Chapter 7 - What William Bennett Knew

Detective Lena Ortiz arrived with two officers and an emergency medical team.
Emma was examined inside the ambulance. She was cold and frightened, but she had not suffered lasting physical harm.
Claire sat beside her beneath a blanket while Emma drank warm apple juice.
Nathan stood several yards away speaking with an officer.
Margaret remained inside the mansion.
She refused to answer questions without a lawyer.
Marcus arrived shortly afterward.
He took the leather folder from Claire and opened it on the hood of his car.
Inside were bank records, letters, trust documents, and a handwritten statement signed by William Bennett three weeks before his death.
Marcus read silently.
Then he looked at Claire.
“This is bigger than six million dollars.”
“How much bigger?”
“The foundation losses are closer to eleven million. Margaret moved money through shell companies. Nathan signed several authorizations.”
Claire looked toward her husband.
“Does the folder prove he knew?”
“Yes.”
“What about the trust?”
Marcus held up a notarized document.
“William placed all remaining family assets into an irrevocable trust. You are the controlling beneficiary until Emma turns thirty. Nathan receives an annual allowance only if he cooperates with any investigation involving the foundation.”
Claire stared at the document.
“He knew this would happen.”
“He expected Margaret to pressure Nathan into hiding the fraud.”
Marcus unfolded William’s letter.
Claire recognized the unsteady handwriting.
Dear Claire,
If you are reading this, then I failed to repair the damage before my death. I chose you because you understand that a family name is not more valuable than the people harmed in its protection.
Margaret will call this betrayal. Nathan may call it punishment. It is neither. It is the last responsible decision available to me.
Blackwood House does not belong to the person who controls it through fear. It belongs to the person willing to make it safe.
Protect Emma. Protect the foundation. Tell the truth, even if my family refuses to.
Claire stopped reading.
William had always been kind to her, but she had never known how much he understood.
Marcus continued examining the documents.
“There is also evidence Margaret forged two loan guarantees after William died.”
“What does that mean?”
“She used Blackwood House as collateral even though the trust prohibited it.”
“Can the bank take the property?”
“Not if the documents are proven fraudulent. But we need to act quickly.”
Nathan approached slowly.
Detective Ortiz remained close behind him.
“Claire,” he said, “I gave them a statement.”
“Did you tell the truth?”
“Yes.”
“All of it?”
He looked at Marcus.
“All of it.”
Margaret appeared at the front doorway with her attorney, Stephen Cole.
She pointed toward Claire.
“That woman installed illegal surveillance equipment in my home and stole private documents.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“Blackwood House is held by a trust controlled by my client. The cameras were installed in common areas after repeated thefts. The documents were voluntarily surrendered by Nathan Bennett.”
Margaret’s face tightened.
“This is my home.”
“Legally,” Marcus said, “it is not.”
Margaret turned toward Nathan.
“Tell them.”
Nathan did not move.
“Tell them she manipulated your father.”
Nathan looked at his mother.
“Claire did not know about the trust.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I found Father’s letter. He changed the trust after he discovered the forged transfers.”
Margaret’s voice sharpened.
“You signed those transfers.”
“I did.”
“Then you will go down with me.”
Nathan lowered his head.
“Yes.”
For the first time, Margaret looked uncertain.
She had controlled Nathan through the promise that obedience would keep him safe. Now that he had accepted the consequences, her power over him weakened.
Detective Ortiz stepped toward Margaret.
“We need you to come to the station for questioning.”
“I am not going anywhere.”
Her attorney whispered something.
Margaret’s expression became furious.
Before entering the police car, she looked at Claire.
“You think this makes you part of the family?”
Claire held Emma closer.
“No. Protecting my daughter makes us a family. The house is just stone.”
Margaret was taken away.
Nathan watched the vehicle disappear.
Then he turned toward Claire.
“Can I see Emma?”
Emma tightened her arms around Claire.
May you like
Claire answered quietly.
“Not today.”
