Chapter 13 - THE CABIN WITH TWO DOORS

Police accompanied Heather and Eric to the cabin.

Lieutenant Doyle objected to bringing them.

Heather insisted.

The property stood deep in the woods beside a narrow lake.

No nearby houses.

No cell signal.

Thomas Collins had purchased it through a shell company in 2008.

The first door opened with the key Melissa had provided.

Inside, the cabin looked untouched.

Dust covered the furniture.

A calendar still hung on the wall.

December 2009.

Eric walked through the living room slowly.

"I've never been here."

Heather believed him.

Police searched.

They found a second door behind a wardrobe.

Steel.

No visible handle.

The gold key from Avery's backpack fit a hidden slot.

214.

The lock clicked.

Behind the steel door was a room.

Eric stared inside.

Photographs covered the walls.

Not surveillance.

Family photographs.

Eric as a child.

Ryan as a baby.

Margaret laughing.

Thomas holding both sons beside a lake.

The room was not a criminal command center.

It was a father's archive.

On a desk sat dozens of letters.

Most were addressed to Eric and Ryan.

None had been sent.

Eric picked one up.

His hands shook.

ERIC, AGE 21.

He opened it.

Heather watched him read.

His face collapsed.

"What?"

Eric handed it to her.

The letter was dated five days before Thomas's supposed overseas trip.

Son,

If I leave suddenly, don't believe the reason they give you.

You are not responsible for what happens to Ryan.

I made choices before either of you were old enough to understand them.

Victor believes he can shape your future because he helped pay for it.

He is wrong.

Your success belongs to you.

Never let anyone convince you otherwise.

Heather stopped.

Eric turned away.

The final lines were harder.

If they ever tell you that protecting your family requires obeying them, remember this:

A cage is still a cage when the door is made of gold.

Eric sat down.

For years, CROWN had apparently prepared him to inherit something.

Thomas had known.

Thomas had fought it.

The next letter was addressed to Margaret.

It revealed more.

Thomas planned to cooperate with federal investigators in 2009.

But the investigation collapsed after the lead agent disappeared.

Thomas was held for nearly six months.

Not overseas.

Held.

By CROWN.

When released, he was told Ryan would be taken again if he spoke.

Margaret begged him to remain quiet until she found another path.

They spent years secretly documenting the network.

Then Thomas died.

Margaret continued alone.

Heather found another letter.

It was addressed to her.

She stared at the envelope.

Eric looked at her.

"Open it."

Heather did.

Dear Heather,

If you ever read this, I owe you an apology.

You entered our family without knowing you were entering a war.

Eric does not know what Victor intended for him.

Do not punish him for that.

But do not blindly trust him either.

Heather stopped.

Eric stared at the paper.

"Keep going."

She did.

CROWN survives by turning love into leverage.

They will threaten Olivia.

They will threaten you.

They will manufacture evidence, debts, affairs, crimes, anything required to isolate Eric until the organization becomes the only structure he believes can protect his family.

If that happens, remind him who he was before fear chose for him.

Heather's eyes filled.

Then she reached the last paragraph.

There is one person I never identified.

Victor answered to someone.

Margaret called that person the Architect.

I believe the Architect still controls succession.

The ledger can expose the money.

It cannot expose the Architect.

For that, you need the recording.

Heather looked around.

"What recording?"

Police searched again.

They found a cassette player beneath the desk.

Inside was one tape.

Thomas's voice filled the room.

"I met the Architect once."

Static.

"He was younger than Victor."

More static.

"He said CROWN was not about money."

Eric leaned closer.

"It was about continuity."

Thomas coughed.

"If Victor died, another would replace him. If that person died, another."

Heather's skin prickled.

Then Thomas said something strange.

"The Architect told me children are the only institutions that can survive forever."

The recording continued.

"He asked which of my sons I would sacrifice to protect the other."

Eric closed his eyes.

"I said neither."

A pause.

"He smiled."

Then Thomas whispered.

"That was when I understood he already owned someone inside my family."

The tape ended.

Eric and Heather looked at each other.

Ryan.

It had to mean Ryan.

Then an officer called from the back room.

"Lieutenant!"

Doyle entered.

A section of floor had been opened.

Inside was Margaret's sewing box.

Heather crouched beside it.

The antique wooden lid opened easily.

Inside were old needles.

Thread.

Buttons.

Then Heather pressed the hidden latch Melissa described.

The false bottom lifted.

The ledger was gone.

Only a note remained.

Eric recognized Ryan's handwriting.

May you like

I'M SORRY.

HE FOUND ME FIRST.
