Chapter 7 - Lauren’s Conditions

Patricia and Melissa left before sunset.
Melissa carried two suitcases to a waiting rideshare. Patricia walked out without saying goodbye.
The silence afterward should have felt peaceful.
Instead, Lauren stood in the kitchen looking lost.
Ethan placed Noah in his crib after speaking with the pediatric clinic. His fever had begun to lower, and the nurse assured them that they were handling it correctly.
When Ethan returned downstairs, Lauren was wiping the already clean counter.
“Stop,” he said gently.
“I need to finish.”
“No, you don’t.”
She kept wiping.
Ethan placed his hand over the cloth.
Lauren finally looked at him.
“I should have told you sooner.”
“You tried.”
“I didn’t tell you everything.”
“You shouldn’t have needed a perfect speech for me to notice.”
Tears filled her eyes.
Ethan expected her to fall into his arms, but she stepped back.
“I’m glad you defended me today,” she said. “But today doesn’t erase all the times you asked me to keep the peace.”
The words hurt because they were true.
Whenever Patricia criticized Lauren, Ethan had called it a misunderstanding. Whenever Melissa ignored boundaries, Ethan had asked Lauren to be patient.
He had believed avoiding conflict was the same as protecting his family.
It was not.
“What do you need from me?” he asked.
Lauren took a slow breath.
“I need this to be my home legally, not just when everyone is behaving.”
Ethan nodded.
“I need your mother to stop entering with her key.”
“I’ll change the locks.”
“And I need you to understand that an apology without consequences will not be enough.”
“I understand.”
Lauren searched his face.
“No, Ethan. You’re beginning to understand.”
He accepted the correction.

That night, they slept beside Noah’s crib.
Ethan remained awake for hours, thinking about how close he had come to losing Lauren’s trust completely.
