Chapter 14 - Project Daniel
Project Daniel was older than the Halcyon fraud scheme.
The first document had been created when Daniel was four years old. It included developmental assessments, school records, audio samples, and photographs taken without the family’s knowledge. Aaron’s name appeared as the project engineer. Dr. Voss appeared as clinical consultant. Martin Vale appeared as financial sponsor.
Maya read the first page twice.
The project described an adaptive evidence system designed for people who communicated differently: software that could recognize distress patterns, preserve testimony, and automatically send records when caregivers became unsafe.
Aaron had built the foundation for Daniel.
Vale had funded it because he saw another use.
A system capable of identifying coercion could also learn how to create it. By analyzing speech delays, sensory triggers, and dependency patterns, Vale’s team developed methods to make vulnerable people appear unstable while preserving plausible deniability.
Dr. Voss turned the research into behavioral reports. Halcyon used those reports to seize property.
Aaron discovered the abuse and shut the project down. Vale kept copies.
The archive contained dozens of profiles. Children. Elderly adults. Brain injury survivors. Non-speaking witnesses. Each file documented how institutions could be taught to distrust them.
Daniel’s file was different.
It included updates from someone inside his school.
Ms. Keene.
The speech therapist had changed his tablet settings, reported his messages to Helen, and helped create the aggression narrative. Payments from a Vale foundation appeared beside her name.
Police arrested her that afternoon.
Dr. Voss was arrested at the airport carrying false identification.
Sergeant Reeve agreed to cooperate after learning Vale had emptied the accounts promised to him. He revealed safe houses, shell companies, and the location of Bell’s abandoned car. Franklin survived with a minor gunshot wound.
The evidence release transformed the case. Families across three states came forward. Judges reopened guardianship orders. Properties were frozen. News organizations stopped calling Daniel a silent witness and began calling the scandal the Mercer Archive.
Maya disliked that name too. It made the evidence sound like a family possession when it belonged to everyone harmed.
At the preliminary hearing, Daniel testified through his tablet.
Rick’s lawyer tried to portray him as suggestible.
“Your sister told you what to say, didn’t she?”
Daniel typed: NO.
“You dislike Mr. Danner.”
YES.
“So you wanted him punished.”
Daniel paused.
Then the electronic voice filled the courtroom.
I WANTED HIM STOPPED. PUNISHMENT IS THE COURT’S JOB.
The judge allowed the recordings.
Rick was captured two weeks later at a bus terminal after a clerk recognized him. He was charged with murder, kidnapping, assault, fraud, and conspiracy. Helen pleaded guilty to child endangerment and attempted fraudulent transfer while continuing to testify against the larger network. Her sentencing was delayed until the federal case concluded.
Daniel chose not to visit her.
Maya became his legal guardian. They returned to the Mercer house after investigators released it. Together they repaired the broken kitchen cabinet and replaced the harsh ceiling lights. Daniel asked to keep the table.
Underneath, the letters D-A-D remained carved into the wood.
For a while, life became smaller in good ways.
School by remote program. Therapy with someone Daniel chose. Breakfast without fear. Doors that stayed unlocked because no one needed to escape.
The conflict that began beneath the kitchen table seemed finally to have an answer. Rick was in custody. Vale’s empire was collapsing. Aaron might be alive. Daniel’s voice had entered the public record where no one could erase it.
Then Canadian authorities found the private plane abandoned near a frozen lake.
There were signs of a struggle inside.
Blood on the rear seat matched Martin Vale.
Blood near the cockpit matched Warren Bell.
A third blood sample belonged to Aaron Mercer.
No bodies were found.
In the luggage compartment, investigators discovered a child’s communication tablet.
It contained only one saved message.
DANIEL IS NOT THE FIRST.
The guardianship hearing lasted less than an hour because Daniel’s preference was clear and Maya had already acted as his safe adult. Still, Maya asked the judge to include a supported-decision agreement rather than unlimited authority. Daniel would control education, healthcare choices when possible, media access, and personal records. Maya’s role would be assistance, not ownership.
The judge asked Daniel whether he understood.
He typed:
MAYA HELPS. MAYA DOES NOT BECOME MOM 2.

Outside the courthouse, Maya bought him a new set of colored tiles. Daniel kept the old ones too. Their edges were worn from years of use, but the serial numbers still opened doors.
