Chapter 2 - The Deal Behind the Engagement

Caleb did not return Harper’s calls the next day.

By the second evening, she had sent him nine messages.

By the third, she stopped.

He finally appeared at her apartment four days later. He wore a navy suit and carried no flowers, no apology, and no sign that he had spent the previous days thinking about their future.

Instead, he placed a folder on her kitchen table.

Inside was a confidentiality agreement.

Harper looked up slowly.

“What is this?”

“My family’s attorney prepared it.”

“Why would your family’s attorney prepare anything about my pregnancy?”

Caleb sat across from her.

“Because we need to handle this responsibly.”

Harper pushed the folder away.

“We need to speak as two people who have been together for three years.”

“That is exactly why we need to be realistic.”

Caleb explained that Whitmore Development was considering acquiring several companies connected to his father’s investment firm. The deal could make Caleb a senior executive before he turned thirty-five.

Sarah Whitmore had also taken an interest in him.

Caleb insisted nothing had happened between them.

Not yet.

But Harper understood immediately.

His family did not simply want a business partnership.

They wanted a marriage.

“Your parents want you to leave me and marry her,” Harper said.

Caleb avoided her eyes.

“They believe Sarah and I would be well matched.”

“And what do you believe?”

He remained silent.

That silence answered everything.

Harper closed the folder.

“You told me your family’s expectations were destroying you.”

“I was younger then.”

“That was eight months ago.”

Caleb leaned forward.

“You don’t understand what is possible for me now.”

Harper laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“I understand perfectly. You have finally been offered something you value more than me.”

Caleb’s expression hardened.

“This is not about value. This is about timing.”

“It is about character.”

He stood abruptly.

“I came here to offer support.”

“Support?”

“My attorney can arrange medical expenses and a private settlement.”

Harper stared at him.

“You are talking about your child as though you damaged someone’s car.”

Caleb lowered his voice.

“I cannot publicly acknowledge this pregnancy.”

“Because Sarah might not marry you?”

“Because there is no proof the baby is mine.”

For several seconds, Harper could not speak.

Caleb had never questioned her loyalty before. He knew she had never betrayed him. He was not expressing genuine doubt.

He was creating an escape.

“You know this child is yours,” she said.

“I know what you have told me.”

Harper felt something inside her break, but it did not break the way Caleb expected.

It did not make her weaker.

It made her see him clearly.

She removed the key to his apartment from her keychain and placed it beside the folder.

“Leave.”

“Harper, think carefully.”

“I have.”

“If you make this public, my family will fight you.”

“I am not interested in your family.”

“You say that now.”

Harper opened the door.

Caleb stopped beside her.

“You cannot raise a child while running that company. Haven Bridge is already struggling.”

“We will survive.”

“You are being emotional.”

“And you are being a coward.”

Caleb’s eyes became cold.

“I am giving you one final opportunity to handle this privately.”

Harper pointed toward the hallway.

“Get out.”

He left without another word.

The following morning, Harper received his message.

Do not contact me again. The child is not my responsibility.

She saved a screenshot.

Then she sat at her kitchen table, placed both hands over her stomach, and allowed herself to cry.

When the tears finally stopped, Harper opened her laptop.

Haven Bridge had a major presentation in three hours.

She washed her face, changed into her orange blazer, and went to work.
