CHAPTER 3: THE BIRTHDAY BANQUET AND THE RECORDING

Margaret Whitmore’s birthday banquet was held at the most luxurious Whitmore hotel in New York.

The ballroom was decorated with white flowers, golden candlelight, crystal glasses, silk tablecloths, and magnificent chandeliers. Only selected media were invited, but every guest in the room had enough influence to turn a rumor into reality with a single nod.

Margaret entered in a red gown.

Beautiful.

Powerful.

Untouchable.

She looked like the queen of an empire, and the banquet was her coronation.

Clara wore a dark, simple evening dress. She did not try to stand out. She only needed to be present.

Daniel stood beside her, but there was an invisible distance between them.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

Clara looked toward the stage.

“Will you believe me, Daniel?”

He paused.

“Why are you asking that?”

“Answer me.”

Daniel was silent for a few seconds.

“I want to believe you.”

Clara smiled faintly.

“Wanting is not enough.”

Before Daniel could reply, Margaret approached.

“It is time.”

She held Clara’s hand in front of the guests, looking like a loving mother.

“Come with me, Clara.”

On stage, the host introduced a tribute for Margaret. After polite applause, Margaret stepped forward to speak. She talked about family, gratitude, loyalty, and the sacrifices of a woman standing behind a great man’s success.

Everyone listened.

She was too good at turning herself into a symbol.

Then she called Clara up.

“My daughter-in-law, Clara, also has a few words to say today.”

Clara walked onto the stage as the guests applauded politely.

Margaret handed her the microphone, eyes deep and warning.

Clara held the microphone.

She looked toward the front row. Daniel was watching her. Vanessa had her arms crossed. Howard stood near the side of the room. Mia sat at a distant table, pretending to be a guest from the design industry.

Clara took a breath.

“Thank you all for coming tonight.”

Her voice was gentle.

“During the past three months, I have learned a great deal after becoming part of the Whitmore family.”

Margaret smiled with satisfaction.

Clara continued:

“I learned that not every brightly lit house is warm. Not every smile is kind. And not everyone who calls themselves family truly wants you safe.”

Margaret’s smile disappeared.

The room stirred slightly, but no one spoke.

Daniel stood.

“Clara…”

Margaret quickly took the microphone back and forced a smile.

“She is emotional because of the pregnancy. Clara, go down and rest.”

She grabbed Clara’s wrist tightly.

Clara looked down at that hand.

“Let go of me.”

Margaret leaned close, speaking only for Clara to hear:

“Do you want to destroy yourself in front of everyone?”

Clara looked at her.

“No. I want to end this.”

Margaret instantly changed her expression. She turned toward the guests, tears appearing with perfect timing.

“Everyone, I am sorry. My daughter-in-law has been under pressure recently. Perhaps she has misunderstood me. I only hope she will think about the baby and the dignity of this family.”

Vanessa stood up immediately.

“Mother has tolerated you too much!”

She moved toward the stage and pointed at Clara.

“Do you think being pregnant means you can do anything? Do you think this entire family has to kneel before you?”

Clara did not look at Vanessa.

She only looked at Margaret.

Margaret began to cry.

Beautiful tears.

Perfect tears.

Just enough to make the room lean toward her.

“Clara,” Margaret said with a trembling voice, “if I have done anything to hurt you, I apologize. But you cannot insult me in front of everyone like this. If you still respect me as your elder, kneel and apologize to me right here. I will forgive you.”

The entire ballroom held its breath.

Daniel walked onto the stage.

“Mother, don’t do this.”

Margaret turned to him with wounded eyes.

“Daniel, are you still defending your wife after everything she has done to me?”

Vanessa pulled his arm.

“Look at her! Mother is being humiliated at her own birthday banquet!”

Clara stood alone in the center of the stage.

This was exactly the moment Margaret had wanted.

A powerful mother-in-law, appearing wounded.

An ambitious daughter-in-law, appearing unstable.

A husband forced to choose.

Everything was perfect.

Until Margaret added one more sentence.

“Or is it because that baby in your stomach makes you think you are above your mother-in-law?”

Clara lifted her head.

Margaret stepped closer, her voice low. But the microphone had not fully turned off.

“You should pray that child remains safe, Clara. Because without it, you are nothing in this family.”

Something inside Clara turned cold.

Not from fear.

From certainty.

In that instant, every threat, every recording, every sleepless night, every moment she had wondered whether she was imagining things, all became one truth.

This woman did not only hate Clara.

She hated the baby because the baby stood in her way.

Clara raised her hand.

The sound was sharp and brief.

No one had time to stop it.

Margaret’s face turned to the side. One hand flew to her cheek, her eyes wide with disbelief.

The ballroom went dead silent.

Clara lowered her hand. Her fingers trembled slightly, but her eyes did not leave Margaret.

“That slap,” Clara said quietly, “was not for me. It was for the child you just cursed.”

Daniel stared at her, stunned.

Vanessa moved forward.

But Clara had already taken out her smartphone.

“And now,” she said, “everyone should hear what this respectable woman says when there are no cameras in front of her.”

The LED screen lit up.

The recording played through the ballroom.

“As long as that girl loses the baby, all the family assets will come back to me.”

Everything after that unfolded like Margaret’s nightmare.

No one defended her.

No one comforted her.

No one dared to call Clara disrespectful.

No one looked at Margaret like a victim anymore.

Daniel stood frozen, his eyes red not with anger at Clara, but with the collapse of the world he had believed in.

“Mother…” he said, his voice breaking.

Margaret stepped back.

“No. It is fake. It is edited. She set me up.”

Howard walked onto the stage.

“The original recording has already been submitted to investigators along with related financial documents. Tonight, we played only a short section to prevent you from continuing to slander Mrs. Clara in public.”

Margaret turned to him.

“You betrayed me?”

Howard answered calmly:

“I am loyal to the truth and to Mr. Richard’s final wishes.”

The name Richard struck Margaret like a blade.

She looked around the ballroom. Guests who had once flattered her now avoided her gaze. People who had wanted photos with her now quietly put down their glasses.

Vanessa trembled.

“Mother… what does that recording mean?”

Margaret turned to her daughter, losing control for the first time.

“Do not believe it! Clara created this. She wants to steal this family!”

Clara looked at Vanessa.

“I do not need to steal something that was never mine.”

Daniel turned to Clara, his voice hoarse.

“How long have you known?”

Clara looked at him.

There was no rage in her eyes now, only deep exhaustion.

“Long enough to wait for you to see it yourself. But you did not look.”

Daniel looked as if the words had destroyed him.

He wanted to step closer.

Clara moved back.

“Don’t.”

One word stopped him.

Hotel security entered under Howard’s signal. They did not drag Margaret away. They simply stood beside her, polite but firm.

Howard said:

“Mrs. Margaret, you need to come with us and speak with legal representatives.”

Margaret laughed, but the sound shook.

“You think you can destroy me with one recording? I am Margaret Whitmore.”

Clara looked at her.

“No. You destroyed yourself long ago. Tonight, everyone finally saw it.”

Margaret stared at Clara with hatred.

“You will never belong to this family.”

Clara was silent for a moment.

Then she answered:

“Good. Because I no longer want to belong to a family that trades conscience for acceptance.”

Margaret was escorted out of the ballroom under the gaze of every guest.

No applause.

May you like

No shouting.

Only the heavy silence of an empire watching its false queen fall.
