Chapter 10 - The Document Under the Blanket

Everett followed the waiter through the west wing.
Police entered from the opposite corridor, forcing the man toward the nursery.
He locked the door behind him.
Everett heard a window open.
He struck the door with his shoulder.
Inside, the nursery was empty.
The curtains moved in the ocean wind.
A rope descended from the window toward the terrace below, but no one was climbing down it.
The waiter’s jacket lay on the floor.
Behind the door, a narrow section of wall stood open.
A hidden passage.
Everett entered with an officer.
The passage led downward through the center of Blackwater House. Dust covered the steps, but fresh shoe marks proved that someone had used it repeatedly.
They reached a stone chamber beneath the living room.
Inside were monitors connected to the estate’s security cameras.
Every bedroom, corridor, and entrance appeared on the screens.
A man had been watching them.
On the desk sat copies of Maren’s medical records, Noah’s birth registration, trust documents, and photographs of the family taken over several years.
Everett found a photograph of himself and Maren eating at a restaurant during their first month together.
Someone had been following them before Maren became pregnant.
One monitor showed the living room upstairs.
Celeste was speaking to the police.
Another showed Noah sleeping in his stroller beside Mrs. Bell.
A third showed Silas standing alone near the fireplace.
The hidden room door slammed behind Everett.
The lights went out.
An officer called for assistance.
Everett heard footsteps moving through a second passage.
When emergency lights activated, the desk had been disturbed.
The original trust schedule was gone.
The waiter had never intended to escape through the nursery. He had used the pursuit to reach the hidden room and remove the document.
Everett returned upstairs.
The party guests had been gathered away from the exits.
Maren stood beside Noah’s stroller, but her expression told Everett something was wrong.
“The blanket was moved,” she said.
Everett lifted it carefully.
Beneath Noah’s feet lay a clear plastic sleeve.
Inside was an amended trust document.
Gideon approached and immediately told Everett not to remove it.
Police restrained Celeste when she tried to reach the stroller.
The confrontation unfolded exactly as the unknown sender had planned.
Everett asked Maren who had locked her away.
Maren named Celeste.
Celeste claimed she had been protecting the trust.
Everett read the document and discovered Noah’s name had been removed.
Gideon brought out the sealed black file.
“Because Noah’s inheritance was already transferred,” he said.
“To whom?” Everett demanded.
Gideon looked across the room.
“To someone standing inside this room.”
Everett ordered the doors locked.
One guest began moving toward the terrace.
It was Silas.
Police blocked his path.
Silas raised his hands.
“I was not leaving.”
Gideon opened the sealed file.
“The transfer recipient is Silas Langford.”
A wave of shocked voices moved through the room.
Everett stared at his cousin.
Silas looked genuinely stunned.
“That is not possible.”
“Your identity, tax number, and biometric authorization appear in the record,” Gideon said.
“I never signed it.”
Celeste laughed bitterly.
“Now you understand.”
Everett turned toward her.
“You transferred the inheritance to Silas.”
“No.”
“The record says otherwise.”
“The record was meant to say otherwise.”
Silas looked at her.
“You used me.”
“I tried to keep you alive.”
Maren stepped between Everett and the stroller.
“Someone created Beneficiary 9 as a trap. Silas may be the name on the transfer, but who receives the money after him?”
Gideon turned to the next page.
His face became pale.
“Meridian Nine Holdings.”
Silas pointed toward the west corridor.
“That company belongs to the man in the waiter’s uniform.”
“Who is he?” Everett asked.
Celeste looked at the naval button found in the hidden room.
Then she looked at the locked terrace doors.
“He calls himself Elias Mercer,” she said. “But that is not his real name.”
A loud crack sounded above them.
One of the chandeliers went dark.
The lights flickered.

When they returned, the attorney’s sealed black file was gone.
So was Noah’s stroller.
