Chapter 3 - The Camera in the Birdhouse

Charles claimed the shoe had been planted.
Ruth said Noah often wandered into the workshop.
Madison insisted Emily was using the investigation to punish the family for questioning her parenting.
Their answers became more aggressive as the evidence grew.
Detective Cole obtained permission to search the house and surrounding buildings.
Inside Charles’s workshop, officers found cleaning supplies, shredded paperwork, and a locked cabinet containing financial records from the Whitmore Family Foundation.
The records showed that Charles had borrowed heavily from the foundation to cover failed investments.
More than two million dollars was missing.
Noah’s trust was the only large source of money Charles could reach without public scrutiny.
But suspicion was not proof.
The missing shoe placed Noah in the workshop, not Charles in the shed.
The green paint could be explained.
And the concealed compartment had no usable fingerprints.
By morning, Charles’s lawyer was demanding an end to the search.
Then an officer found the birdhouse.
It stood near the back fence, facing the shed.
Noah had built it with Emily two months earlier. He had painted it bright blue and written his name across the roof.
A small opening had been cut beneath the wooden perch.
Inside was Noah’s toy camera.
The camera had been designed for children, but it recorded both sound and video. Its battery was nearly empty.
Detective Cole watched the footage alone first.
Then he called two officers into the room.
Finally, he drove to the hospital.
By then, Noah’s condition had improved. The doctors expected him to wake soon.
Emily had not slept. She sat with her head resting beside his hand.
When Detective Cole entered, she stood immediately.
“You found something.”
He held up the evidence bag.
“The camera was recording.”
Emily’s knees weakened.
“What did it see?”
Cole looked toward Noah.
“Your mother and sister led him to the shed.”
Emily closed her eyes.
The detective continued carefully.
“They told him they had a surprise for you. They asked him to hide inside the compartment while they prepared it.”
“Why would he listen?”
“They said they were making a secret movie.”
Emily pressed a hand over her mouth.
Noah loved making movies.
He trusted them.
“What happened after that?”
“The camera’s angle does not show the inside of the shed. But it recorded the voices.”
Ruth had told Noah to stay quiet.
Madison had promised they would return in one minute.
They closed the compartment and left.
Then another person entered the shed.
A man’s voice ordered them to move the chair in front of the concealed door.
The recording captured Ruth asking whether they were going too far.
The man replied that fear would make Noah’s story unreliable and that Emily would be blamed for losing control of him.
Emily gripped the railing of the bed.
“Charles.”
Cole did not answer immediately.
“The man stayed outside the camera’s view. We need a clear identification.”
“It was him.”
“I believe you. But belief and proof are different.”
Emily looked at Noah.
“He heard the voice.”
“If he remembers.”
Outside the room, Ruth and Madison waited in the family area. They did not know the camera had been found.
Detective Cole planned to question them separately.
Before he could leave, Charles arrived at the hospital carrying flowers.
He walked directly toward Noah’s room.
Nurse Elena blocked the doorway.
“You cannot enter.”
Charles smiled.
“I’m his grandfather.”
“You are not on the approved visitor list.”
His smile disappeared.
Emily stepped into the hallway.
“Why are you here?”
“To support the family.”
“The police found Noah’s camera.”
For the first time, Charles lost control.
It lasted only a second, but Emily saw it.
His eyes shifted toward Ruth.
Ruth looked down.
Madison turned away.
Charles recovered quickly.
“That is wonderful news. Perhaps it will explain how he locked himself inside.”
Detective Cole emerged behind Emily.
“We’ll be discussing that possibility at the station.”
Charles looked at the evidence bag in the detective’s hand.
Then he looked at Noah through the glass.
Something cold entered his expression.
Not concern.
Calculation.
Emily stepped between him and the window.
“You will never go near him again.”
Charles adjusted his jacket.
“You should be careful, Emily. Accusations can have consequences.”
Detective Cole moved closer.
“So can evidence.”
Charles left without another word.
Minutes later, Noah’s fingers moved beneath the blanket.
The monitor accelerated.
Emily rushed to his side.
His eyes opened.
Ruth and Madison entered before the nurse could stop them.
And the moment Noah saw them, he pointed.
“Monster.”
May you like
Then Detective Cole raised the camera.
And Noah whispered that there had been someone else in the shed.
