THE CHECKS THEY THREW AWAY / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10 - THE GRANDMOTHER WHO CAME BACK

Richard released Claire and lowered the gun.

Not because Diane had ordered him to, but because Evelyn’s presence unsettled him more deeply than any weapon.

“You staged your death,” he said.

“Yes.”

“You planned to frame me.”

“I planned to watch what you did when you believed I could no longer stop you.”

Richard laughed bitterly.

“And what did you learn?”

“That I waited too long to admit what you had become.”

Evelyn approached the scattered register pages.

Ethan sat in the snow, blood running from his lip.

Claire helped him stand.

Diane remained near the tunnel entrance, the pistol steady in her hand.

Claire looked at her.

“You took Grandma from the transport.”

“I intercepted her before Richard’s men could,” Diane replied.

“Then why did Eleanor say you had her?”

“Because I did.”

“Why didn’t you tell us?”

Diane’s mouth tightened.

“Because I did not know whom to trust.”

“You worked with Marcus.”

“I pretended to.”

Samuel emerged from the tunnel with Jonah and two officers behind him.

“He is telling the truth,” Diane said quickly. “Marcus used my accounts, but I copied every transfer.”

Jonah aimed his weapon.

“Put the gun down.”

Diane placed it carefully in the snow.

Richard still held Claire’s gun.

Jonah turned toward him.

“You too.”

Richard looked at Evelyn.

“You created this.”

“No,” Evelyn said. “I concealed it.”

“You raised me to protect the family name.”

“I raised you to understand that the name carried obligations.”

“You handed control to Claire because she preserved a piece of paper.”

“I chose Claire because she preserved what others mocked before knowing its worth.”

Richard looked at Claire with open hatred.

“She is weak.”

Evelyn’s voice became firm.

“Kindness is not weakness. Restraint is not weakness. Refusing to become cruel when cruelty is rewarded is not weakness.”

Richard’s fingers tightened around the gun.

Jonah stepped forward.

“Drop it.”

Richard raised the weapon.

Ethan moved first.

He struck Richard’s arm upward.

The gun fired into the night.

Officers tackled Richard to the ground.

Claire watched her father’s face press into the snow as Jonah handcuffed him.

For years, Richard had occupied every room as though he owned the air inside it.

Now he looked small.

Ordinary.

Human in the most disappointing sense.

Evelyn swayed.

Claire caught her.

“You need a doctor.”

“I need the register secured.”

“The house is burning.”

“The records in the vault are protected, but those pages are original trust instructions.”

Samuel and Ethan gathered the remaining documents.

One page had landed near the open grave.

Claire picked it up.

Her mother’s name appeared near the bottom.

ELIZABETH ANNE WHITAKER

PRIMARY SUCCESSOR

Below it, another line had been covered with black ink.

Claire held the page toward the firelight.

“Why was the next name removed?”

Evelyn saw it.

Her expression changed.

“That page should not exist.”

“What do you mean?”

“The original register was revised after Elizabeth died.”

“Who was listed beneath her?”

Evelyn reached for the page, but Claire moved it away.

“Tell me.”

Before Evelyn could answer, a gunshot sounded from the cemetery road.

Diane screamed and fell.

Jonah spun toward the trees.

A vehicle accelerated beyond the iron fence.

Samuel rushed to Diane.

The bullet had struck her side.

Claire looked at Richard.

He was handcuffed on the ground, smiling.

“Marcus was never the only person transferring money,” he said.

Jonah hauled him upright.

“Who fired?”

Richard looked at the blacked-out name on the page.

“You think this story began with me?”

Evelyn’s face had gone pale.

May you like

Richard laughed as officers led him away.

“Ask Mother who taught me how to cut a brake line.”
