Chapter 4 - the staff member carrying a trap

Daniel reached the security room in less than three minutes.
Helena Park, Halcyon Cove’s acting general manager, was already waiting.
She wore a white blazer over her resort uniform and held Vanessa’s written theft report.
“She named the child,” Helena said.
Daniel placed Mia’s hat on the evidence table.
“Tessa saw Vanessa put something beneath the ribbon.”
“Did the pool cameras record it?”
“The new cameras probably missed the angle.”
“What about the old network?”
Helena’s eyes narrowed.
“That system has been offline for years.”
“The visible cameras are offline.”
Daniel crossed to a locked cabinet at the rear of the room.
He entered a code Aaron Bennett had given him three years earlier.
The lock opened.
Inside was a compact control panel no current employee was supposed to know existed.
Small lights blinked along the edge.
Helena stared at them.
“You told me this network was disconnected.”
“I believed it was.”
“You believed?”
“Aaron installed backup cameras after money began disappearing from the Blue Horizon accounts. Only Mr. Wren, Aaron and I knew their locations.”
“Why did you know?”
“I helped Aaron access the service tunnels.”
Helena closed the security room door.
“Daniel, this could cost us our jobs.”
“If we let Richard Cole’s daughter frame an eight-year-old, we deserve to lose them.”
He activated the pool feed.
Six camera angles appeared.
One showed Claire standing beside the trash can.
Another showed Vanessa throwing the reservation card beneath the table.
The third showed Mia’s hat.
Daniel rewound the recording.
Vanessa waited until Claire and Mia moved to the replacement chairs. She spoke to Logan, removed her pendant and slipped it beneath the hat’s ribbon.
Logan clearly saw her.
He turned away.
The final camera captured Vanessa dropping the hat onto the deck when Claire returned for it.
Helena watched the footage twice.
“She knew exactly where the modern camera could not see her.”
“But she did not know about Aaron’s camera.”
Helena looked toward the screen.
“Why target the Bennetts?”
“Claire says Aaron never told her he worked here.”
“That does not answer the question.”
“No. It makes it worse.”
Daniel removed the diamond pendant from the hat and placed it in an evidence envelope.
Helena read the inscription on the back.
V.C.
“It is hers.”
“Which means her theft report is fraudulent.”
“She will say someone else planted it.”
“The video shows her doing it.”
“Her father will bury the video.”
“Then we show it before he arrives.”
Helena shook her head.
“Richard controls three board members, the public relations department and most of the legal team.”
“Elias Wren controls the resort.”
“Mr. Wren is in Singapore.”
Daniel checked the hidden system’s message archive.
A new notification flashed on the screen.
OWNER ACCESS ACTIVE.
“He is not in Singapore,” Daniel said.
Helena leaned closer.
Someone had accessed the cameras remotely twelve minutes earlier.
A message appeared beneath the notification.
PROTECT CLAIRE AND MIA. DO NOT ALERT RICHARD.
Helena read it in silence.
“Is that from Mr. Wren?”
“It uses his access code.”
Another message followed.
USE THE BLUE BOX.
Daniel opened a cabinet containing guest presentation packages.
The blue boxes were usually used for complimentary jewelry, spa certificates and luxury upgrades. He selected one and placed the diamond pendant inside.
Helena printed three still images from the hidden recording.
Daniel arranged them beneath the necklace.
“We cannot humiliate her for entertainment,” Helena said.
“This is not entertainment. Vanessa is preparing to accuse Mia in front of the pool. She has already asked the front desk to call security.”
“We should take her into an office.”
“She will refuse. Then Richard will arrive and erase everything.”
Helena considered the evidence.
“What will the box accomplish?”
“It gives her one final opportunity to tell the truth.”
“You expect her to confess?”
“No. I expect her reaction to prevent her from controlling the story.”
Daniel wrote five words on a card.
We saw what you did.
As he closed the lid, the security room telephone rang.
Helena answered.
Her expression changed immediately.
“Yes, Mr. Cole.”
Daniel could hear Richard’s voice through the receiver, though not the words.
Helena looked toward the pool monitors.
“No, sir. We have not questioned your daughter.”
A pause.
“I understand her position.”
Another pause.
“No, I have not called the police.”
Richard spoke for several seconds.
Helena’s face hardened.
“I cannot remove a child from the resort without evidence.”
Richard’s reply was loud enough for Daniel to hear one sentence.
“My daughter’s statement is the evidence.”
Helena ended the call without saying goodbye.
“He is twelve minutes away.”
Daniel picked up the blue box.
“I only need two.”
Outside the security room, Claire had returned to Mia.
She told her daughter that Daniel was checking the hat because something had become caught inside the ribbon.
Mia listened without interrupting.
“Did the woman put it there?” she asked.
Claire crouched beside her.
“We do not know everything yet.”
“She does not like me.”
“She does not know you.”
“She looked at me like the children at school did.”
Claire’s heart tightened.
Before treatment, Mia had been energetic and loud. During treatment, she became careful. She learned how quickly strangers could turn a medical bracelet, a hat or a tired expression into the only thing they saw.
“You are not responsible for the way cruel people look at you,” Claire said.
“Maybe we should leave.”
“No.”
Mia looked surprised.
Claire had imagined taking their bags, returning home and pretending the trip had never happened.
But leaving would teach Mia that people like Vanessa could decide where she belonged.
“We came here together,” Claire continued. “We will leave when we choose.”
Vanessa approached with Helena’s assistant manager and a security guard.
Her expression had become solemn for the benefit of the growing audience.
“I do not enjoy doing this,” she said.
Claire rose.
“Then stop.”
“My necklace is worth more than most people earn in a year.”
“That does not make your accusation true.”
“I saw your daughter touching it.”
Mia’s face went pale.
“I did not.”
Vanessa ignored her.
“I left it on the table. When they moved, it disappeared.”
“You were wearing it when you took our chairs,” Claire said.
Vanessa touched her bare throat as though only now remembering.
“I removed it because I was swimming.”
“You never entered the pool.”
Logan stood several feet behind her.
He looked at the deck.
Claire turned toward him.
“You saw what happened.”
Vanessa spoke before he could answer.
“He saw your daughter near my belongings.”
Mia gripped Claire’s hand.
“I did not take anything.”
Claire faced the assistant manager.
“My daughter will not be searched.”
“No one is suggesting that,” the manager said.
“I am,” Vanessa replied. “Check her bag, her pockets and that ridiculous hat.”
Claire stepped forward.
“You will not touch her.”
The nearby guests began recording again.
Vanessa noticed and raised her voice.
“An expensive piece of jewelry is missing. Innocent people do not refuse to cooperate.”
A woman near the pool muttered, “She is eight.”
Vanessa continued.
“Children steal. Especially when they are taught that their circumstances excuse everything.”
Claire felt Mia trembling.
She wanted to pull her away.
Instead, she looked Vanessa directly in the eyes.
“My daughter survived months of treatment without losing her kindness. You have spent ten minutes beside a pool and lost yours.”
A few guests applauded.
Vanessa’s face flushed.
Then Daniel appeared.
He carried the blue box in both hands.
His expression was pleasant enough to transform the entire confrontation.
“Ms. Cole,” he called.
Vanessa turned.
“Finally. Have you found my necklace?”
Daniel smiled.
“Ma’am, congratulations. You have been selected for a special guest surprise.”
The change in Vanessa was immediate.
She glanced at the guests filming her.
Her outrage vanished beneath the polished smile she used for her social media videos.
“A surprise?”
“From the resort.”
She adjusted her hair.
“I hope someone is recording.”
Everyone was.
Daniel offered her the box.
Vanessa took it without hesitation.
Claire watched Logan step backward.
He already knew the box contained nothing Vanessa wanted to see.
Vanessa lifted the lid.
May you like
Her smile disappeared.
And the scream began.
