Chapter 8 - The Vault Beneath the Estate)

At eleven thirty the next morning, Adrian Cross called a press conference from Nathan's chair.
He announced that Vale Global had discovered extensive fraud committed through Blackthorn Advisory. He expressed sorrow, promised transparency and named the suspected architect.
Isabella Vale.
Her photograph appeared behind him while he described a predatory woman who had seduced a vulnerable chief executive, forged documents and attempted to steal six hundred million dollars. Adrian presented himself as the loyal partner who had uncovered her betrayal.
"He is burning the person closest to him," Rosa said from the safe apartment.
Nathan watched Adrian invite law enforcement to examine carefully selected records. "No. He is burning the bridge after crossing it."
The missing officer was found unconscious in a stairwell. He had followed a false message he believed came from Mara. Conrad remained missing. Security footage showed him leaving the hospital in a wheelchair pushed by a nurse who did not exist.
At eleven forty, a photograph arrived on Rosa's phone. Conrad sat bound inside a stone room. A digital clock behind him counted down from twenty minutes.
The message read: BRING THE RING TO THE ESTATE.
Mara began organizing a tactical response. Nathan studied the photograph. In the corner, barely visible, a wine label reflected in a glass cabinet. It bore the crest of the old Vale estate.
"Adrian wants the access sequence Isabella gave us," Nathan said.
"Then he cannot open his own vault," Rosa replied.
"It is not his vault."
Mara looked at the countdown. "We do not know how many armed people are there. We wait for the county team."
"Conrad has nineteen minutes."
"That clock may mean nothing."
Rosa picked up her coat. "It means something to him."
They drove north through heavy rain in Nathan's oldest car, a dented sedan registered to the tailor-shop trust. The estate appeared behind iron gates and winter-bare trees. Nathan had not seen it since his mother's funeral. The stone house looked smaller than memory and more watchful.
No guards stood at the gate. No vehicles waited on the drive.
"Too easy," Mara said.
"Adrian believes the house itself belongs to him," Nathan replied. "Men become careless inside things they have stolen."
The ring chip contained a map of underground service tunnels built during Prohibition. Nathan remembered one entrance beneath the ruined greenhouse. He, Rosa and Mara crossed the wet grounds while the county team approached from the front.
The tunnel smelled of soil and rust. It ended behind a wine rack in the cellar. Voices came through the wall.
Adrian stood in the central vault room with Conrad tied to a chair. Howard Voss waited beside a computer terminal, his face gray. Two armed guards watched the stairs.
"The transfer requires Eleanor's authorization," Voss said. "The old protocol has never been removed."
Adrian paced. "Isabella's ring carries the override."
"And after the transfer?"
"You retire."
"Like Lucia retired?"
Adrian stopped pacing. "Lucia made the mistake of believing evidence protected her. Evidence only has power when someone honest is permitted to see it."
Nathan activated his phone recorder.
Rosa pointed to a maintenance duct leading behind Conrad. She crawled inside before Mara could object. Nathan moved toward the electrical panel. On Mara's signal, he cut the lights.
The guards turned toward the stairs. Mara entered low, struck the first gun aside and ordered both men down. One obeyed. The other fired into darkness. The shot hit the computer monitor.
Rosa emerged behind Conrad and pulled his chair into the duct.
Adrian ran to the vault door. Nathan stepped into his path.
For twenty years they had stood side by side at negotiating tables, funerals and celebrations. Adrian had been the first person Nathan called when Elias died. He had held the umbrella at the grave.
Now he swung a metal flashlight at Nathan's head.
Nathan ducked. They struck the stone wall together. Adrian fought without elegance, driving a knee into Nathan's ribs and reaching for the ring in his pocket. Nathan slammed his forearm across Adrian's wrist.
"Was any of it real?" Nathan asked.
Adrian smiled through blood. "Your money was."
The emergency lights came on. Mara aimed her weapon at Adrian.
"Hands where I can see them."
Adrian released Nathan and raised his hands. "Detective, before you celebrate, look at the terminal."
The damaged screen flickered back to life. Despite the bullet, the transfer protocol was running. Six hundred million dollars had left Blackthorn seconds earlier, authorized by Nathan Vale's hardware signature.
Nathan still carried his token beneath his shirt.
Voss sank into a chair. "There are three copies."
The vault door began to close.

From the tunnel behind them came Rosa's scream.
Nathan turned in time to see Conrad fall forward and a figure with a silver cane pull Rosa into the darkness.
