Chapter 8 - The Story Anthony Sold
Anthony responded to the investigation by going public.
Through an attorney, he released a statement describing himself as a loyal husband who had attempted to protect a family business during Marissa’s emotional decline.
He claimed every transfer had been authorized.
He described the penthouse confrontation as a private marital dispute manipulated for corporate purposes.
Several gossip sites repeated his version.
Photographs from the reception showed Eleanor crying and Anthony standing protectively beside her. Marissa appeared cold, holding a canceled card while guests watched.
The image spread quickly.
Headlines called her ruthless.
Commentators debated whether an heiress had financially controlled her husband and humiliated his mother.
Vale Meridian’s public relations team urged Marissa to release the recordings immediately.
She refused.
“No fragments,” she said. “We release verified facts through the proper process.”
For two weeks, Anthony controlled the public story.
Then Eleanor’s messages became part of a court filing.
In one exchange, Anthony instructed her to provoke Marissa during the reception.
Make the card issue public, he had written. If she reacts, let people see it.
In another, Eleanor asked whether buying the villa before the annual meeting was too risky.
Anthony replied that once Marissa was removed, no one would question it.
The most damaging message had been sent the morning of the locksmith incident.
Anthony wrote, If she refuses to open the door, say you are afraid for Julian. Security will have to act.
The court released the filing.
The public story changed overnight.
But Marissa received no satisfaction from watching strangers turn against Anthony.
She had learned how quickly public sympathy followed whichever version appeared simplest.
At the custody hearing, Anthony sat across the courtroom in a navy suit.
He looked exactly as he had during their wedding.
Calm.
Polished.
Reasonable.
His attorney argued that the financial investigation should not determine his relationship with Julian.
Marissa agreed.
She did not ask the court to remove Anthony from Julian’s life.
She asked for supervised contact until the criminal and psychological evaluations were complete.
Anthony was given an opportunity to speak.
“I love my son,” he said. “Whatever mistakes I made in business, I have always been a good father.”
Marissa watched him carefully.
She wanted the statement to be true.
The judge asked whether he accepted responsibility for falsely claiming Julian might be in danger inside the penthouse.
Anthony hesitated.
“My concern was genuine.”
The judge looked at the messages.
“You instructed your mother to raise that claim before you arrived.”
“My words have been taken out of context.”
“And the locksmith?”
“I believed I had a right to enter.”
“And the canceled access notice?”
“I was under stress.”
Every answer protected Anthony.
None protected Julian.
The judge granted temporary sole custody to Marissa, supervised visits for Anthony, and a strict prohibition against discussing the case with the child.
Outside the courtroom, Anthony approached Marissa before security stopped him.
“You turned my son against me.”
Marissa looked directly at him.
“Julian still asks when you are coming home.”
Anthony’s anger weakened.
Marissa continued.
“I have never told him you are a bad person. I told him adults sometimes make choices that require distance.”
“You destroyed our family.”
“You tried to turn our child into evidence against me.”
Anthony stepped closer.
“You think you won?”

“No,” Marissa said. “I think Julian lost something he deserved to have.”
She walked away before he could answer.
