Chapter 4 - The Form in Margaret's Purse)

The examination began normally.
That was what made what followed so frightening.
Dr. Rachel Morgan entered at 11:04 with a tablet in one hand and an apology for running late.
She hugged Claire briefly.
They had known each other for four years.
Rachel had treated Claire through a miscarriage eighteen months before the current pregnancy.
She knew Claire cried when she was frightened.
She knew Claire asked too many questions when she felt uncertain.
She knew Claire hated needles and pretended she did not.
But she had never seen Daniel attend an appointment before that month.
"How are you feeling?" Rachel asked.
Claire opened her mouth.
Daniel answered.
"Not great."
Rachel looked at him.
Then back at Claire.
"I asked Claire."
Daniel smiled.
"Of course. Sorry."
Claire said, "Physically, mostly fine. Some back pain. The baby is active."
"And emotionally?"
Daniel shifted in his chair.
Claire saw him prepare.
"I'm worried."
Rachel nodded.
"About the pregnancy?"
"About things happening around me."
Margaret sighed softly.
Claire glanced toward her.
Rachel noticed.
"What things?"
Daniel leaned forward.
"This is what I called about."
Claire's hand tightened over the paper sheet covering the examination table.
Rachel raised one hand toward him.
"I need her to answer."
Daniel sat back.
Claire continued.
"Someone has accessed my patient portal."
Daniel laughed once.
Quietly.
Margaret said, "Claire."
Rachel's expression sharpened.
"Who?"
"I believe Daniel."
Daniel stood.
"There. That's what I've been trying to explain."
Rachel looked at him.
"Sit down."
"Doctor, for weeks she's been accusing me of monitoring her."
"Sit down."
Daniel obeyed.
Claire continued.
"Messages were sent pretending to be me. They say I think I'm delusional."
Margaret moved closer.
"She doesn't remember writing them."
Claire looked directly at Rachel.
"I remember every message I sent you."
"Pregnancy hormones can affect memory," Margaret said.
Rachel ignored her.
"Claire, do you feel unsafe at home?"
Daniel stood again.
"No."
Rachel turned.
"Mr. Bennett."
"You can't ask a loaded question like that when she's in this state."
Claire slid off the examination table.
Daniel moved immediately.
"Stay there."
Claire froze.
The command had come so naturally that nobody spoke for a second.
Rachel's eyes moved from Daniel to Claire.
"Why did you tell her to stay?"
"Because she's been dizzy."
"I haven't."
"You almost fell yesterday."
"I tripped over your shoes."
Daniel exhaled.
"Rachel, this is exactly the pattern."
The use of the doctor's first name irritated Claire.
Daniel spoke as though he and Rachel were colleagues trying to manage a difficult patient.
Margaret opened her handbag.
Claire saw a folded document inside.
Legal-size paper.
Blue tab.
A familiar header.
Bennett Home Medical Supply.
Claire stared.
Margaret noticed and closed the purse.
Rachel said, "I want ten minutes alone with Claire."
Daniel's smile vanished.
"That's unnecessary."
"It's routine."
"Not when the patient is unreliable."
Rachel slowly placed her tablet on the counter.
"Leave the room."
Daniel looked at Claire.
Not Rachel.
Claire knew that expression.
The warning came before the words.
"Tell her you want me here."
Claire said, "I want you outside."
Margaret stepped forward.
"Claire, think carefully."
Rachel turned toward her.
"Mrs. Bennett, you too."
Margaret's face changed.
"This family has been protecting her."
"Outside."
Daniel moved close to Claire.
Too close.
The examination table pressed behind her knees.
His voice dropped.
"You have no idea what you're doing."
Claire's fingertips slid backward along the wall panel.
She felt plastic.
A raised edge.
The emergency switch.
She pressed it.
A tiny light flashed.
Daniel saw.
His eyes changed.
He grabbed her wrist.
Rachel said, "Take your hand off her."
Daniel released Claire.
Then he leaned close enough that only Claire could hear him.
"You're going to cooperate."
Claire's heart hammered.
She looked toward the doorway.
No one entered.
The alert was silent.
Good.
Emily had seen it.
Daniel turned to Rachel.
"Doctor, I think you're witnessing an escalation. She just hit something on the wall for no reason."
Claire said, "I need more water."
Daniel looked at her.
Rachel moved toward the sink.
"I'll get some."
Claire said more loudly, "I need more water."
The door opened immediately.
Emily entered.
Daniel stared at her.
Emily held a paper cup.
"Mrs. Bennett, I need to check something privately."
Margaret stepped between them.
"Now is not a good time."
Emily looked at Rachel.
Rachel understood.
"Everyone except Claire, out."
Daniel's breathing changed.
Margaret opened her purse again.
"Doctor, before you make a mistake, you should see the documents her own company prepared."
She pulled out the transfer resolution.
Claire stared.
There was another page clipped behind it.
A medical certification form.
Patient unable to exercise sound financial judgment due to temporary psychiatric impairment.
The physician signature line was blank.
Dr. Rachel took the paper.
Her face went still.
"Why do you have this?"
Margaret answered immediately.
"Her attorneys requested it."
"My attorneys did not," Claire said.
Daniel stepped closer.
"Claire, stop."
Rachel looked at him.
"Did you bring this form for me to sign?"
Daniel gave a weary smile.
"We brought it in case your assessment supports what everyone around her has been seeing."
"Everyone?"
"Her family. People at work."
"Name one person at work," Claire said.
Daniel ignored her.
Rachel raised the document.
"This asks me to certify that Claire cannot manage her affairs."
"Temporarily."
"Based on what examination?"
"Today's."
Rachel stared at him.
"No examination has occurred."
Daniel's mask finally slipped.
"Then examine her."
The words came out hard.
Commanding.
Not concerned.
Claire saw Rachel hear the difference.
Daniel saw it too.
He turned toward Claire, anger breaking through the calm.
"This is what you wanted, isn't it?"
"What?"
"To make me look like the villain."
"You did that yourself."
Margaret grabbed Claire's forearm.
"Enough."
Claire jerked free.
"Don't touch me."
Margaret reached again.
Rachel moved between them.
Daniel stepped around the doctor.
"Claire, sit down."
"No."
"Sit down."
He seized her upper arm.
Claire twisted away.
His grip tightened.
Then he shoved her sideways.
The edge of the examination table disappeared from beneath her.
The camera in Claire's memory would always skip the next second.
A flash of white cabinet.
Rachel shouting.
Margaret's gasp.
Claire's hand striking the floor.
Pain tearing through one lower leg.
Then Daniel's voice.
Cold.
Furious.
"Shut up and let me explain for you."
Claire looked up at him.
Rachel stood frozen in shock.
Margaret immediately moved in front of the doctor.
May you like
"She's hallucinating again. Don't believe her."
And somewhere beyond the room, an emergency system quietly recorded the exact second their story became impossible.
