Chapter 7 - Everything He Denied

After the deputies placed Adrian in restraints, Evelyn helped Clara into a chair near the staircase.

Paramedics examined her while Marcus connected the hidden camera’s secure feed to the tablet.

Adrian stood between two deputies.

His confidence had returned slightly.

“You have a frightened woman, a damaged room, and an illegal recording,” he told Evelyn. “My attorneys will destroy this entire performance.”

“The recording was made inside Clara’s residence,” Evelyn replied. “She authorized it.”

“This is my house.”

Evelyn removed the original deed from her briefcase.

“No. Thomas Bennett purchased the villa and transferred it to Clara six weeks before the wedding. The deed you used to claim ownership was forged.”

Adrian looked at Clara.

“You knew?”

“For three months.”

The paramedic wrapped a bandage around Clara’s wrist.

Adrian’s eyes moved to the tablet.

“You edited the footage.”

“It is time-stamped and independently stored,” Marcus said. “The system created a verified digital signature whenever a file was uploaded. Any alteration would be immediately detectable.”

Evelyn began playing the recordings.

The first clip showed Adrian threatening a board member.

The second captured him ordering an accountant to change the dates on financial reports.

The third showed Cole Mercer standing beneath the archway.

Adrian’s own voice filled the hall.

“You were paid to make the brake failure look natural.”

Adrian stopped arguing.

One of the deputies turned toward him.

“That sounds like a confession.”

“It is taken out of context.”

The recording continued.

“If investigators reopen the Bennett case, your name cannot appear anywhere.”

Evelyn paused the video.

“Would you like more context?”

Adrian looked toward the open doors.

Dozens of lights flashed outside. News reporters had already gathered beyond the gates. Someone from the board had leaked information about his suspension.

“You planned this,” he said to Clara.

“No,” Clara replied. “I prepared for it.”

“You manipulated me into speaking.”

“You spoke because you believed I was powerless.”

He stepped toward her, but the deputies stopped him.

“This company will collapse without me.”

Marcus checked his phone.

“The chief financial officer has secured the accounts. Operations continue tomorrow morning.”

“My investors will leave.”

“Three major investors have already issued statements supporting the board’s decision,” Evelyn said.

Adrian’s breathing became uneven.

He had expected legal trouble. He had not expected the world to continue without him.

The lead deputy received a call, listened, and then approached Adrian.

“The district attorney has authorized your arrest on suspicion of financial fraud, coercion, evidence destruction, and conspiracy connected to Thomas Bennett’s death.”

Adrian turned pale.

“You cannot prove conspiracy.”

“Cole Mercer was arrested twenty minutes ago,” Evelyn said. “He began cooperating six minutes after learning you had recorded yourself blaming him.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

That final betrayal seemed to wound him more than the charges.

Cole had been paid for silence.

Adrian had assumed money created loyalty.

Instead, it had created a witness who knew exactly how disposable he was.

As the deputies escorted Adrian toward the door, he stopped beside Clara.

“You will regret this.”

Clara met his eyes.

“No, Adrian. Regret is what kept me here. I am done with it.”

He searched her expression for the frightened woman he had controlled.

She was gone.

The deputies led him outside.

Cameras flashed across the driveway as he entered the sheriff’s vehicle.

The front doors closed.

For the first time in six years, the villa was silent without Adrian controlling the silence.

Clara looked around the hall.

The broken glass still covered the floor.

“It does not feel like victory,” she whispered.

Evelyn sat beside her.

“Victory rarely arrives feeling clean.”

May you like

“What happens now?”

“Now we prove everything.”
