Chapter 1 - The Accounts Are Frozen

Savannah Reed stood beneath the blazing tropical sun with one hand protecting her eight-month-pregnant belly and the other holding a black bank card above her head.

Her floral maternity swimsuit was soaked. Saltwater dripped from the ends of her hair onto the towel wrapped around her shoulders. A paramedic waited several feet away, but Savannah refused to move until everyone on the beach heard the truth.

Behind her, a police officer held Brianna back as she shouted and struggled to break free.

“She refused to give me the eighteen thousand dollars!” Brianna screamed. “That money was promised to me!”

Savannah’s twin sister looked almost like her from a distance. They had the same dark hair, the same hazel eyes, and the same unmistakable Reed family smile. But Brianna’s face was twisted with fury.

Their parents knelt in the sand between them.

Their mother, Patricia, reached toward Savannah with shaking hands.

“Savannah, stop this,” she pleaded. “Your sister deserves that money. She has a baby coming too.”

Savannah stared at the woman who had spent thirty-two years calling herself a devoted mother.

Around them, the luxury baby shower had fallen silent.

Minutes earlier, guests had been drinking sparkling water beneath colorful umbrellas and taking photographs beside a flower-covered sign welcoming Brianna’s unborn child. Now the music had stopped. Half-eaten fruit rested on abandoned tables. Expensive gifts lay scattered across the sand.

Savannah slowly turned the black card between her fingers.

“That fund was never yours,” she said. “And neither was the beach house.”

Her father, Douglas, lifted his head.

For the first time that afternoon, genuine fear appeared in his eyes.

“What did you do?” he whispered.

Savannah almost laughed.

Not because anything was funny, but because her father still believed she was the one who needed to answer questions.

The officer beside Brianna raised a guest’s phone. On the screen was a paused video showing the confrontation near the private pier.

“The entire incident was recorded,” he announced.

Brianna stopped struggling.

Patricia’s hand dropped into the sand.

Savannah placed the card inside her waterproof handbag.

“The accounts are frozen,” she said. “You’ll explain everything to the police.”

She turned toward the paramedics.

Behind her, Brianna began shouting that it was all a misunderstanding. Douglas demanded to call the family attorney. Patricia cried that Savannah was destroying the family.

Savannah did not look back.

They had been destroying her for years.

She had simply stopped paying for it.

Three hours earlier, Savannah had arrived at the private beach expecting a family celebration.

She had no idea her parents had planned to make her sign away nearly everything she owned.
