Chapter 9 - The Courtroom Reckoning

The case attracted national attention.

News organizations called it an unprecedented reproductive-fraud dispute. Northstar Reproductive Center suspended three employees and announced an independent investigation.

Several other former patients came forward with concerns about altered consent records.

Melinda was charged with identity theft, medical-record fraud, unlawful transfer of reproductive material, forgery, and child endangerment.

The nurse who accepted the bribe agreed to testify.

Northstar settled Kirsten’s civil claims and lost its operating license after investigators discovered broader failures.

Connor was not criminally charged with arranging the theft because prosecutors could not prove he understood the full plan.

He was, however, held civilly responsible for signing documents he knew involved Kirsten’s embryo while deliberately avoiding verification.

His company removed him from its executive board.

The publicity campaign that had brought him to the hospital became the photograph attached to every article about the scandal.

At the custody hearing, Melinda’s attorney argued that she had carried Lucas, given birth to him, and cared for him for a year.

Kirsten did not deny those facts.

When called to testify, she spoke carefully.

“I do not want Lucas punished for the actions of adults,” she said. “He deserves stability, medical care, honesty, and relationships with people who genuinely love him.”

Melinda watched from the other side of the courtroom.

The judge asked, “Are you requesting that Ms. Price be immediately and permanently removed from his life?”

Kirsten looked at Lucas’s developmental specialist.

“No. I am requesting sole legal custody and a professionally supervised transition. Future contact should depend on Lucas’s well-being, Ms. Price’s accountability, and the recommendations of his therapists.”

Connor stared at her.

He had expected revenge.

Kirsten wanted justice, but she refused to build it out of another trauma for Lucas.

The judge recognized Kirsten as Lucas’s legal and biological mother, finding that her genetic material had been used without authorization.

Melinda’s parental status was terminated because the pregnancy had resulted from fraud and because she had endangered Lucas by delaying medical care.

She was initially permitted supervised contact during the transition, but those visits stopped after she repeatedly told Lucas that Kirsten was trying to steal him.

Months later, Melinda pleaded guilty.

She received a prison sentence and was permanently prohibited from working in healthcare or accessing confidential medical records.

Connor requested parental rights.

The judge denied the request.

He was not Lucas’s biological or legal father, and evidence showed he had participated in the fraudulent transfer without ensuring Kirsten’s consent.

However, because Lucas had formed an attachment to him, the court allowed limited supervised contact based solely on recommendations from the child’s therapists.

Connor hated the restriction.

For once, his feelings were not the most important consideration.

After the hearing, he approached Kirsten outside the courthouse.

Rain darkened the shoulders of his coat.

“You won,” he said.

Kirsten adjusted Lucas’s blanket.

“This was never a competition.”

“It feels like one.”

“That is why you lost.”

Connor looked at the sleeping child.

“Will he know I loved him?”

“That depends on what you do next.”

“You’ll tell him the truth?”

“When he is old enough to understand it.”

“What will you say about me?”

“The truth.”

Connor looked afraid.

Kirsten continued.

“I will tell him you cared for him during his first year. I will also tell him you ignored things you should have questioned. I will not teach him to hate you, but I will not lie to protect you.”

Connor nodded slowly.

“I’m sorry.”

A year earlier, those words might have mattered.

Now they were only the beginning of a responsibility he would have to carry alone.

Kirsten walked down the courthouse steps without looking back.

Harold waited beside the car.

He opened the door for her and smiled at Lucas.

“Ready to go home?”

Kirsten looked at her son.

May you like

“Yes,” she said. “We are.”
