Chapter 8 - The Hospital That Burned Twice

St. Arden had burned once in the official record.

By midnight, it would burn again.

The abandoned hospital stood beyond the county line behind rusted gates and a forest of dead pines. The main wing was a blackened shell, but satellite images showed one service building still intact. Thomas had chosen a place saturated with old crimes and poor cellular coverage.

Detective Voss refused to let Claire go alone. They built a plan around a concealed tracker in the ledger case and a tactical team approaching through the rear access road. Eleanor agreed to act as though she possessed the master ledger. Daniel, not yet a sworn officer, was ordered to remain at command.

He ignored the order.

Claire, Eleanor, and Daniel entered through the maternity wing shortly before midnight. Rain dripped through broken ceilings. Faded murals of clouds and stars peeled from the walls. Claire imagined Evelyn walking these corridors decades earlier, grieving one infant and accepting another through a bargain that poisoned every life afterward.

A lantern glowed inside the old chapel.

Evelyn sat tied near the altar. Thomas stood behind her with a pistol. He had once carried Daniel on his shoulders and taught Claire to ride a bicycle. Memory made his face more terrible, not less.

"You came," he said.

"Let her go," Claire answered.

Thomas laughed. "After everything she has done, you still protect her. Lillian trained you well."

Eleanor held up the case. "The ledgers first. Evelyn second."

Thomas studied her. "My daughter by blood."

Eleanor's face hardened. "You are not my father."

"Biology has become very flexible in this family."

He ordered Daniel to untie Evelyn while Claire placed the case at the center aisle. As Daniel moved, Claire saw a red laser dot tremble across Eleanor's coat. A second shooter waited in the balcony.

"Nora?" Claire asked.

Thomas smiled. "Nora is in custody. Victor has many loyal children."

The exchange collapsed when Evelyn kicked backward, striking Thomas's knee. Daniel pulled her toward the pews. A shot exploded from above. Eleanor dove behind the altar. Claire grabbed the ledger case and ran down a side corridor as Thomas fired after her.

She wanted him to follow.

The tracker would guide Voss, but only if the signal escaped the thick walls. Claire raced into the neonatal ward where rusted bassinets stood beneath sheets. Thomas caught her near an old nurses' station.

He pressed the pistol against her shoulder.

"Where is the master ledger?"

"Lillian never gave it to me."

"She gave you everything."

"She gave me a chance to become someone unlike you."

His face twisted. "You think inheritance makes you righteous? Your grandmother used every one of you. She hid Eleanor, raised you as bait, and kept Victor alive because she needed his clients to fear exposure."

"Then why did you serve him?"

"Because men like Victor understand survival."

Thomas reached for the case. Claire released it suddenly, then struck him with the metal edge. The pistol fired into the ceiling. She ran.

Alarms began shrieking. Not police alarms. Fire alarms.

Smoke poured from the maternity wing.

Someone had ignited accelerants throughout the building.

Voss's team entered from the rear as flames climbed the chapel walls. Daniel carried Evelyn toward an exit. Eleanor appeared through smoke, coughing, with a wounded tactical officer leaning on her shoulder.

Thomas vanished.

Claire returned toward the nurses' station because the ledger case had fallen there. She found it open and empty.

On the floor lay a fresh photograph.

It showed Claire asleep in her own bedroom the previous night.

On the back, written in black ink, were the words: VICTOR DOES NOT NEED THE LEDGER. HE NEEDS YOU TO REMEMBER WHERE YOU HID IT.

The ceiling groaned.

A hand seized Claire from behind and pulled her through a doorway seconds before burning plaster collapsed.

It was Evelyn.

They escaped through a laundry tunnel as St. Arden burned around them. Outside, Claire watched firefighters fight flames that seemed determined to erase the past a second time.

Voss approached with grim news. Thomas had escaped through an underground ambulance passage.

Eleanor opened her coat. One of the recovered ledgers was still tucked inside.

But its final page had changed.

A new message had been written there during the chaos.

Claire already found the master ledger when she was nine years old. Ask her what happened in the blue room.

As the hospital burned, Evelyn confessed one detail through coughing breaths. Thomas had not merely agreed to the infant switch; he had suggested using Claire's existence to keep Victor financially dependent on the Bennett trust. Evelyn had spent years telling herself she was also a victim of the men around her. In the tunnel, she admitted that victimhood had become her favorite excuse for the harm she later chose. Claire did not respond. The fire behind them sounded like an enormous animal. Some truths were too late to rescue a relationship, but not too late to stop a lie from becoming inheritance.
