Chapter 7 - The File That Did Not Belong to Ethan)

Ethan had been a healthy baby.
That was what Richard believed.
His pediatric records showed routine infections, normal development, and the expected concerns of a premature birth.
Nothing serious.
Nothing that should affect guardianship.
Jonathan requested certified copies directly from the pediatric practice.
Then he compared them to a set of records found in Victoria's former law office account.
They were not the same.
The altered documents claimed Ethan suffered from neurological abnormalities.
Severe developmental delay.
Unexplained bruising.
Possible signs of neglect.
Sarah read the final page twice.
Her name appeared repeatedly.
Primary caregiver present during reported incidents.
Primary caregiver unable to provide explanation.
Recommended investigation of home environment.
None of it had happened.
Richard stood beside the conference table.
"What was she building?"
Jonathan answered.
"A case."
"For what?"
"To remove Sarah."
"I already know that."
"Not just Sarah."
Jonathan placed another document beside the medical file.
It was a draft petition.
Never filed.
The heading referred to emergency guardianship.
If Richard were deemed temporarily incapable of caring for Ethan because of grief related depression or mental instability, another adult could petition for temporary guardianship.
Richard stared at the page.
"Victoria."
"Potentially."
"She was going to claim I'm mentally unstable."
"She already did in the legal letter."
Richard looked sickened.
Jonathan continued.
"If she married you first, she would have a stronger argument as Ethan's stepmother."
Sarah understood.
"She wasn't waiting for Richard to die."
Jonathan shook his head.
"She may have been preparing options."
Richard walked away from the table.
Sarah could see the thought forming.
Not death.
Incapacity.
A breakdown.
An accident.
An allegation.
Anything that moved control away from Richard long enough for Victoria to step into the center.
"How did she alter medical records?" Sarah asked.
Jonathan tapped one name.
Dr. Warren Price.
The physician's electronic signature appeared on several pages.
Richard recognized the name.
Warren had attended two dinners at the mansion.
He was one of Adrian's friends.
Marcus investigated.
Warren Price was not Ethan's pediatrician.
He was a private neurologist with financial problems.
Three months earlier, Adrian Hale had transferred sixty thousand dollars to a consulting company controlled by Warren's wife.
Police obtained a warrant.
Warren panicked.
Within twenty four hours, he admitted he had created medical documents for Victoria.
He claimed he believed they were part of a hypothetical custody matter.
No one believed him.
But his cooperation gave investigators what they needed.
Text messages.
Victoria had written:
Need stronger language about caregiver instability.
Another:
Make clear father may be impaired by unresolved bereavement.
Then:
If both are unsuitable, spouse becomes obvious solution.
Richard read the messages in silence.
Sarah stood across the room.
She had never seen anger make someone look so empty.
"She was going to take him."
Jonathan said, "She was going to try."
"No."
Richard looked at the photograph of Ethan on his desk.
"She believed she was going to succeed."
The police obtained additional warrants.
Adrian's investment accounts were frozen.
Victoria's hotel rooms were searched.
The burgundy case remained missing.
So did the object that had been hidden in Victoria's dressing room.
Then a detective called Sarah.
They had located the private investigator who photographed Rebecca's house.
His name was Thomas Kell.
Kell claimed Adrian hired him to document "unsafe conditions" around Ethan.
There were no unsafe conditions.
So Adrian had given him instructions to create them.
Photograph Sarah entering a bar.
Photograph Rebecca drinking wine.
Photograph Richard appearing angry.
Normal moments removed from context.
Evidence manufactured through framing.
Sarah felt something cold settle inside her.
Victoria did not simply lie.
She built environments where lies could survive.
Two days later, the court granted Richard a temporary protective order preventing Victoria or Adrian from approaching Ethan.
Richard moved Sarah and Ethan back to the mansion.
The decision frightened Sarah.
"Are you sure?"
"Security is stronger here."
"So is her obsession."
Richard looked toward the nursery.
"I will not let her force my son out of his home."
Sarah understood.
The mansion changed after they returned.
More guards.
New access codes.
Independent cameras.
Locked service entrances.
Visitors screened.
Richard moved his office temporarily into the house.
For several days, nothing happened.
Ethan laughed again.
He crawled across the family room after a wooden train.
Richard began joining him on the floor between meetings.
Sarah watched from the doorway one afternoon.
Richard noticed.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"You have that expression."
"What expression?"
"The one that means you're about to tell me something I won't enjoy."
Sarah smiled.
"You look better."
Richard looked at Ethan.
"So does he."
The quiet lasted six days.
On the seventh, a package arrived.
No return address.
Inside was the burgundy jewelry case.
Richard called Marcus before touching it.
The police opened it.
Empty.
Almost.
Inside the velvet lining was a folded note.
Four words.
You missed the real copy.
Jonathan stared at it.
"What copy?"
Marcus examined the case.
Hidden beneath the false bottom was a tiny memory card.
Not the real copy.
A message.
A challenge.
The card contained one video.
Victoria sitting in a hotel room.
She looked directly into the camera.
"Richard, by the time you're watching this, you have decided I'm a monster."
She smiled sadly.
"Maybe I am."
Richard's jaw tightened.
"But monsters are sometimes made by the people who pretend to be innocent."
The video changed.
Sarah appeared on screen.
Footage from months earlier.
She was in Ethan's nursery.
She lifted him.
He cried.
The clip jumped.
Sarah raised her voice.
"Ethan, stop."
The clip jumped again.
Sarah placed him into the crib more quickly than usual.
Then the screen froze.
Victoria returned.
"Ask Sarah what happened the night Ethan stopped breathing."
The video ended.
Richard turned toward Sarah.
"What is she talking about?"
Sarah felt the blood leave her face.
Because this time, Victoria had not invented the event.
Ethan had stopped breathing.
May you like
For eleven seconds.
And Sarah had never told Richard the whole truth.
