Chapter 9 - The Detective in the Ledger

No one spoke.
Ortiz stared at her own name.
Then she reached for her weapon.
Marcus reacted first.
He drew his pistol and aimed at her.
The two officers near the door raised theirs.
Priya stepped away from the console.
Daniel stood in front of me instinctively.
Ortiz looked around the room.
“If I were working for Halcyon, you would all be dead.”
Marcus kept his weapon steady.
“Put yours on the floor.”
“Not while two officers I do not know are behind me.”
“They came with you.”
“That does not mean I know them.”
The officers exchanged uneasy looks.
Ortiz slowly removed her pistol and placed it on the floor.
Then she kicked it toward Marcus.
“Now check the file details.”
Priya clicked Ortiz’s name.
A profile opened.
LENA MARIA ORTIZ
DESIGNATION: CONTINGENT INVESTIGATOR
SPONSOR: ISABELLE BEAUMONT
STATUS: UNAWARE
Ortiz stared at the screen.
“My mother knew Isabelle Beaumont,” she said.
I looked at her.
“You never mentioned that.”
“I didn’t know.”
Priya scrolled.
A scanned letter appeared.
It was written by my mother.
If this archive is opened, Lena Ortiz may be the only law enforcement officer with no financial connection to Halcyon. Her mother, Sofia, agreed to preserve evidence outside official systems. Lena must not be informed unless the succession protocol activates.
Ortiz read the letter twice.
“My mother died last year.”
“Did she leave files?” Marcus asked.
“Boxes. Storage unit. I never reviewed most of them.”
I looked at the date.
The letter had been written three weeks before my mother’s death.
Evelyn had told the truth about her investigation.
At least part of it.
Daniel clicked his own profile.
DESIGNATION: PRIMARY SUCCESSOR
SPONSOR: ARTHUR MERCER
STATUS: PROTECTED UNTIL ACTIVATION
A list of assets appeared beneath his name.
Banks.
Trusts.
Political foundations.
Offshore companies.
The combined value exceeded four hundred million dollars.
Daniel stepped away from the screen.
“That is not mine.”
“Legally, some of it may be,” Priya said.
“I don’t want it.”
“It may not care.”
We opened my profile.
DESIGNATION: SECONDARY SUCCESSOR
SPONSOR: RICHARD BEAUMONT
STATUS: ACTIVATED THROUGH NORTHBRIDGE ACQUISITION
There it was.
The purchase had triggered the protocol.
My father had structured the Northbridge assets so that whoever acquired them inherited control of dormant Halcyon entities.
He had expected me to find them.
Or he had expected someone like me to.
Nathan’s profile was different.
DESIGNATION: DISPLACED HEIR
SPONSOR: RICHARD BEAUMONT
STATUS: UNRESOLVED
Beneath it was a note.
SUCCESSION CONTEST POSSIBLE.
Daniel looked at me.
“Nathan believes you stole his inheritance.”
“I did not know it existed.”
“He may not care.”
We opened Silas’s profile.
Most of it was encrypted.
Only one line was visible.
DESIGNATION: EXECUTOR
STATUS: ACTIVE
Elena’s profile listed her as an observer.
Owen’s listed him as compromised.
Evelyn’s contained the words maternal proxy.
Ortiz asked, “What does executor mean?”
Priya searched the archive’s internal glossary.
The definition appeared.
EXECUTOR: INDIVIDUAL AUTHORIZED TO ENFORCE SUCCESSION, REMOVE INVALID HEIRS, AND PRESERVE CLIENT SECRECY.
Remove invalid heirs.
The phrase sat on the screen like a death sentence.
Daniel asked, “Can we copy everything?”
Priya began an encrypted duplication.
At thirty-two percent, the system stopped.
A red warning appeared.
REMOTE EXECUTOR CHALLENGE INITIATED.
A timer began counting down from sixty minutes.
“What happens at zero?” I asked.
Priya opened the alert details.
“Archive deletion and asset transfer.”
“To whom?”
“Executor.”
Silas.
Marcus said, “Disconnect the network.”
Priya pulled the physical cable.
The timer continued.
“It is internal,” she said. “Already triggered.”
“How do we stop it?”
She read the instructions.
“Two successors must confirm continuation.”
Daniel and I exchanged a look.
Two biometric stations activated.
We placed our hands on them.
The timer paused.
A question appeared.
DO YOU ACCEPT SUCCESSION RESPONSIBILITY?
YES OR NO.
Daniel immediately said, “No.”
The system displayed a warning.
DECLINING WILL TRANSFER ALL AUTHORITY TO THE EXECUTOR.
“So no gives Silas everything,” I said.
“And yes makes us part of Halcyon,” Daniel replied.
“Perhaps long enough to destroy it.”
“Or long enough to become it.”
The timer resumed.
Fifty-eight minutes.
Ortiz’s phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression changed.
“My mother’s storage unit is on fire.”
Marcus looked at the timer.
“Distraction.”
Ortiz grabbed her weapon.
“Or evidence being destroyed.”
She left with one officer.
Marcus ordered the other to remain.
At fifty-three minutes, Priya found an alternative command hidden in my mother’s letter.
CONTINGENT INVESTIGATOR MAY SUSPEND SUCCESSION WITH EXTERNAL KEY.
The external key was likely in Sofia Ortiz’s storage unit.
We split into two teams.
Marcus stayed with Daniel and the archive.
I went with Ortiz.
By the time we reached the storage facility, flames had engulfed the northern row.
Firefighters fought to contain the blaze.
Ortiz ran toward Unit 314.
A man stepped from behind a truck and fired.
The bullet struck the pavement beside her.
I pulled her down.
Police returned fire.
The shooter fled through the smoke.
Inside Unit 314, most of the boxes were already burning.
Ortiz kicked open a metal cabinet.
At the bottom sat a fireproof case.
She dragged it outside.
The lock required six digits.
Ortiz tried her mother’s birthday.
Wrong.
She tried her own.
Wrong.
I examined the case.
A faded sticker showed a sailboat named Isabelle.
I entered the date of my mother’s death.
The lock opened.
Inside was a small glass key, a cassette tape, and a sealed letter addressed to me.
The timer had twenty-one minutes remaining when we returned.
Priya inserted the glass key into the terminal.
The countdown stopped.
A new message appeared.
CONTINGENT SUSPENSION ACCEPTED.
Then the archive opened a video file automatically.
My mother appeared on screen.
She looked younger than I remembered her.
Tired.
Terrified.
Alive.
“Claire,” she said, looking directly into the camera, “if you are seeing this, then your father failed to destroy Halcyon.”
I moved closer.
“I need you to understand something before you trust anyone named in the ledger.”
She glanced off-camera.
Someone stood beside her.
“The executor is not Silas Vane.”
Behind us, the office door locked automatically.
The lights went out.
May you like
My mother continued speaking from the screen.
“Silas is only the face they taught you to fear.”
