Chapter 6 - Tessa Presses Record

Inside the SUV, no one spoke for the first mile.

Tessa watched Natalie disappear behind them.

Her sister-in-law became a pale figure in the smoke, standing alone beside the cabin with one hand over her stomach.

Tessa felt sick.

“Turn around,” she whispered.

Brett kept driving.

“Brett, turn around.”

“She needs to learn that she cannot threaten me.”

“There’s a wildfire.”

“She has a phone.”

“She’s pregnant.”

Eleanor faced the windshield.

“Do not encourage her performance.”

Tessa looked at her mother.

“Performance?”

“She always creates a crisis when she does not get what she wants.”

“The evacuation order is real.”

“The cabin has fire protection.”

“That does not make it safe.”

Brett increased his speed.

Tessa reached for her phone. Her hands were shaking so badly that she almost dropped it.

She opened the camera and pressed record, holding the device low against her leg.

“Where are we going?” she asked.

“The hotel in Fairmont,” Eleanor replied.

“What about Natalie?”

“Emergency services will collect her,” Brett said.

“You don’t know that.”

“The dispatcher heard her.”

Tessa stared at the back of his seat.

“You knew the call was active?”

Brett looked at her through the mirror.

“Be quiet.”

“You knew someone was listening, and you still left?”

Eleanor turned around.

“Your brother is protecting his family’s future.”

“By abandoning his pregnant wife?”

“By refusing to be manipulated.”

Tessa’s phone continued recording.

Brett struck the steering wheel with his palm.

“She could have signed the papers. We would all have left together.”

Tessa felt cold despite the heat outside.

“So this was punishment.”

“No.”

“You locked the doors.”

“She was hysterical.”

“She was asking to evacuate.”

Eleanor’s voice sharpened.

“If Natalie had stayed at the cabin quietly, none of this would be happening.”

Tessa looked toward the orange sky.

“What did you expect to happen?”

Neither of them answered.

That silence frightened her more than their words.

At the Fairmont hotel, Brett parked in the underground garage. The air was clean there, protected from the drifting ash.

Before leaving the SUV, Tessa stopped the recording and sent it to a private email account.

Then she sent a second copy to Natalie.

The message did not deliver.

There was no service in Pine Hollow.

In the hotel lobby, televisions showed the wildfire spreading east. Emergency crews were evacuating several rural properties.

A map appeared on the screen.

The Pine Hollow cabin stood inside the red evacuation zone.

Tessa turned toward Brett.

“We have to tell them she is still there.”

Brett walked to the reception desk.

“I already called.”

Tessa knew he was lying.

She followed him.

“Show me.”

“Tessa, stop.”

“Show me the call.”

Eleanor gripped her daughter’s arm.

“Do not embarrass us in public.”

Tessa pulled away.

For the first time in her life, she did not apologize.

“I am calling the sheriff.”

Brett moved toward her, but several hotel guests were watching.

He lowered his voice.

“You will destroy this family.”

Tessa met his eyes.

“No. You already did.”

She called emergency services and gave them Natalie’s location.

The operator told her they already had an active rescue response.

Tessa nearly collapsed with relief.

Then the operator asked a question.

“Did Mr. Hale knowingly leave his pregnant wife without transportation during the evacuation?”

May you like

Tessa looked at Brett.

“Yes,” she said. “And I recorded what he said afterward.”
