Chapter 8 - the lion without a kingdom

Salvatore Moretti had once been the second most powerful man in Vincent’s organization.
He had taught Vincent how to negotiate, how to identify a lie, and how to enter a dangerous room without revealing fear. When Vincent shut down the Crown Room and transformed the family’s businesses into legal companies, Salvatore had publicly supported him.
Privately, he had called Vincent weak.
Marco pushed Salvatore into a chair.
“He fired through the restaurant window,” Marco said. “The shot wasn’t aimed at anyone. It was meant to create confusion.”
“And make Marco look guilty,” Tony added.
Salvatore glanced at the scratched cuff links Marco had placed on the table.
“An effective plan.”
“Where is Mara Reyes?” Vincent asked.
Salvatore laughed softly.
“You think I receive that level of information?”
“You cut the cameras.”
“I arranged for them to be cut.”
“You ordered Sophie taken upstairs.”
“That was not my decision.”
Vincent believed him.
Salvatore would threaten adults without hesitation, but even at his worst, he had never targeted children. That distinction did not make him innocent. It only meant another person had changed the order.
“Who rebuilt the Crown Room?” Vincent asked.
“People who understood the city requires management.”
“You mean ownership.”
“Call it whatever allows you to sleep.”
Tony placed the empty Julian Cross envelope in front of him.
“Why was his file removed?”
Salvatore’s eyes moved to the label.
“Perhaps Julian removed it.”
“Or perhaps he never needed one,” Vincent said.
Salvatore’s smile faded slightly.
“You always disliked him.”
“I trusted him.”
“That is worse.”
Sophie stood beside Mrs. Bell at the other end of the room. Salvatore noticed the bell around her neck.
For the first time, genuine surprise crossed his face.
“Elena’s bell.”
Vincent stepped between them.
“How do you know it?”
Salvatore leaned back.
“Because I was there the night your father found you at the café.”
“You told me he never discovered the location.”
“I lied.”
The room became silent.
“Why?”
“Elena offered your father a bargain. She would send you away safely, and in return, she would work for him.”
Sophie gripped Mrs. Bell’s hand.
Vincent stared at his uncle.
“What did he make her do?”
“Keep records.”
“The Crown Room records?”
“She knew every payment, every secret, every official purchased by your father. Elena created the first ledger.”
Mara had not discovered the conspiracy by accident. She had inherited the final piece of her mother’s work.
“Where is that ledger?” Vincent asked.
“No one knows. Your father searched for it until the day he died.”
“Did Elena die because of it?”
Salvatore looked away.
“That answer belongs to someone else.”
“Who?”
Before he responded, the tunnel lights flashed red.
An alarm sounded.
Marco checked the security screen.
“Movement at both entrances.”
Armed officers entered the café above.
Captain Holcomb’s voice echoed through a loudspeaker.
“Vincent Moretti, remain where you are. We have a warrant to search the property and arrest everyone inside.”
Tony looked at the filing cabinets.
“They’re here for the evidence.”
Vincent removed the encrypted drive from his pocket and handed it to Sophie.
“Put this back inside the bell.”
“What are you going to do?”
“Give them what they expect.”
He turned to Marco.
“Take Sophie and Mrs. Bell through the eastern tunnel.”
Sophie shook her head.
“You said you wouldn’t disappear.”
“I’m not disappearing. I’m staying where everyone can see me.”
She looked unconvinced.
Vincent placed his gold lion pin in her hand again.
“Your mother needs the information in that bell. Protect it.”
Sophie closed her fingers around it.
“What about you?”
Vincent glanced toward the stairs as police boots struck the floor above.
“I’m going to learn which officers are afraid of a little girl carrying the truth.”
Captain Holcomb descended with eight officers.
He pointed toward Vincent.
“You’re under arrest for kidnapping Mara Reyes and her daughter.”
Sophie stopped at the tunnel entrance.
“That’s a lie!”
Holcomb’s eyes found her.
Then they dropped to the silver bell around her neck.
“Secure the child,” he ordered.
None of the officers moved.
Holcomb raised his weapon toward Vincent.
A second voice came from the stairwell.
“Lower it, Captain.”
Julian Cross stepped into the tunnel holding an official city prosecutor’s badge.

For one hopeful second, Sophie believed help had arrived.
Then she saw the silver lion cuff links at Julian’s wrists.
