Chapter 1 - Someone Was Coming

Caleb Hart lifted a piece of fried chicken from the silver platter and smiled as though the entire room belonged to him.
“What a good wife,” he said.
The words floated above the polished dining table, past the crystal glasses, the warm biscuits, and the vase of white gardenias. Morning sunlight poured through the tall windows of Hartwood Manor, turning the formal breakfast into a picture from a Southern lifestyle magazine.
Only Lillian’s face ruined the illusion.
She stood beside Caleb in a long cream dress, her hands calmly folded at her waist. A dark bruise surrounded her left eye. Her split lip was swollen, but she did not lower her head.
Across the table, Caleb’s mother, Evelyn, glanced at Lillian’s injuries and reached for her coffee.
“A wife should know when to stop talking,” Evelyn said coldly.
Caleb laughed.
Lillian slowly turned toward the open doorway behind them.
Footsteps sounded in the hall.
Two uniformed police officers entered the dining room. The older officer carried a thick folder. Behind them came Detective Nora Bell and a woman in a dark gray suit carrying a leather briefcase.
Caleb froze with the fried chicken halfway to his mouth.
“What is this?” he demanded.
Lillian stepped away from his chair.
“The breakfast you asked for,” she replied, “and the consequences you earned.”
Evelyn’s coffee cup struck its saucer.
The detective opened the folder. Inside were photographs, financial records, medical reports, and printed messages.
Caleb rose so quickly that his chair fell backward.
“You called the police over a family disagreement?”
“No,” Detective Bell said. “We came because of assault, unlawful confinement, financial fraud, witness intimidation, and the attempted theft of property belonging to your wife.”
Caleb stared at Lillian.
For the first time in eight years, there was fear in his eyes.
Lillian’s voice remained quiet.
“You were right, Caleb. Someone was coming.”
One officer stepped forward and instructed Caleb to place his hands behind his back.
Evelyn reached for her son, but the woman with the briefcase blocked her path.
“My name is Rebecca Shaw,” she said. “I represent Lillian Hart. I suggest you remain seated. Your own interview will begin shortly.”
As the handcuffs closed around Caleb’s wrists, he looked at the breakfast table as if it had betrayed him.

But the table had not betrayed him.
The woman he had underestimated had simply set it perfectly.
