Chapter 15 - The Name Behind the First Camera

The librarian closed the chapel doors behind her.

Sophie held Evelyn’s hand.

“That’s Ms. Anna.”

The woman looked at Sophie with warmth.

“You remembered.”

Lydia stared as though seeing a ghost.

“You should be dead.”

Anna Vale walked toward the altar.

“You said the same thing thirty-seven years ago.”

Elena moved beside her.

“You knew she was alive?”

“I knew someone was protecting the original ledger. I did not know it was Anna.”

Anna looked at the open book.

“Margaret found me after Lydia’s accusation destroyed my mother’s employment and forced us from the Mercer estate. She was the only person who believed me.”

Evelyn studied her.

“You helped my mother create Blackthorn.”

“I was the reason she created it.”

The first innocent child.

Anna reached for Cassandra.

Aaron stopped her.

“Explain before touching anything.”

She nodded.

“Margaret built the first camera to prove Lydia had planted the necklace in my coat. The footage cleared my name, but Lydia’s father paid the family to hide it. Margaret learned that evidence alone was not enough. Someone needed the power to preserve it.”

“Blackthorn,” Evelyn said.

“The original Blackthorn was a protected archive. No blackmail. No secret armies. No manipulated footage. Only evidence that could not be bought.”

“Gabriel changed it.”

“Gabriel believed truth was useless unless it could control people. Lydia believed control was the only truth that mattered.”

Elena looked toward the shelves.

“And Margaret?”

“Margaret spent the rest of her life trying to repair what they turned it into.”

Evelyn held the photograph dated three months earlier.

“Where is she?”

Anna’s eyes moved toward Sophie.

“Safe.”

“That is not an answer.”

“It is the only answer Margaret allowed me to give before the audit.”

“The audit has started.”

“But it is not complete.”

Aaron opened the witness ledger to the final pages.

Hundreds of names had been recorded.

Some were marked PROTECTED.

Others were marked CONTROLLED.

A third group was marked UNRESOLVED.

The last section contained current dates.

Sophie Carter appeared on the newest line.

Evelyn’s hand tightened around the book.

“Why is my daughter’s name here?”

Anna looked genuinely surprised.

“I did not write that.”

Beneath Sophie’s name was a timestamp from before the wedding began.
