SHE TOLD ME TO GO HOME / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10 - the daughter hidden inside two families

Vanessa stared at the photograph.

“That’s impossible.”

Martin did not look at her.

“Rebecca had an affair with Adrian Cross while I was working with Thomas. Lydia was born during our marriage. I raised her as my daughter.”

“Did she know?” Margaret asked.

“Rebecca told her after Adrian died.”

“And Lydia believes the Cross fortune belongs to her.”

“She believes everything connected to Adrian belongs to her.”

Vanessa stood abruptly.

“My father inherited the Cross estate.”

“Your father inherited the public estate,” Martin said. “Adrian hid the rest through Hale Meridian’s network.”

Vanessa moved closer to the photograph.

The resemblance was visible now that she knew where to look. Lydia had Adrian’s narrow eyes and severe mouth.

“My father lost everything three years ago,” Vanessa said.

“Because Lydia found the hidden accounts.”

“She destroyed him?”

“She exposed debts he had concealed and purchased his loans through shell companies. Then she offered you help.”

Vanessa looked toward Margaret.

The confidence she had displayed at the Malibu dinner was gone. She appeared smaller, trapped by decisions she could no longer explain away.

“She knew exactly what I needed.”

“She knew because she created the crisis,” Martin said.

Ethan stood near the window, his back to everyone.

Margaret wanted to go to him, but she did not know whether he would accept comfort from her.

Daniel continued reviewing Martin’s notebook.

“If Lydia controls the trust, why stage the property transaction now?”

“Because Ethan’s birthday activates the final transfer,” Martin said. “But the trust requires him to appear independent from Margaret.”

“The condition that I no longer control Hale Meridian,” Margaret said.

“Yes.”

“So Lydia planned to install Ethan as chief executive, remove me, and use Vanessa to influence him.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with shame.

Ethan finally turned.

“You were going to marry me while reporting everything I did to Lydia.”

“At first, I only sent her information about your schedule.”

“At first.”

“She threatened me after I tried to stop.”

“When?”

“Six months ago.”

“That was before you used my mother’s card for the villa.”

“She said the spending had to continue so the relationship appeared real.”

Ethan laughed once, without humor.

“You needed luxury to make our relationship look real?”

Vanessa’s voice broke.

“I didn’t know how to tell you the truth.”

“So you kept lying.”

“Yes.”

The directness of the answer silenced him.

Margaret looked at Daniel.

“We need to move everyone out of this house.”

Martin shook his head.

“Lydia will expect that.”

“She may already be watching.”

“She is.”

Martin pointed toward the portrait above the fireplace.

Daniel’s investigator removed the frame and found a small camera embedded in the wall.

A red indicator light blinked.

Martin stepped in front of it.

“You wanted us together, Lydia. Now you have us.”

The indicator light went dark.

A phone began ringing somewhere inside the library.

They searched until Ethan found an old landline hidden behind a row of books.

He answered.

A woman’s voice spoke through the receiver.

“Happy early birthday, Ethan.”

He pressed the speaker button.

Margaret recognized the controlled tone from Vanessa’s description.

Lydia.

“You entered my home,” Margaret said.

“I entered a property funded by money my mother helped protect.”

“You stole documents.”

“I recovered evidence.”

“Where are you?”

“Close enough to see that Martin has chosen you again.”

Martin’s jaw tightened.

“Leave Ethan out of this.”

Lydia laughed softly.

“You put Ethan into this before he was born.”

“I tried to protect him.”

“You protected Margaret.”

Margaret looked at the camera.

“What do you want?”

“The transition that Thomas promised.”

“Ethan as chief executive.”

“Ethan as owner.”

“He does not want ownership obtained through fraud.”

“You have not asked him.”

Ethan stepped toward the phone.

“I’m answering now. I don’t want anything from you.”

“You will.”

“No.”

“When your mother’s board sees the original financial records, Hale Meridian will collapse. Its licenses will be investigated. Its investors will flee. Thousands of employees will learn their company was built using secret accounts and illegal payments.”

Margaret knew Lydia was right about the risk.

Even if Helen’s network had saved lives, the methods used could appear criminal. Bribes, false identities, hidden properties, and international transfers would destroy public trust.

Lydia continued.

“Ethan can prevent that. He accepts control. Margaret retires. The records remain private.”

“And you?” Ethan asked.

“I become trustee of the preservation network.”

“You mean you control the hidden money.”

“I restore what my father created.”

“Adrian Cross exploited the network.”

“He made it powerful.”

Margaret looked at Daniel, who was quietly tracing the call.

“How long do we have?” she asked.

“Until tomorrow night.”

“For what?”

“The Hale Meridian Independence Gala.”

Margaret knew the event. Hundreds of investors, employees, and journalists would attend at the company’s Los Angeles flagship hotel.

Lydia continued.

“Ethan will announce that Margaret is retiring and that he is accepting the role of chief executive. The announcement has already been sent to the press under embargo.”

Ethan’s face darkened.

“And if I refuse?”

“The full archive will be released to federal agencies and every major newspaper.”

The line went quiet for a moment.

Then Lydia added one final warning.

“And Vanessa will be identified as the person who authorized the forged transactions.”

Vanessa moved toward the phone.

“You promised I would be protected.”

“I promised you would have a home.”

“You used me.”

“I gave you the world you wanted.”

The line disconnected.

Daniel checked his laptop.

“The call bounced through several locations. We cannot trace it.”

Margaret looked at the clock.

They had less than twenty-four hours.

Ethan faced her.

“If I accept the position, we gain time.”

“No.”

“Thousands of employees could lose their jobs.”

“If you accept under Lydia’s conditions, she will control you.”

“What other choice do we have?”

Margaret looked at the boxes surrounding them.

“We stop reacting to the evidence she selects.”

Martin frowned.

“What are you suggesting?”

“We find the records Helen meant us to find.”

“The second deed is here.”

“Helen said Silver Briar contains the proof. Lydia expected us to find the deed and cassette. Those were not hidden from her. They were arranged for us.”

Daniel understood.

“You think there is another archive.”

Margaret looked toward Helen’s portrait.

In the painting, Helen held a silver locket.

The real locket remained inside the safe.

Margaret opened it.

Inside was not a photograph.

It contained a tiny folded map of the property.

A red mark appeared beneath the old greenhouse at the edge of the cliffs.

And beside it, Helen had written one sentence.

Thomas buried the truth where Martin would never look.
