Chapter 12 - THE WORD REPLACEMENT
The explosion destroyed the center of the ballroom but did not bring down the mansion.
No guests were killed. Several suffered minor injuries, and two officers were hospitalized. Celeste survived because Elena and Julian had removed her from the wheelchair moments earlier.
Isabella also survived.
She was arrested before dawn for evidence theft, obstruction and conspiracy connected to the attempted relocation of Celeste. Yet the most serious charges remained unproven.
Emilia was missing.
Three days later, Elena sat beside Celeste in a private hospital room.
Police guarded the door.
The complete locket lay on the bedside table. Cross had recovered it from the garden after the explosion.
Celeste looked weaker than before, but her mind was clear now that Isabella’s medication had left her system.
Elena placed the surviving birth record beside her.
“What did Emilia mean by replacement?”
Celeste looked at the window.
“I hoped you would never hear that word.”
“Everyone keeps protecting me with lies.”
“I protected myself with lies. You merely lived inside them.”
“Then tell me the truth.”
Celeste closed her eyes.
“Eliana became pregnant before she and Samuel planned to marry. My husband, Augustus, considered Samuel unsuitable. He wanted Eliana to marry into another powerful family.”
“Who?”
“The Ravenhursts.”
The name was familiar. Ravenhurst International controlled shipping ports, private hospitals and political networks across Europe.
Celeste continued.
“Augustus negotiated an engagement between Eliana and Damian Ravenhurst. Eliana refused. She said the children were Samuel’s.”
“Were they?”
“I believed so.”
“But the missing confession says otherwise.”
“We don’t know what it says.”
“You know something.”
Celeste’s hands trembled.
“During the pregnancy, Augustus forced Eliana to undergo private medical testing. He claimed it was for her health. After the twins were born, the doctor told him one child had a rare blood marker belonging to the Ravenhurst line.”
Elena stared.
“One twin had a different father?”
“Twins with different biological fathers are rare, but possible.”
“Which twin?”
“The records never identified her by name.”
“Then replacement meant…”
“Augustus intended to give one baby to Damian Ravenhurst and keep the other as the Valmont heir.”
Elena’s stomach turned.
“Children were pieces in an agreement.”
“To men like Augustus, bloodlines were contracts.”
“What did Isabella do?”
“She discovered the plan. She believed Eliana would marry Damian after all and control both fortunes.”
“So she killed her.”
“Yes.”
“Why leave Emilia alive?”
Celeste’s expression darkened.
“I’m no longer certain Isabella knew which child remained.”
Elena stood and paced toward the window.
“Mara escaped with one baby. The other disappeared. Isabella may not know which of us belongs to which father.”
“That is why she needed the final page.”
“Samuel knew.”
“Samuel witnessed Augustus and the doctor discussing the test.”
Elena thought of Samuel’s words in the cellar.
The final page would destroy both of you.
“Where is Samuel?”
“Cross moved him to a safe location.”
“Safe from Isabella or safe from me?”
The door opened.
Detective Cross entered.
“Elena, we found the adoption record connected to Rose Winter.”
“Where?”
“A private children’s home funded by the Valmont Foundation. A girl named Rose was admitted twenty-five years ago without a birth certificate.”
“Emilia.”
“Possibly. She was later adopted by a couple named Winter.”
“What happened to them?”
“They died in a house fire when Rose was twelve.”
Elena froze.
“Another fire.”
“Afterward, Rose disappeared from government records.”
“Because Isabella found her.”
“We believe Marcus did.”
Elena looked at Celeste.
“Isabella raised Emilia as a weapon.”
Cross placed a file on the table.
“There’s more. Mara contacted Rose Winter nine months ago.”
“Before she found Samuel.”
“Yes.”
“Then Mara knew who Emilia was.”
“She met her twice.”
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
“Their second meeting ended violently. Mara was hospitalized with a fractured wrist.”
Elena looked down at her mother’s last letter.
Mara had told her she fell on a staircase.
“Did Emilia hurt her?”
“We don’t know.”
Cross hesitated.
“Security footage from a nearby building shows Mara leaving the meeting alone. Emilia remained inside with another person.”
“Isabella?”
“No.”
He opened the file and showed Elena a blurred photograph.
