Chapter 14 - Emily's Birthday Reclaimed

Emily's sixteenth birthday arrived on a Saturday.

Claire asked what kind of party she wanted.

Emily said, "Small."

"How small?"

"Ten people."

"Family?"

"Some."

Claire knew what the real question was.

"Vanessa?"

Emily hesitated.

"Invite her."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

Claire nodded.

No pressure.

No praise.

Just yes.

They held the party at Laurel Street.

The florist closed early and offered the shop's courtyard.

Blue and yellow balloons hung from the brick wall.

Emily laughed when she saw them.

"Seriously?"

Claire shrugged.

"Tradition."

Michael Reed made the cake.

This time Emily visited the bakery herself.

Michael placed the order form on the counter.

"Inscription?"

Emily thought.

Then smiled.

"Just my name."

"That's it?"

"Make it huge."

Michael laughed.

"How huge?"

"Obnoxious."

"I can work with obnoxious."

On the afternoon of the party, Vanessa arrived first.

Old habits.

But she did not take control.

She asked Claire where to put her gift.

Then she sat down.

She did not rearrange chairs.

She did not correct the food.

She did not tell anyone what to do.

Emily noticed all of it.

Maya arrived with three friends.

Evelyn came.

Michael delivered the cake himself.

When he placed it on the table, everyone laughed.

EMILY covered almost the entire top in enormous blue letters.

Emily clapped.

"Perfect."

Michael pointed at her.

"You said obnoxious."

Vanessa stood several feet away.

Her expression was difficult to read.

Emily walked toward her.

"You okay?"

Vanessa nodded.

"Yeah."

She looked at the cake.

"Your grandfather would have laughed."

Emily smiled.

"Probably."

Vanessa swallowed.

"I almost didn't come."

"Why?"

"I thought seeing this might feel like everyone was reminding me of what I did."

Emily looked around.

"Are they?"

"No."

"Then who is?"

Vanessa gave a small embarrassed smile.

"Me."

Emily understood.

Shame did not disappear because consequences ended.

But it was not Emily's job to carry Vanessa away from it.

She said, "Then maybe remember something else too."

"What?"

"You gave the letters back."

Vanessa's eyes filled.

Emily continued.

"You admitted what you did."

Vanessa looked at her.

"That doesn't undo it."

"No."

Emily smiled slightly.

"But if you're going to remember everything forever, at least remember all of it."

Vanessa laughed through tears.

"Your grandfather has completely ruined you."

"I know."

The party began.

Emily did not serve anyone.

That was a joke everyone made exactly once.

When Claire asked for help carrying cups, she immediately added, "Not because it's your birthday."

Emily laughed and helped.

Choice changed the meaning.

Halfway through the party, Evelyn pulled Emily aside.

"I have something for you."

Emily groaned.

"If this is another secret account, I don't want it."

Evelyn laughed.

"No money."

"Good."

She handed Emily a sealed envelope.

Emily stared.

"What is it with my family and envelopes?"

"Thomas liked stationery."

Emily opened it.

Inside was one final letter.

Dated nearly sixteen years earlier.

The day Emily was born.

Emmy,

You do not have a name yet while I write this because your mother and father are still arguing between Emily and Hannah. I am voting Emily even though nobody asked me.

Emily laughed loudly.

Claire turned from across the courtyard.

"What?"

Emily waved the letter.

"Grandpa rigged my name."

Claire groaned.

"I knew it."

Emily continued reading.

Thomas wrote about holding her for the first time.

About Ryan crying.

About Claire falling asleep mid-sentence.

About Vanessa arriving with too many balloons and immediately reorganizing the hospital room because the nurses were "doing it wrong."

Emily paused.

Vanessa covered her face.

"Oh no."

Everyone laughed.

Thomas's letter continued.

Vanessa will probably try to run your life too. She means well. Remind her that love is not management.

The courtyard erupted.

Even Vanessa laughed.

Emily looked at her aunt.

"Apparently he knew."

"He definitely knew."

Then Emily reached the final lines.

Whatever name your parents choose, I hope you grow into it so fully that nobody can make you feel like you have to apologize for taking up space.

If they choose Hannah, ignore the first paragraph.

Love,

Grandpa.

Emily pressed the letter to her chest.

Claire hugged her.

Vanessa stood nearby.

For a moment, Emily looked at her.

A year ago, Vanessa had tried to remove every reminder of Thomas's protection.

Now she stood beneath blue and yellow balloons while his words were read aloud.

And the world did not end.

Nobody had to be erased for someone else to remain.

That realization felt bigger than forgiveness.

When the candles were lit, Claire brought out the old silver cake server.

Emily's engraved name shone under the courtyard lights.

Michael whispered, "Do the honors."

Emily sliced the cake.

The first piece went to Claire.

The second to Maya.

The third to Evelyn.

Emily looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa raised both hands.

"No special treatment."

Emily smiled.

"Relax. You're fourth."

Vanessa laughed.

Emily handed her the plate.

For the first time, the gesture carried no debt.

No hidden obligation.

No lesson about humility.

Just cake.

Later, after the guests left, Emily stayed behind with Claire.

They sat on the steps outside Laurel Street.

The balloons moved gently in the evening air.

Claire asked, "Good birthday?"

Emily nodded.

"Much better."

"Low bar."

"Extremely."

They laughed.

Claire leaned against her shoulder.

"Sixteen."

"Don't sound devastated."

"I am devastated."

Emily smiled.

Then she looked up at the windows of Laurel Street.

Room 214 was dark.

The building no longer felt like an inheritance.

It felt like a story she had been allowed to enter.

Messy.

Complicated.

Not entirely happy.

But hers.

"Mom?"

"Yeah?"

"Do you think Grandpa knew all this would happen?"

"No."

"Not even a little?"

Claire smiled.

"I think he knew people. That's different."

Emily considered.

Thomas had not predicted every act.

He had recognized patterns.

Vanessa's need to control.

Claire's tendency to yield.

Emily's instinct to stay quiet.

Then he left each of them a warning in his own way.

The rest had been choice.

Claire stood.

"Ready?"

Emily looked at the giant EMILY still visible on the remaining cake.

"One minute."

She took a picture.

This time when Claire asked if she could post it, Emily said yes.

No dramatic caption.

No explanation.

Just the cake.

May you like

Her name.

Big enough to take up almost the whole frame.
