Chapter 2 - The Evidence Beneath the Mattress

I began rebuilding Julian’s financial history one payment at a time.

Because I had once managed parts of our household accounting, I still had access to archived statements and old tax files.

Julian had changed the obvious passwords.

He had not removed the backups.

Northstar Development was only the beginning.

Money flowed from Julian’s company into several businesses controlled by people connected to Eleanor. Some payments were labeled consulting fees. Others appeared as equipment purchases for items that had never existed.

One company belonged to Eleanor’s housekeeper.

Another was registered to a cousin who had been dead for four years.

Julian had not merely hidden marital assets.

He and Eleanor had been moving company funds through false businesses.

I printed everything.

Bank records.

Invoices.

Emails.

Property documents.

I stored the copies in a large envelope beneath my mattress.

The law firm where I proofread documents was owned by a quiet attorney named Daniel Cho. One morning, he found me asleep at my desk beside a stack of contracts.

He placed a cup of tea beside me.

“You worked the hotel shift again, didn’t you?”

“I need the money.”

“You also need rest.”

I tried to smile.

He noticed the bank statement beneath my notebook.

“Northstar Development,” he read. “Why do I know that name?”

My heart tightened.

Daniel opened a filing cabinet and removed an old case summary. Northstar had once been mentioned in an investigation involving inflated software contracts, but the inquiry ended when a witness withdrew.

“Where did you get this?” he asked.

I told him everything.

The divorce.

The missing money.

The insurance cancellation.

The plan to challenge me for custody after the birth.

Daniel listened without interrupting.

When I finished, he closed the office door.

“You need legal representation.”

“I can’t afford it.”

“I didn’t ask whether you could.”

He agreed to represent me in exchange for my assistance on several financial cases once I recovered from childbirth.

For the first time in months, someone believed me without demanding proof of my character.

Together, we organized the evidence.

Daniel advised me not to confront Julian.

“If he knows what you have, he’ll destroy whatever remains.”

So I stayed silent.

Meanwhile, Julian’s company continued presenting him as a brilliant executive. Business magazines praised his leadership. Eleanor attended charity dinners and gave speeches about family values.

Then one afternoon, I received an email from an unknown address.

The message contained a short recording.

Eleanor’s voice came first.

“Once the baby is born, we make Vivian look unstable. Julian requests emergency custody, and she loses leverage.”

Julian answered, “What if she fights?”

“She has no money. Fighting requires money.”

My hands shook as I listened.

There was another sentence.

Julian said, “After she signs, we move the remaining funds overseas.”

I forwarded the recording to Daniel.

His reply arrived less than a minute later.

This changes everything.

The evidence did not remove my fear.

But it gave the fear a direction.

I stopped wondering whether Julian would try to take my child.

I began preparing for the day he did.
