Chapter 5 - THE MEN IN THE SNOWBefore dawn, two intruders tore through the barn.
One escaped; the other, a clerk from Alden’s land office, left behind a drawing of the hearth and three words:
KEY WITH THE BOY.
Elias read the note. His hand rose again to his ear.
Clara wanted to ride to the sheriff immediately, but the mountain road had disappeared beneath fresh snow.
The telegraph line to town had been cut.
Whoever Alden had sent wanted the farm isolated.
They hid Silas’s papers and repaired an old warning bell above the cabin, replacing its rotted rope with braided horse tack.
On the third evening, Clara discovered a folded message inside a bag of flour delivered from town.
It was from Thomas.
The operation had been successful. He was recovering. But Alden had visited the physician and demanded the payment be returned unless Clara “completed the search.”
Thomas had refused to leave the hospital and had sent copies of Alden’s threats to the county sheriff.
At the bottom, he had written:
You married Elias to save me. Do not surrender him to keep me safe. I would rather lose the house than become the reason you helped a cruel man.
Clara pressed the letter to her chest.
Elias watched her from across the room. She handed it to him, and when he finished reading, he signed:
Your brother is brave.
“So are you,” she answered.
He shook his head.
I have only been careful.
Clara stepped closer.
Sometimes careful is what brave looks like after surviving.

That night, the pain in his right ear became unbearable.
