Chapter 14 - The Trial of Evelyn Mercer

The public learned Evelyn’s name before noon.

News channels displayed photographs from the wedding, the hospital, and the ruins beside Lake Marrow. Reporters called her an escaped experiment, an Ormond controller, and the possible leader of an international conspiracy.

The leaked files were incomplete.

Some showed Evelyn as a child victim.

Others showed her entering codes that released dangerous subjects.

Without context, both versions appeared true.

Federal investigators placed her under protective detention.

Margaret was taken to an undisclosed facility.

Daniel underwent neurological treatment using the restoration sequence Adrian had provided.

Sophie remained with Caroline.

Evelyn hated the separation, but armed strangers had already appeared near Sophie’s school and home. Some wanted answers. Others believed the child contained hidden access codes.

Preston survived surgery.

He agreed to testify about Vivian’s network in exchange for reduced charges.

Julian remained missing.

Adrian vanished.

Three weeks after the archive files leaked, a federal tribunal began closed hearings.

Evelyn sat beneath harsh lights while officials questioned her for twelve hours.

“Did you release the Saint Ormond subjects?”

“Yes, when I was a child.”

“Did you knowingly activate the archive at Lake Marrow?”

“No.”

“Did you direct Marcus Hale to release classified material?”

“I directed him to preserve evidence.”

“Did you transfer control of the archive to yourself?”

“No.”

“Can you prove that?”

“The archive was destroyed.”

One official leaned forward.

“Convenient.”

Evelyn looked at the observation window.

Caroline sat beyond it with Sophie.

Daniel was not present.

His doctors said his memories remained unstable.

The tribunal played a recovered recording.

A child’s voice spoke.

Evelyn recognized herself.

“When I grow up, I will find all of you.”

The official paused the recording.

“Did you say that?”

“I was eight.”

“You also said you would finish what Zero started.”

“I don’t remember.”

“Do you expect us to believe every damaging action resulted from conditioning?”

“No. I expect you to understand that children cannot consent to becoming weapons.”

The doors opened.

Preston entered with a federal escort.

He looked pale, but he walked without assistance.

He testified that Vivian controlled accounts across Ashford Holdings.

He admitted planting the phone at the wedding.

He admitted helping conceal Daniel’s survival.

Then the prosecutor asked who had ordered Sophie’s accusation.

Preston looked at Evelyn.

“Caroline Mercer.”

Caroline stood behind the glass.

Her face emptied.

Evelyn leaned forward.

“That’s a lie.”

Preston continued.

“Caroline said Sophie needed to be removed from the ballroom before Vivian arrived.”

“Why would she frame Sophie?”

“To provoke Evelyn into activating the security system.”

The prosecutor displayed hotel records.

Caroline had entered an override code thirty seconds before the camera captured Preston planting the phone.

The code ensured the camera remained active.

The entire confrontation had been designed to expose Preston.

But Caroline had not predicted the kidnapping.

Evelyn looked through the glass.

Caroline began crying.

The tribunal called her into the room.

She admitted part of it.

“I knew Vivian planned to attend,” she said. “I needed proof connecting her to Preston.”

“So you used Sophie?” Evelyn asked.

“I never meant for her to be hurt.”

“You planted evidence on a child.”

“Preston planted it.”

“Because you told him to.”

“I told him to remove you from the ballroom. I believed he would create an argument, nothing more.”

“You approved Beatrice’s invitation.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To bring Vivian into camera range.”

The prosecutor asked, “Who helped you design the plan?”

Caroline looked toward the floor.

“Julian.”

Evelyn felt the pieces shifting again.

Julian knew about Vivian.

Julian knew the camera would record Preston.

Julian had been drugged before he could be questioned.

Or had pretended to be.

The tribunal adjourned.

Federal agents arrested Caroline for conspiracy, evidence tampering, and child endangerment.

Sophie screamed as they took her aunt away.

Evelyn pressed both hands against the observation glass.

Caroline looked back.

“I’m sorry.”

Evelyn could not answer.

That evening, Daniel finally asked to see her.

He sat in a rehabilitation room overlooking the city.

His face looked tired, but his eyes recognized her.

“You came.”

“I almost didn’t.”

“I deserve that.”

“Yes.”

He looked at his hands.

“I remember pieces.”

“Do you remember Julian?”

“Yes.”

“Was he part of the network?”

“Julian was the network’s heir.”

“Which Julian?”

Daniel looked up.

“That is the problem.”

He explained that the original Julian and his replacement had lived under the same identity at different periods. After Saint Ormond burned, one was raised by the Ashford family. The other remained inside Vivian’s program.

Daniel never learned which one eventually married Caroline.

“Could the man at the wedding have been Adrian disguised as you and Julian at different times?”

“No. Adrian’s methods are convincing, but he cannot maintain two identities simultaneously.”

“Then where is the second Julian?”

Daniel’s expression darkened.

“I think he has been inside our lives for years.”

“Who?”

“I don’t remember his current face.”

Evelyn showed him photographs from the wedding.

Guests.

Security officers.

Family members.

Hospital staff.

Daniel studied them one by one.

He stopped at Marcus Hale.

His hand began trembling.

“What is it?”

Daniel enlarged the photograph.

Marcus wore a ring on his right hand.

The Ashford trustee crest.

“That’s J-4R,” Daniel whispered.

Evelyn stared at him.

“Marcus saved us.”

“He also had access to every camera, every safe house, every piece of evidence.”

Evelyn called Ortiz.

No answer.

She called Caroline’s escort team.

No answer.

She called the secure residence where Sophie had been moved.

A man answered.

His voice was calm.

“Evelyn.”

It was Marcus.

“Where is my daughter?”

“With me.”

“Why?”

“To keep her alive.”

“From whom?”

“Daniel.”

Evelyn looked at her husband.

Marcus continued.

“Check the rehabilitation room camera.”

Evelyn looked up.

The red security light was off.

Daniel stood slowly.

His expression had changed.

May you like

Marcus whispered through the phone.

“The man in front of you is not your husband.”
