Chapter 8 - The Stories Behind Closed Doors

Once the allegations became public, people began contacting me.

Some messages were cruel.

Ethan’s friends claimed I had planned everything to steal his career. Strangers accused me of using an ordinary marital argument to embarrass a successful man.

But other messages told different stories.

His former assistant described being trapped in his office while he shouted at her for twenty minutes.

A junior executive said Ethan had threatened to destroy his career after he questioned an expense report.

A former girlfriend wrote that Ethan had controlled her friendships and once taken her phone to prevent her from leaving an argument.

None of them had known about the others.

That was how Ethan maintained his image.

He separated every incident, made each person feel isolated, and convinced them that no one would believe them.

Beatrice attempted to defend him publicly.

She gave a statement claiming I was financially unstable and obsessed with controlling her son.

Mira responded by releasing only the information necessary to establish that the house and trust assets had always been separate property.

Then investigators discovered Beatrice had helped Ethan access my study.

The clock camera showed her photographing authorization forms and advising him which signatures would be easiest to copy.

She was not charged with the assault.

She was, however, questioned about the suspected fraud and named in the civil case seeking the return of diverted funds.

Her social circle disappeared quickly.

The people who once admired her invitations stopped answering calls.

The charitable committee she had chaired requested her resignation.

Her rented condominium had been furnished with items purchased using one of the disputed accounts. Several pieces were seized while ownership was determined.

When she left my estate, she carried only suitcases containing her personal belongings.

She paused at the front door.

“You’ve ruined this family,” she said.

I stood in the hallway with Naomi and a security officer.

“No,” I replied. “I stopped letting your family ruin me.”

After she left, I entered the guest suite.

Her perfume lingered in the curtains. The drawers were empty. A pale rectangle marked the wall where her portrait had hung.

I opened every window.

Cold air rushed through the room.

For years, I had believed freedom would feel dramatic.

Instead, it felt like fresh air entering a place that had been closed too long.
