Chapter 12 - the father who returned from the dead

Naomi stopped Jonathan’s plane before takeoff.
But neither Jonathan nor Victor was on board when agents entered.
The video call had been routed through the aircraft’s system from another location.
Claire’s kidnappers abandoned their vehicle near the airport. Blood samples inside belonged to no one in the Halstead family. The trail ended there.
By sunrise, every news network reported that Victor Halstead might be alive.
Halstead Athletic Group shares fell sharply. Board members demanded Evan resign until questions about the trust, Sabrina and Victor’s staged death could be resolved.
Evan refused.
He entered an emergency board meeting with Leah beside him.
Some directors objected to her presence.
Evan looked down the table.
“Leah Bennett and her daughter were harmed because members of this company helped conceal crimes committed by my family. She stays.”
The room fell silent.
Jonathan’s financial records revealed that three board members had accepted secret payments. Naomi arrested them before the meeting ended.
Evan then announced an independent investigation into Victor’s leadership and placed all disputed family shares into temporary oversight.
“You are surrendering control,” one director said.
“I am preventing a four-year-old child from becoming a corporate weapon.”
After the meeting, Leah found him alone in Victor’s office.
“You did the right thing.”
“It may destroy the company.”
“Then build something better.”
He looked at her.
“You make everything sound possible.”
“No. I make it sound necessary.”
Their closeness changed the room.
For one moment, the missing years seemed to shrink.
Evan lifted a hand toward her face but stopped before touching her.
“I don’t know what I’m allowed to feel.”
Leah’s voice softened.
“You’re allowed to feel anything. You’re not allowed to assume it fixes everything.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
“Yes.”
She stepped closer.
“I loved you before the accident. Part of me never stopped. But I learned how to live without you because I had to.”
“I’m not asking you to forget that.”
“Good.”
“I’m asking for the chance to know who you became.”
Leah held his gaze.
“That chance begins with Ellie.”
Evan nodded.
They did not kiss.
The restraint meant more than a rushed reunion would have.
That afternoon, Sabrina’s hearing began.
The ballroom video was played in court. Leah’s recording was admitted as evidence. Emails proved Sabrina blocked every attempt Leah made to contact Evan.
Sabrina pleaded guilty to assault, intimidation, evidence tampering and conspiracy to interfere with a paternity claim.
In exchange for cooperation against Jonathan and Northstar, prosecutors recommended a reduced sentence.
Before the judge ruled, Sabrina requested permission to address Leah.
Leah agreed.
Sabrina stood in restraints.
“I spent years believing that if I secured the right name, house and marriage, I would become untouchable. When I learned about Ellie, I did not see a child. I saw the person who could take those things away.”
Leah remained still.
“That does not excuse what I did.”
“No.”
“I know.”
Sabrina looked toward Evan.
“I also know that apologizing does not require either of you to forgive me.”
The judge sentenced her to prison and ordered restitution to Leah.
It was not the maximum sentence.
It was not freedom.
For Sabrina, it was the first consequence her family could not purchase.
As officers led her away, she turned toward Naomi.
“My father keeps emergency properties under names taken from old hockey teams. Search the abandoned Northstar Arena near Lake Briar.”
Naomi’s team reached the arena before sunset.
The building had been closed for twelve years.
Inside the underground medical wing, they found evidence that Victor had been held there after his staged death.
They also found Claire’s bracelet.
A surveillance screen showed two vehicles leaving hours earlier.
One traveled north.
The other headed toward the Halstead mansion.
Naomi called Evan.
“Someone is coming back to the house.”
Evan looked outside.
A black car had stopped beyond the gates.
May you like
The rear door opened.
Victor Halstead stepped onto the road alone.
