Chapter 10 - The Girl Who Drew Doors
Evelyn Grey was placed in a secure pediatric residence rather than the Vance estate.
Clarissa visited daily but never arrived unannounced. She brought art supplies, books, and food only after asking what Evelyn liked. The child distrusted gifts that carried expectations.
For the first week, they spoke mostly about drawings.
Evelyn drew houses without doors because Victor moved her frequently and told her doors were weaknesses. A house with no entrance could not be invaded. Clarissa asked how anyone inside could leave.
The child stared at the page for a long time and then drew a window.
Helena entered protective custody and gave investigators years of information about Victor's network. She admitted impersonating Evelyn Vance on several occasions, including the first meeting with Julian. But she insisted Clarissa's mother had anticipated the operation and manipulated it from within.
“Your mother knew Victor would recruit a husband to reach you,” Helena said. “She could not identify who. So she created the Crown Vault and left trails only you would recognize.”
“Why not warn me directly?”
“She tried. Arthur intercepted one letter because he thought it would frighten you. Julian intercepted the others.”
Arthur confirmed the first act. He had opened a letter addressed to sixteen-year-old Clarissa and burned it after reading claims that Victor was alive. At the time, therapists told him Evelyn's suspicions reflected trauma.
Clarissa did not forgive him quickly.
She also did not use his guilt to control him. Their relationship began again through difficult truth rather than dramatic reconciliation.
Cross Meridian stabilized under emergency leadership. Plants remained open. Employees received letters explaining the rescue and investigation. Clarissa refused the title of chief executive, choosing instead to chair a temporary recovery council.
Victims of Project Ash acquisitions came forward. A family in Ohio described forged safety reports that destroyed their manufacturing company. A widow in Georgia learned Cross Meridian had secretly funded the lawsuit that forced her to sell a logistics patent. Each story transformed abstract fraud into human damage.
Clarissa created a restitution fund using frozen executive shares, including Julian's.
From detention, Julian accused her of dismantling his legacy.
She replied through counsel, “A legacy that requires victims to remain silent is evidence.”
Chloe negotiated cooperation. She surrendered devices and account keys in exchange for prosecutors considering reduced charges. Her information revealed that someone inside Vance Capital approved Project Ash transfers under the initials A.V.
Suspicion immediately fell on Arthur Vance.
He denied involvement, but the initials matched, and several approvals originated from his office network.
Clarissa ordered an independent review despite pressure from family advisers to protect him.
The review found that Arthur's longtime executive assistant, Amelia Vale, had used delegated credentials for years. Amelia disappeared before investigators could question her.
Mrs. Martha recognized the name from Evelyn's notebook: A. VALE - WATCHER.
Amelia had worked for Arthur for twenty-three years.
“She scheduled my mother's final trip,” Clarissa said.
“And the clinic appointments,” the attorney added.
Security footage showed Amelia leaving Vance Capital the night of the gala carrying an archive case. Her car was later found at an airport, but she had not boarded a commercial flight.
Evelyn Grey provided the next clue.
While drawing the stone conservatory, she added a woman with short blond hair standing behind Victor. Clarissa showed her photographs of employees without suggesting names. Evelyn pointed to Amelia.
“She is the lady who brought the blue books,” the child said.
“What blue books?”
“The ones with people's secrets.”
“Where did she take them?”
Evelyn drew a lighthouse.
Helena identified it as an abandoned research station on an island owned through a Vance charitable trust. Evelyn Vance had funded marine studies there before her death.
Clarissa prepared a search team, but the child became agitated when she heard the island mentioned.
“There is a room under the light,” she whispered. “Victor said the door opens for me.”
Clarissa crouched beside her. “You do not have to go there.”
Evelyn shook her head. “The last key is in my song.”
“What song?”
The child hummed four notes.
Mrs. Martha began to cry.
It was the lullaby Evelyn Vance had written for Clarissa as a baby.
The melody was not merely a memory. Its intervals corresponded to numbers engraved around the silver device Helena had carried.
