Chapter 15 - THE CHILD BEHIND THE GLASS

The upload could not be stopped.

Within minutes, fragments of Edmund’s network appeared across secure government servers, financial exchanges, law enforcement databases, and anonymous news channels.

Some files exposed crimes.

Others contained blackmail.

A few appeared to be false.

No one knew which records could be trusted.

Charles Crowe survived Grace’s gunshot but was arrested before sunrise. Samuel Reed disappeared from the hospital during the confusion. No one knew who helped him escape.

Vanessa was taken into surgery.

The bullet had passed through her side without striking her spine, but the doctors could not promise she would wake quickly.

Edmund Vale was placed in a guarded underground facility.

He answered no questions.

Margaret returned home with a fractured wrist and a silence that worried Lucas more than any confession.

Grace did not return to Vale House.

She stayed at a private medical center with Lily, where specialists examined the implant beneath the child’s shoulder.

They could not identify it.

It had no manufacturer’s mark, no standard circuitry, and no visible power source.

When Lucas visited, Lily sat beside the hospital window drawing three birds.

One black.

One blue.

One white.

Grace stood near the door.

“We need to decide what to tell her,” she said.

“The truth.”

“She is six.”

“She has been lied to by every adult in her life.”

Grace looked down.

“Including me.”

Lucas sat beside Lily.

She pushed the drawing toward him.

“The black bird is Grandma.”

“Why?”

“She knows secret doors.”

“And the white bird?”

“Vanessa. She looks mean, but her wing is broken.”

Lucas touched the blue bird.

“And this one?”

“That’s me.”

“Why are you blue?”

“Because the blue bird carries the key.”

Grace exchanged a look with Lucas.

“Who told you that?” she asked.

“The man in the mirror.”

Lucas turned toward the observation glass.

A doctor stood on the other side, speaking with a nurse.

“What man?”

“The one who visits when everyone sleeps.”

Grace crouched beside her.

“What does he look like?”

Lily picked up a black crayon.

“He has Daddy’s face.”

Lucas felt cold.

“My face?”

“But older.”

Grace stood immediately and opened the door.

Security searched the room, hallway, vents, cameras, and stairwells.

No stranger appeared on the recordings.

At midnight, the doctors prepared to scan Lily’s implant again.

The machine activated.

Every light in the medical center failed.

Emergency power came on three seconds later.

Lily was gone.

The bed restraints had not been cut.

The door remained locked from the inside.

The observation glass was unbroken.

On the pillow lay the blue plastic bird from Grace’s grave.

Beneath it was a new letter.

Lucas opened it with shaking hands.

The handwriting matched his own.

Lucas,

You have been searching for the wrong father.

Edmund built the network, but he did not begin it.

Grace knows who did.

Ask her what happened to your twin brother.

Lucas looked up.

Grace stood at the end of the empty hospital bed.

Her face had turned white.

“I don’t have a twin brother,” Lucas said.

Grace did not answer.

“Grace.”

She backed toward the wall.

“Tell me where Lily is.”

“I don’t know.”

“What happened to my brother?”

Tears filled her eyes.

“Lucas, there are things Edmund removed from your memory.”

“What brother?”

Grace looked at the dark observation glass.

A figure appeared behind it.

A man with Lucas’s face stood in the unlit room beyond the glass.

He was holding Lily’s hand.

Lily looked unharmed.

She smiled at Lucas through the window.

The man raised one finger to his lips.

Then the glass turned black.

Lucas struck it with both hands.

“Lily!”

The lights flickered again.

The observation room was empty.

On the other side of the glass, written in pale blue letters, were five words:
