Chapter 11 - Eighteen Thousand Dollars

Claire followed her mother outside.

Guests turned as Marlene crossed the patio clutching Claire’s phone.

“Give it back,” Claire said.

Marlene stopped beside the swimming pool.

“You recorded us.”

“I recorded a conversation I was part of.”

“You were trying to humiliate this family.”

“No. I was trying to protect myself from it.”

Richard emerged from the house behind them.

“Everyone should leave,” he announced.

No one moved.

Beth and Grant appeared at the patio door. Samuel remained inside, partly hidden behind the curtains.

Marlene held the phone over the water.

“Sign the agreement, or this disappears.”

“The recording is already backed up.”

Marlene’s confidence faltered.

Claire took another step.

“So are the bank documents.”

“You have no idea what those documents mean.”

“Then explain them in front of everyone.”

Richard approached.

“This is not the place.”

“You chose the place when you invited foundation board members.”

Claire looked toward the guests.

“My parents closed an account my grandmother created for me. They took $18,000 without my permission and transferred the remaining money through an agreement I never signed.”

Whispers moved through the crowd.

Richard’s face hardened.

“She is under emotional strain.”

“I have the statements.”

“She has misunderstood them.”

Beth stepped forward.

“She has not.”

Grant grabbed her arm.

Beth pulled away.

“My signature was used to authorize the transfer. I was told I was signing a four-page temporary document. The final agreement has nine pages.”

Leonard Shaw moved toward the side gate.

Noah returned from chasing the sedan and blocked his path.

“Leaving already?” Noah asked.

Leonard turned back.

Richard pointed toward Samuel inside the house.

“That man has blackmailed us for years. The money was paid to protect all of you.”

“Protect us from what?” Claire asked.

“From the truth about Eleanor.”

Samuel walked onto the patio.

“The truth is that Eleanor kept records Richard failed to destroy.”

Several older guests recognized him.

One board member whispered his name.

Marlene tightened her grip on Claire’s phone.

“You were supposed to stay dead.”

Samuel smiled without warmth.

“And you were supposed to keep paying.”

Claire looked between them.

“So the $18,000 was hush money.”

“It was survival,” Marlene snapped.

“Paid with my maternity fund.”

“Your account existed because we allowed it to exist.”

“No. It existed because Grandma wanted me to have something you could not control.”

Marlene raised her free hand.

For a moment, Claire thought her mother might strike her.

Instead, Marlene reached for the purse hanging from Claire’s shoulder. The microphone inside it was still recording.

Claire stepped back.

Her heel reached the wet stone beside the pool.

Marlene seized the purse strap.

The sudden pull destroyed Claire’s balance.

She slipped.

Ethan reached her just before she fell.

Water splashed around them as he caught her arm and pulled her against him.

“What did you do to her?” he demanded.

Marlene’s control shattered.

“She refused to give us the $18,000!”

Richard stood behind her, cold and unmoved.

“Leave her,” he said. “Maybe she’ll finally learn.”

Noah raised his phone.

“Nobody move. The security cameras recorded everything.”

Marlene looked toward the roofline.

Richard looked toward the gate.

Claire gripped Ethan’s hand.

“Call Detective Norman.”

Then she looked directly at Beth.

“And tell him to open the fraud file too. The one with Beth’s signature on it.”

Beth’s smile disappeared.

The patio door opened.

Detective Norman stepped outside with two officers.

“Mrs. Mercer, do not delete anything.”

Grant moved toward the side path.

An officer blocked him.

Claire lifted the bank document on her phone.

A new notification appeared.

Scheduled transfer: $480,000.

Destination account: North Vale Consulting.

Authorization pending.

Claire tapped the transaction details.

The final approval had been requested from Beth’s device less than one minute earlier.

Everyone looked at Beth.

She shook her head.

“I did not do that.”

Grant’s hand moved toward his pocket.

Norman saw it.

“Keep your hands visible.”

Grant slowly raised them.

Beth stared at her husband.

“You used my phone.”

Grant said nothing.

Norman took the phone from him.

Then he read the authorization record.

His expression changed.

“The request was not sent from Mrs. Mercer’s phone.”

Claire looked at him.

“Then where did it come from?”

May you like

Norman turned the screen toward Ethan.

The device identifier matched the security panel inside Claire and Ethan’s house.
