Chapter 10 - The Church Where the Heir Would Be Born

The abandoned church stood on land once owned by Monroe Strategic Systems.
Clara arrived with Marcus and two security officers.
Julian’s car stopped behind them.
He climbed out before it fully halted.
“Where is my father?” he asked.
“Samuel is not your father.”
Julian stared at her.
Clara had no time to soften the truth.
“Richard was my biological father.”
Julian’s face emptied.
For a moment, the church, the baby and the armed threat disappeared beneath the horror of what that meant.
“No.”
“Evelyn knew.”
“No.”
“She knew before we married.”
Julian stepped away as if the ground had shifted.
Clara felt no satisfaction in his pain.
He had betrayed her, but this violation had been committed against both of them.
“Our marriage,” he whispered.
“Was engineered.”
He looked sick.
Clara opened the car door and removed the black case.
“We survive this first. Then we decide what remains.”
Inside the church, candles burned along the aisle.
Chloe lay near the altar on a mattress surrounded by medical equipment.
Her gown was soaked with sweat.
Labor had begun.
Daniel stood behind her holding a gun.
When Clara saw him clearly, grief struck with unexpected force.
He was alive.
Older in the face. Thinner. Scarred.
But alive.
“Daniel,” she said.
His eyes filled.
“Sister.”
The word almost broke her.
Julian entered behind Clara.
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You.”
Julian lowered his weapon.
“I thought you were dead.”
“So you took my wife.”
“I have no defense.”
“No, you don’t.”
Chloe cried out as another contraction seized her.
She gripped Daniel’s wrist.
“Stop talking and help me.”
Daniel moved toward her instinctively.
Their marriage, despite everything, existed in the way he supported her shoulders and whispered through the pain.
Clara placed the black case on a pew.
“Why did you threaten the baby?”
Daniel looked at Chloe.
“I didn’t.”
Chloe answered between breaths.
“The photograph was Adrian’s idea.”
“Adrian is not here.”
“No,” Daniel said. “But Evelyn is.”
A side door opened.
Evelyn entered with Dr. Crowe and four armed men.
Julian turned toward his mother.
“You knew Clara was my sister.”
Evelyn’s face remained cold.
“I knew there was a possibility.”
“You let us marry.”
“It protected both families.”
“You let me share a bed with her for ten years.”
“You were never supposed to conceive.”
Julian raised his gun.
Marcus stepped between them.
Evelyn did not flinch.
“You are angry because the truth is ugly,” she said. “But ugliness does not make my decision wrong.”
Clara looked at Dr. Crowe.
“You altered my fertility records.”
“I followed instructions.”
“You declared Samuel dead.”
“He would have been killed if the world knew he survived.”
“And Daniel?”
Crowe glanced at Evelyn.
“I identified another body.”
Daniel pointed his gun at the doctor.
“Whose body was in my coffin?”
Crowe remained silent.
Evelyn stepped toward the black case.
“Give me the ring, Clara.”
“Why?”
“Because Chloe’s child will be born within the hour. The system must be contained.”
“By you?”
“By the only person who has managed it for twelve years.”
“You created this disaster.”
“I kept it from spreading.”
Clara opened the second ledger.
Pages of transfers, coded names and authorization records filled it.
Near the back, she found signatures.
Richard Whitmore.
Evelyn Whitmore.
Adrian Vale.
Dr. Nathaniel Crowe.
And Samuel Monroe.
Clara looked toward Daniel.
“Samuel signed some of the program expansions.”
Daniel nodded.
“That’s why I warned you.”
Her father was not innocent.
He had concealed more than his survival.
Samuel had helped build the system even after learning how it was used.
Perhaps guilt drove him to create the trust.
Perhaps fear kept him from destroying it earlier.
The story contained no perfect protector.
Only damaged people making decisions with other lives.
Chloe screamed.
Her water broke.
Dr. Crowe moved toward her.
Daniel aimed the gun.
“Stay back.”
“I’m the only physician here.”
“You falsified my death.”
“But I can deliver your child.”
Chloe gripped Daniel’s hand.
“Let him.”
Daniel hesitated, then lowered the weapon slightly.
Crowe knelt beside her.
Julian stared at Evelyn.
“You said Chloe’s baby was mine.”
“I said the baby could restore our family.”
“You manipulated me.”
“I guided you.”
“You turned me into Richard.”
“No,” Evelyn said. “You did that yourself.”
The words struck harder because they were partly true.
A deep mechanical hum filled the church.
The black center of Samuel’s ring began to glow.
The trust had detected labor through Chloe’s stolen medical device.
A countdown appeared on the biometric unit inside the case.
Forty-eight minutes.
Evelyn stepped toward Clara.
“When the baby draws breath, the first verification begins. Give me the ring.”
Clara closed the case.
“No.”
One of Evelyn’s guards raised his weapon.
Daniel fired first.
Chaos erupted.
Marcus pulled Clara behind a stone column.
Julian tackled one guard.
Chloe screamed through another contraction while Dr. Crowe shielded her.
Evelyn seized the black case and ran toward the rear exit.
Clara chased her.
They emerged into the cemetery behind the church.
Rain had begun.
Evelyn reached a waiting car.
Clara caught the door before it closed.
They struggled over the case.
“You ruined my life,” Clara said.
Evelyn’s face twisted.
“I preserved it.”
“You preserved your name.”
“I preserved civilization from men like Richard and Adrian.”
“You used me.”
“I gave you an empire.”
“You stole my family.”
Evelyn struck Clara across the face.
Clara held on.
A gunshot sounded from the church.
Then a newborn’s cry rose through the rain.
May you like
The ring burned hot inside Clara’s pocket.
The first heir had been verified.
