Chapter 11 - Voss's Perfect Family

Voss held Emma against his chest while armed men flooded the archive.

He looked almost exactly as he had in Noah's treatment photographs: silver hair, precise posture, gentle physician's eyes. Only the absence of warmth revealed the man beneath the reputation.

"Families are inefficient custodians of important work," he said. "Too much guilt. Too much memory."

Richard moved toward him. Grace pressed the pistol harder against Richard's back.

"Stay where you are," Voss warned. "The needle contains the same agent used in Emma's crash. A full dose will leave her conscious and permanently immobile."

Emma stopped struggling.

Celeste emerged from the server aisle carrying a tablet. She was bruised from the transport escape but smiling again. Voss looked at her with contempt.

"You failed in the ICU."

"I brought you the family," Celeste replied.

Her true plan became clear. She had not escaped to help Voss. She had used both sides to reach the archive. The tablet contained a contract transferring Blue Meridian assets to an offshore corporation under her control if she obtained Emma's biometric authorization.

"You still think this is about money," Noah said.

"Money is the only memory no one questions," Celeste answered.

Voss ordered his men to restrain everyone. Brooks had been wounded in the corridor, but she remained conscious behind a server rack. Emma caught her eye and saw her hand inch toward the building's fire suppression control.

Richard spoke to Voss. "You cannot operate the archive without Grace."

"I no longer need her willing," Voss said. "We mapped her neural responses for thirty years. She is the most complete identity in the system."

Grace's face changed. For all her claims of control, she had not known Voss could simulate her.

He activated a screen. A digital version of Grace appeared, speaking with her voice.

"Hello, Simon," it said.

The real Grace fired at the monitor. Voss's men returned fire. Richard pulled her down. The needle slipped from Emma's neck.

Brooks triggered the suppression system.

Instead of water, electromagnetic shutters slammed through the room, isolating server sections. Richard had designed the archive to survive fire and seizure. Lights failed. In the darkness, Emma drove her elbow into Voss and crawled beneath the console.

Noah fought Celeste for the tablet. Evelyn struck one guard with a metal emergency handle. Grace shot another in the leg. Richard reached the central console and entered a code.

The system asked for Patient Zero.

Grace placed her palm on the reader.

Emma placed hers beside it.

Deletion began.

Voss shouted that they were destroying the only defense against fabricated identities. Richard shouted for Emma to stop at twenty percent. Grace insisted they continue.

At thirty-two percent, screens across the room filled with names. Some belonged to dead patients. Others belonged to judges, senators, journalists, and children. Emma saw her own name and Noah's. She saw Evelyn's.

Then she saw Celeste Vale.

Her profile had been created twenty-four years earlier, when Celeste was eight.

Celeste froze.

A childhood video played. A little girl sat in a clinic room repeating sentences after Dr. Voss. Her original name was not Celeste Vale. It was Claire Voss.

"You are my daughter," Voss said.

Celeste stared at him. "No."

"You were my first successful replacement. Your mother tried to take you away. I gave you a safer history."

Celeste's confidence collapsed. Every loyalty, every resentment, every ambition now stood under suspicion.

Voss reached for her. She stabbed the syringe into his arm.

He staggered.

"What did you give me?" he asked.

"A full dose."

Voss fell, eyes open, body locked.

The deletion reached sixty percent.

Richard pulled the emergency breaker. The process stopped.

Grace aimed her pistol at him. "Why?"

"Because one file cannot be deleted," Richard said. "If it is, every person tied to LATTICE becomes legally indefensible. Their real records disappear with the false ones."

Emma saw a protected directory on the console.

Its label was HART SUCCESSION.

Inside were three files: Grace, Noah, and Emma.

A fourth file appeared beneath them.

Its name was Evelyn Hart.\n\nDuring the blackout, Evelyn crawled toward Emma by following the sound of her breathing. She could not see the guard who reached for her, but she remembered a self-defense movement Noah had taught her after Richard's death. She drove the emergency handle upward and heard the man fall. Later she stared at her bruised hands in disbelief. The performance in the ICU had required her to appear cruel. The archive required something harder: accepting that love could be violent without becoming the violence it opposed.
