason to enter the house.”

“They cannot enter without permission.”

“They do not need to enter. They need Leah’s DNA.”

Emily thought of the photograph taken outside the school.

A discarded cup. A strand of hair. Anything could be used.

“Why should I trust you?” Emily asked.

“You shouldn’t.”

Anna placed the half-heart pendant on the table.

“But Claire trusted me enough to save this.”

She opened a leather folder.

Inside was a copy of her marriage certificate to Adrian Vale and Leah’s original birth record.

The birth record did not list Leah Carter.

It listed Leah Anna Vale.

Emily read the date.

It matched Leah’s birthday.

Anna slid another document across the table.

It was a sworn statement signed by Adrian.

He acknowledged Leah as his daughter and assigned his interest in several properties to a protective trust.

One property address was familiar.

The family home.

“Claire did not purchase the house with her inheritance,” Emily said.

“Not entirely.”

“Adrian transferred it?”

“He created a chain of companies to hide the source.”

“Then Julian may have a claim.”

“No. Adrian transferred it irrevocably to Leah.”

Anna pointed to a clause near the bottom.

The transfer becomes public if any member of the Vale family attempts to interfere with Leah’s guardian.

Emily almost laughed.

“Then Rachel’s petition triggered it.”

“Yes.”

“What happens now?”

“The records are released to the estate court. Julian loses control of several assets.”

“Does he know?”

“He will by Monday.”

Emily looked at the woman sitting before her.

“You said Rachel exposed Leah. But you left a photograph outside my house. You approached her school.”

“I did not take that photograph.”

Anna’s voice shook.

“It was sent to me yesterday.”

“By whom?”

“Someone using Adrian’s old private number.”

Emily’s phone rang.

Officer Hale’s name appeared on the screen.

She answered.

“Emily, you need to return to the house.”

“What happened?”

“Rachel was arrested this morning while attempting to leave the state.”

“For fraud?”

“For document theft, financial conspiracy and witness tampering.”

Emily felt no satisfaction. Not yet.

“Did she say anything?”

“She asked to speak with you.”

“I am not meeting her.”

“She says there is a second child.”

Emily looked at Anna.

The woman had heard every word.

Her face went completely still.

Officer Hale continued.

“Rachel claims Claire’s records show that Leah was not the only baby born that night.”

Anna stood so quickly that the chair struck the wall.

“That is impossible.”

Emily ended the call.

“Was Leah a twin?”

“No.”

“Are you certain?”

“I was conscious during the birth.”

“Then why would Rachel say it?”

“To make you open the final records.”

“What final records?”

Anna looked toward the envelope Claire had addressed to Leah.

“You have not given Leah her letter yet.”

“She is six.”

“Claire did not write it for Leah to read alone.”

May you like

Anna picked up her coat.

“She wrote it for the day someone discovered what happened at the hospital.”
