Chapter 9 - The Woman David Passed in Frankfurt)

David remembered her immediately.
A woman in the hotel lobby.
Late fifties.
Silver-blonde hair.
Dark green coat.
She had been staring at him.
At the time, he assumed she recognized him from business news.
Now he wondered.
His acquisition negotiations had dragged for eleven days.
Eleven days away from Maya.
Eleven days during which Eleanor took control of the apartment.
Eleven days during which Mark removed the case.
Coincidence became difficult to believe.
Hall ran Evelyn Mercer’s name.
Nothing current.
Death certificate from 1998.
Car accident.
Another dead person who might be alive.
David laughed bitterly.
“I’m developing trust issues with death certificates.”
Hall did not smile.
The key from Jonathan’s envelope belonged to a European safe-deposit system.
Serial number traced to a private bank in Frankfurt.
David called the executives he had met.
One remembered seeing the silver-haired woman.
“She attended one of the shareholder receptions.”
“Name?”
“I thought she was with your group.”
David’s pulse increased.
“She wasn’t.”
Security footage confirmed her presence.
Three days before David flew home, she entered the hotel.
She sat twenty feet from him.
Watched him drink coffee.
Then left.
The following day she returned.
Again.
On the third day she followed him into an elevator.
David watched the footage.
He remembered the ride.
She had asked:
“Do you have children?”
David had smiled politely.
“One on the way.”
“Boy or girl?”
“Boy.”
She had looked at him with a strange sadness.
“Then you will understand soon.”
The elevator stopped.
She walked away.
David had forgotten the exchange entirely.
Now it felt like a warning.
Maya called again that evening.
This time Richard allowed video.
She sat inside a cabin.
Liam slept against her.
David’s shoulders loosened when he saw them.
“You’re really okay?”
“I’m angry.”
“Good.”
“At you too.”
“Why me?”
“You left me with Eleanor.”
David winced.
“Fair.”
Maya looked toward someone off-screen.
“Richard says we can move soon.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
“Does he?”
“Yes.”
David lowered his voice.
“Do you trust him?”
Maya looked conflicted.
“With Liam?”
“Yes.”
“That’s different.”
“How?”
“He knows how to hold a newborn.”
David blinked.
“That’s your evidence?”
“No.”
Maya almost smiled.
“He changed Liam’s diaper without being asked.”
David stared.
“My father avoided diapers like they were explosive devices.”
Richard spoke off camera.
“I evolved.”
David’s chest tightened unexpectedly.
It would have been almost normal.
If his supposedly dead father had not abducted his wife to protect her from an organization connected to childhood identity experiments.
Maya became serious.
“He told me about Evelyn.”
David leaned forward.
“What?”
“He thinks she brought you to Frankfurt.”
“Why?”
“To get you away from me.”
David’s expression changed.
“What do you mean?”
“Richard thinks the business acquisition was manipulated.”
Hall started listening more closely.
David said, “That deal existed for months.”
“Exactly.”
Maya continued.
“The German company’s largest hidden creditor is controlled by a Luxembourg trust.”
Hall began searching.
“What trust?”
Maya looked off-screen.
Richard answered.
“Mercer International.”
David felt cold.
His biological family had engineered the transaction.
The delays.
The meetings.
His absence.
All while Maya gave birth.
“Why?”
Richard came into view.
Older than David remembered.
But unmistakably the man who had taught him how to ride a bicycle.
“I think Evelyn wanted Eleanor alone with the case.”
“Then why would Eleanor steal it?”
“She didn’t.”
David frowned.
“Security footage says otherwise.”
“She moved it.”
“For what?”
“Because someone contacted her.”
“Who?”
Richard looked directly at him.
“Your mother.”
David stared.
“Eleanor is my mother.”
“No.”
Richard shook his head.
“Your biological mother.”
Silence.
“Evelyn contacted Eleanor?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“The morning Liam was born.”
David’s stomach turned.
“Why?”
“She wanted an exchange.”
“What exchange?”
Richard’s expression darkened.
“The case for the baby.”
David stopped breathing.
“What?”
Maya tightened both arms around Liam.
May you like
Richard continued.
“Evelyn wanted your son.”
