Chapter 2 - The Journey Graham Encouraged
The London trip began as Graham’s idea.
Hale Meridian was preparing to acquire a European data-security firm. Graham told Audrey the company needed her experience to stabilize the negotiations.
“You’re the only person they trust,” he said over dinner. “Three weeks, perhaps four. I’ll take care of Micah.”
Audrey hesitated.
She had never been away from Micah for more than four nights. He was four years old now, but bedtime still belonged to them. They read two stories every evening, always ending with the book about the fox who followed the stars home.
Graham reached across the table.
“You have to trust me as his father.”
Audrey wanted to.
Before leaving, she arranged everything. She wrote Micah’s routine on the kitchen calendar. She prepared emergency contacts. She gave the nanny, Rosa, authority to call her at any time.
For the first week, the video calls appeared normal.
Micah smiled when he saw her, though Graham often ended the calls quickly.
“He’s tired.”
“He’s eating.”
“He’s playing.”
Those were Graham’s answers to every question.
During the second week, Rosa stopped appearing in the background.
Audrey asked where she was.
“Family emergency,” Graham replied.
Audrey called Rosa directly, but the number went to voicemail.
Then Micah missed two scheduled calls.
Graham blamed the time difference.
On the third missed call, Audrey contacted the household manager. Lorraine answered instead.
“You are distracting him,” she said. “Micah needs to learn that the world does not stop because he wants his mother.”
Audrey’s stomach tightened.
“Put my son on the phone.”
“He’s asleep.”
“It’s three in the afternoon in New York.”
Lorraine ended the call.
Audrey immediately booked a flight home, but Graham persuaded her to wait.
“The acquisition will fail if you leave now,” he warned. “Hundreds of employees could lose their jobs.”
He knew exactly which responsibility to use against her.
Audrey stayed three more days.
During those days, the London negotiations changed strangely. Documents arrived with missing pages. A Hale Meridian executive pressured her to sign an authorization transferring emergency voting rights to Graham.
Audrey refused.
That night, she called her grandfather’s longtime security director, Rafael Cole.
“Something is wrong,” she said.
Rafael had protected the Bennett family for twenty years. He did not dismiss instinct.
“I’ll review the mansion security and company traffic,” he said. “Quietly.”
By morning, he had found the first warning.
Someone inside Hale Meridian had attempted to access the private trust files controlling Audrey’s shares.
The request came from Graham’s office.
The second warning was worse.
Rosa had not left because of a family emergency.
She had been dismissed.
Rafael located her at her sister’s home in Queens. When Audrey called, Rosa began crying.
“Mrs. Hale, I tried to reach you. Mr. Hale took my phone before security walked me out.”
“Why were you dismissed?”
“Because I told him I would report what was happening to Micah.”
Audrey’s hands went cold.
“What was happening?”
Rosa struggled to answer.
“Mrs. Hale, please come home.”
Audrey left the London negotiations within the hour.
She did not inform Graham.
She did not inform Lorraine.

She told Rafael to prepare the emergency authority Arthur Bennett had established years ago.
Then she packed Micah’s gifts into her suitcase and boarded the first flight to New York.
