THE CALL WAS ALREADY RECORD / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7 - THE DRIVEWAY OF WITNESSES

The first police vehicle stopped outside the gates at 4:17 in the afternoon.

Security refused to open them.

Thomas arrived one minute later and played part of the recording through the gate’s intercom.

The security manager hesitated.

Then Rosa appeared from the garden side and manually released the entrance.

Thomas’s truck and the police vehicle moved up the long driveway together.

Inside the mansion, panic spread quickly.

Arthur ordered employees to remain in their rooms.

Miriam attempted to move documents from the winter room.

Julian took the baseball bat downstairs, intending to return it to a display case in the library.

Then Audrey forced open the old service door.

The painted wood tore the shoulder of her beige dress as she squeezed through. She entered a narrow servants’ corridor and followed it toward the back staircase.

She could hear shouting below.

Police were at the front entrance.

Arthur refused to let them enter without a warrant.

Thomas repeatedly demanded to see Audrey.

She reached the second floor.

Julian saw her from the foyer.

“How did you get out?”

Audrey ran toward the front doors.

Julian dropped the bat onto the stone floor and followed.

Arthur shouted for security to stop her.

No one moved.

Rosa stood beside the dining room entrance.

She looked at the other employees.

“Let her go,” she said.

Audrey reached the front doors and pulled them open.

Sunlight struck her face.

Thomas was halfway up the steps.

She tried to say his name.

Her strength failed before the word came.

He caught her and lowered her carefully onto the driveway.

The police entered through the open doors.

Julian followed Audrey outside, shouting that she had stolen documents and damaged the mansion.

One officer ordered him to stop.

Julian ignored the command and moved toward Thomas.

Two officers restrained him.

Arthur and Miriam emerged behind him.

Relatives who had arrived for the meeting with the attorney stood near the entrance, watching the family’s private crisis become public.

The bat had slid across the foyer and stopped on the driveway when the doors opened.

It lay untouched between the officers and the mansion.

Audrey leaned against her father.

“He wouldn’t let me leave,” she said.

Julian shouted that she was lying.

Thomas played the recording.

The driveway fell silent.

After Miriam whispered that events were not supposed to go this far, the officers separated everyone.

An ambulance crew examined Audrey while detectives secured the house.

Arthur called three attorneys.

Miriam requested medication.

Julian demanded that the recording be deleted.

None of it mattered.

Renee Lawson arrived while police were still waiting for the search warrant.

She approached Thomas near the ambulance.

“Her upload succeeded,” Renee said.

Audrey looked up.

“All of it?”

“Hundreds of images. I sent copies to state investigators this morning.”

Relief moved through Audrey so powerfully that she began to cry.

Not from fear.

From the knowledge that the truth existed somewhere beyond the mansion’s walls.

It could no longer be destroyed by taking her phone.

The search warrant was approved shortly after sunset.

Audrey told detectives how to open the hidden panel.

Miriam claimed the room contained private family records unrelated to the foundation.

The ledgers proved otherwise.

Detectives found the blue folder, the contracts and a list of payments to former employees. They also found a locked cabinet containing prepared statements about Audrey’s supposed mental-health crisis.

One document had been drafted two days before Audrey discovered the hidden compartment.

It described her as confused, unstable and obsessed with imaginary financial crimes.

The Whitmores had planned their defense before Audrey knew she needed one.

Investigators searched the security office next.

The mansion’s camera system contained footage of Audrey attempting to leave, the security vehicle blocking her path and Julian carrying her torn handbag inside.

Another camera showed Arthur instructing an employee to disable Audrey’s car.

The employee’s microphone had captured his words.

“Make sure she cannot drive away.”

At midnight, Arthur Whitmore was taken into custody for questioning.

Miriam followed.

Julian was arrested on suspicion of unlawful confinement, witness intimidation and obstruction.

Before an officer placed him in the police vehicle, Julian looked toward Audrey.

She sat in the open ambulance with a blanket around her shoulders.

“You destroyed everything,” he said.

Audrey met his eyes.

“No.”

She looked toward the mansion, where investigators moved behind the bright windows.

“I stopped protecting what you destroyed.”

The vehicle door closed.

For the first time in four years, Julian disappeared from her view without deciding when he would return.
